It's the Year 2000 (+20) on this episode of Rental Reviews. James, Kieran, and Justin jump back 20 years to when Y2K was an actual computer bug that many people were worried about. Well, worried enough to spend millions fixing the problem and selling VHS tapes to scare people at home. Think of the 2012 end of the world scare, but way worse. People were even doing prepper type stuff by collecting food, water, and the basic essentials when the world shut down.

    Most of Y2K was (Edit: averted / _mostly)_ a joke but, there were _SERIOUS_ concerns about Russia's antiquated Deadhand / Perimeter automatic nuclear retaliation system being patched, as it required human input at regular, time stamped intervals to NOT launch the nukes. Yes, Russia actually has (had?) their entire arsenal hooked up to an egg timer with no human input. Even worse, it was programmed with _really_ obscure, old programming languages with few practitioners and partially was also hardcoded. The CIA took it super seriously at the time. Now, we only need to wory about the Unix date issue launching all of _our_ Nukes! Also, I love your guy's content!

    I was studying comp sci in 98 and 99 - there was a huge demand for coders to update old programs. While there was definitely a lot of bullshit, it's worth noting that a lot of problems have been averted by doing a LOT of debugging beforehand. There would definitely have been a significant economic impact if the issue hadn't been adressed. It's kind of ironic: part of the reason this was perceived as 100% nonsense is that we actually anticipated and fixed the problem :-)

    On the rainwater thing: Really only a couple of states have laws against it and it's due to a really flawed understanding of the hydrological cycle. I'm sure he read one article somewhere, or stumbled upon a certain state or city that has hard rules and took that as broad application. I think Colorado has rules for rainwater, but they were like made in the 1800s, so not an industrial conspiracy. The lizard men didn't even arrive in the central US till 1926.

    every group of friends has that one conspiracy theory guy who reminds people of things like the rainwater collection and the outlawing of raw milk and stuff. I think the closest thing i’ve ever heard to what he’s saying about small at-home gardens is that neighborhood associations very often will not allow you to have gardens and will restrict people to only having grass.

    The Y2K+38 bug is unixtime epoch time roll over. a common way of keeping time on unix machines was/is storing the number of seconds since jan 1 1970 at midnight which would be 0. an signed 32 bit integer stores this value so it can keep 2^31-1 seconds - it's 31 not 32 because it's a signed value - and after that it rolls back to 1970. imagine the horror of the computers thinking disco sounds good and bell bottoms are fashionable.

  • @GlueC

    @GlueC

    But as a signed number, it would overflow to negative 2^31, so the computer would think we're almost into 1902. Most modern platforms have addressed it already, though. Only ancient OSes/software like government systems likely still use unsigned 32 though.... uh-oh.

    James was totally right about the year 2038 bug by the way - James if you ever read this - you can think of a bit as a box that can represent 1 or 0, and each subsequent bit doubles its value - the year 2038 bug is due to the fact that the number of boxes holding the numbers will overflow, and would need a 1 in the next box that doesnt exist, resetting all the values to 0 (causing all sorts of confusion about when it is)

    The rainwater laws are mostly for public health. Lots of bugs and disease and stuff can spawn in stagnant water, and you don't want to encourage people drinking water that might not have been cleaned/purified correctly.

    Y2K was actually a real problem, they just fixed it before it could happen. There were a shit ton of programmers working on that stuff, converting old code to work with more that two year digits. It was never as big of a problem as these tapes made it out to be, but a real problem nonetheless.

    That dude who faced off with the feds had nothing to do with rain water. It had to do with the feds stopping the use of federal lands for grazing, also he refused to pay taxes on the use of that land but his family had been using it for over a 100 years.

Just after midnight I had to test the light switches, flush the toilets and run the faucets and radio into the office advising if everything was ok. Our whole staff did this...it was fun listening to everyone radio in. 20 years ago, fuk I'm old.

    Funny thing, At 11:59, about 10 seconds before New Years 2000, my cousins and I ran outside to see if it will htf. We hear the family shout happy New Years, at that very moment a single bolt of lightning strikes above our block, in a clear sky, and I just about shat my pants. All my cousins and I laughed so hard wondering wtf happened. Looking back now, it's kinda still puzzling ...

    I remember being so fucking afraid when the year 2000 hit, I think I was fourteen at the time. I watched Y2K documentaries and the news would cover it, but then it came and went with zero issues. It did teach me not to buy into mass hysteria from the stupid news cycle at the very least.
