  • @servadac42

    @servadac42

    Yes, they should've discussed that. Heinlein really believed in militarism and discipline as something good, the scriptwriter Ed Nuemeier and Paul Verhoeven satirized that brilliantly in the film. There was talks about a remake with the power armors, probably for the best that it doesn't seem to be getting realized.

    @shadowdragoon6 There are an amazing amount of differences between the book and the movie. The book takes great pains to point out the bugs aren't stupid at all and actually build ships and laser weaponry. Also the removal of the Skinnies from the movie was interesting but I can understand it.

    The novel also doesn't have all the fascist stuff in it. The film is a fine movie in its own right, but it was so sad to watch it as a fan of the book and see that they had decided to distort Heinlein's story the way they did. If they wanted an anti-fascist movie, why not make a story of their own for that?

    Watch the roughneck Chronicles if liked the movie and book its a great blend of the 2 just as a kids show so no boobs or dismemberment but plenty of bug juice, great action, and a good story. Only real problems are due to business things it ended in a cliffhanger and the CGI is kinda dated as it was made in 1999 with ups and downs depending upon the business in the background.

    Well that isn't that surprising. The Japanese actually consider right wing views in a lot of their anime's. You just wont get anything near that out of any post 60's Western Film because of who runs Hollywood. Starship Troopers movie was actually meant to parody the book. It kind of worked as the film is funny but also kind of backfired since a lot of people really root for the Troopers despite how over the top they are.

    I saw this in theaters with my best friend nick and his dad, when I was 11...opening night...packed theatre so we had to sit front row. What a badass experience lol. Later I bought this movie on vhs when it came out and watched a lot over that following summer. My favorite movie too due to all the undertones and soace between the lines content. It's crazy how multi layered in depth this flick is. Then I found out it was based on the book...so I got that and the opening sequence of attacks is amazing. The only thing they didnt do in the movie was the jump jet and actual armored suits. They need to remake this movie, and with today's CGI...would be amazing to see the book into a movie, but staying true to the book. Would need to be done by a reputable outfit and have a good budget. Remake!

    They made a game book for Starship Troopers as well; half Choose Your Own Adventure and half RPG Lone Wolf type book with two separate battles as I recall. Interesting book. I initially was going to return it, since I had wanted the book itself, thinking it was it, due to Starship Troopers has had many covers over the years. But kept it for it's uniqueness. I believe the name is Starship Troopers Shines the Name.

  • @mechredd

    Paul Verhoven never read the book. He's very anti fascist and thought the book was pro fascism, so he decided to make a parody of it. The government is actually an elected republic much like the current United States, but there is a distinction between citizens and civilians, and only citizens can vote. There are many ways to gain citizenship, all involving civil service and positive contributions to society, but military service is the easiest and most common. Many people think that the book is fascist when it actually isn't. It's supposed to be about self sacrifice and selfless actions made to support your friends and family, and by extension, society as a whole. Also, the book goes into detail about the bugs, their allies, and how they attacked Earth. They actually have colonies in our solar system and large carrier bugs that act as starships.

    Yeah, Verhoven, being a hopeless commie, tried again to make a stab at US perceived fascism. Just like before, in Robocop, he tried to criticize rampant capitalism. But his attacks missed the point, weren't understood by the audience interested in that kind of movie. And the movies still turned out to be great. And yeah, he distorted the original a lot. In the original, troopers were fighting using nuclear-powered mecha suits against enemy that presented an existential treat to the humanity, earning the right to vote along the way.
