This is a break down of the Centaur Type Vessel. A ship that .. doesn't have a ton of information on it. But we wont let that stop us! Let me know your thoughts!

Actually Trekyards I think it was who had their own little theory that the NX-01-style deflector at the front of the saucer kept being used on later ships as well, especially ones that had no dedicated engineering hull with a deflector, except that it was covered up by a fairing and was only useful for maintaining warp flight. Whether ships with engineering hulls (like the Constitution or Excelsior) still have this auxiliary deflector in the saucer though I dont know, but the fact that on the Intrepid class such a auxiliary deflector can be clearly seen on the upper tip of the primary hull is definitely a big argument in favor of that (on VOY its called a navigational deflector usually iirc)

Really okay please explain to me where the deflector dish is located on non federation vessels? To paraphrase Teal'c when traveling at ftl why have windows as such speeds when you have shields. The deflector is more used as a science instrument then anything else and was likely no longer needed after shields were developed. After all none of the Federations enemies use them.

I like to think of the Centaur-class as an attempt at a Miranda-class successor ship, in line with how the Excelsior-class all but replaced the Constitution refits. Unlike how the Miranda was heavily modified from being just a Constitution-refit saucer with a pair of warp nacelles, the Centaur-class by design attempted to take advantage of the benefits of having a small profile while putting all of the starship "necessities" secondary, and attempted to condense all of the expected ship facilities into the saucer. In my head, the reason that the ship design wasn't commonly seen was because ultimately a later design by the name of the Nebula-class would not only succeed the idea of a serious Miranda-class successor, but it would do everything that the Centaur-class initially set out to do.

  • @jhmcd2

Most likely I would see a Constellation class ship coming out between this ship and the Nebula, with the Centaur type being built as an early attempt to replace the Miranda, but the Constellation being the ship that ultimately won the contract, only for both to be outclassed by the original Miranda.

I tend to think of the Centaur the way I think of the Nebula class. They had spare parts, but didn't have enough time or resources to build a full Excelsior/Galaxy ship, so they build a heavy frigate/light cruiser meant for patrol duties. As it turned out, this ship ends up in a frustrating middle position. It's more powerful than the Miranda class, but lacks the modular section the Nebula does. The result is an adequate pre-Wolf 359 patrol ship, but not much more to talk about.

@Mike DeMarco that’s interesting, I always thought of the Luna class as being an offshoot of the Akira. Probably because of the shape of the secondary hull, larger deflector, and rectangular nacelles. But there’s definitely Sovereign-class styling elements to it, while Akira looks more apiece with a Galaxy.

  • @chrissonofpear1384

@Mike DeMarco More or less, yes. Cannot be fully sure of the Ambassador, except it had a long development time. Some trials may have begun by 2318. And trying to sort registries to year of launch can also be a bit variable. I see it as averaging anywhere from 300 to 1100 ships commissioned per year, depending on era. Average maybe around 718.

You know, there are a number of Federation designs that I do like and find genuinely interesting, but at the same time, wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense to just stick with a handful of tried-and-true designs and continue building upon and modifying those ships to reach their full potential rather than constantly spewing out new ships that really don't seem to accomplish very much on their own?

I always liked the centaur too. It looks sleek yet simple, and logical and functional, unlike many modern designs (especially in games) with all the useless curves and detailing. And the elongated nacelles work fine in this design, just like in the excelsior which is also one of my all time favorites. Hate discovery though, that ship has no elegance to it with the hard triangle shape in the rear, the weird and never seen before holes in the dish that make no sense at all, and so on. Just because you like elongated nacelles doesn't mean they alyways work. As always with design it is how everything fits together and works together to form a good looking whole. For me it fits and works in the centaur and the excelsior, but it doesn't in the discovery.

Boisegang Haha, you know, there might be a theory behind this... Okay, try this headcanon on for size: Starfleet shipbuilding is 24th-century pork-barrel spending shacking up with crooked contractors. "Oh, man, well, I know you just wanted us to upgrade the warp nacelles and refit the forward phaser banks, but just _look_ at the state of this warp core! We're gonna have to rip out the whole thing, and all the new ones coming out of Utopia Planitia use completely different fittings. That means we need to remodel half the Engineering section. Getting the main computer to deal with the new warp core's quantum stabilizer field, well, it's just simpler to replace that than try to upgrade the old one. And don't get me started on these old phasers...! No, this is gonna be a much bigger job than we originally quoted you for..." And the politicians who approve these "refits"? Well, any politicians with lots of Starfleet Academy graduates in their constituency would absolutely _throw_ _themselves_ at that kind of project. Landing a bunch of endless "refitting" contracts will mean jobs and resources flowing into their constituency, and influence and prestige flowing the politician's way. Even in a money-less society, there's no politician who will resist that for long. So, politicians get reelected, a bunch of Starfleet Academy STEM grads are kept off the street (because let's face it, if they weren't busy working for Starfleet, they'd be merrily building doomsday weapons instead), and hey, they occasionally even fix a given ship's problems.

Historically it has been claimed that when a Navy could not approval for the funds for a new ship, they would do a 'grand refit' which would actually be cover for scrapping the old ship and building a new vessel ( slowly to hide the expense ). But this does not conflict with your theory.

If you want to see a "Frankenstein" of a ship, in STO the Centaur class is considered the equivalent of the Miranda class - along with a third type that I don't remember at the moment. When you finish the tutorial, another mini-tutorial you have to hunt down - but is optional - is going to the ship customizer. When you go to him, you can select to customize your ship. And not just what material it's made of, or what the colors & color scheme are, but what parts it's actually made of. And, when you're doing it with the Miranda class that's your original ship, you can select parts from ANY of the three that fall under the same umbrella of "Light (Lt.) Cruiser." In other words, you can make up a ship of your own design, using different parts from the three different ships. (And, if you pay the ZEN to acquire it, you can even now add Discovery's Reliant class to that, as well.) (Incidentally, Lt. Cruisers are one of the few cruiser variants - along with Battlecruisers & Dreadnought Cruisers like the Enterprise-D refit from "All Good Things...Part 2" - that can be fitted with dual cannons in the game.)

If your measurement of 381 m long is correct, it could NOT be a variant of the Excelsior-class, as their saucer was 467 m in diameter (greater than the Centaur-class saucer + warp naceles). If they actually made an Excelsior variant with a 467 m diameter saucer + these rather long warp naceles (as shown at 0:27), then I think that would be really cool, and would be more of a light cruiser than a destroyer.

I always had the impression that the Centaur would be a bit more powerful than the Miranda given that the parts used were based on the Excelsior - a ship we know could be refit to even stand up to the Defiant. In my mind this ship would have been a sort of patrol ship/destroyer. Short ranged but effective against bug ships due to the speed, maneuverability and what I assume would be superior firepower to other ships in her size bracket. Maybe it really was a response to all the Miranda’s exploding and would have seen more widespread use of the war was prolonged

It looks like a ship built for small crews and cover large areas with enough firepower to deal with trouble-makers and tools to help stranded ships, but not for exploration or particularly rough areas - instead to have enough speed to escape trouble and get reinforcements. Which puts it in a different category to the Miranda, which essentially was a cheaper version of the constitution.. which keeps making me ask why bother refitting the constitution when the Miranda was at least as capable?

  • @ralfhtg1056

Concerning the size: if we say the saucer is the same like it is used for the Excelsior, the weapons-pod would be huge, firing torpedos with the size of a small bus. The original model utilizes the bridge module of the Constitution class, so it is more likely that the ship is not 381 m long, but rather 210 m as it was meant to be by its designer Adam Buckner. Additionally the "nacelle-struts" are actually the pylons of the Mirandas weapons pod.

  • @jasoncaldwell8199
    @jasoncaldwell81995 жыл бұрын

Either it's a tiny ship- if you scale the kit Ash on the Miranda bridge, and torpedo pod OR it's a medium sized ship, if you scale from the Excelsior saucer. The nacelles we're made from halves of AMT Excelsior outer parts, so they're skinnier than a normal Excelsior nacelle, so those parts are not useful for scaling. Breaking down the window placement is odd too- the smaller scale means the windows are huge skylights and the Excelsior saucer size means the windows cover more than one deck. It's really a "head-cannon" ship, in that it's whichever you prefer, but I think it's probably the larger size, just because it's mission role would be greater with more power/crew/weapons.

The ridge that runs along the length of the bottom of the torpedo bay is where the deflector dish is. When the u.s.s. Centaur was commissioned it was designed to use parts from the excelsior class and some decommissioned ships, Later as the ship type had proven itself to be a very durable, maneuverable, fast and hard hitting design it was reclassified the Centaur class. There are multiple versions of it including a destroyers, science vessels, passenger liner(personal transport) for at least one admiral, the Centaur class is best used in packs, it's not uncommon to find the Centaur class in groups of 3 or more ships patrolling federation territories.

I like that there is some sort of duality in ship designs... The Constitution (Refit) and the Miranda. (I wonder if the Reliant seen in ST2 was a Miranda Refit) The Excelsior and the Centaur. The Galaxy and the Nebula. One is the full design and the other is a smaller equivalent - possibly weaker but faster/easier to produce. Makes me wonder what the Ambassador class and Sovereign class version of these twin-designs look like if they exist.

@Andrew Thomson The Akira lacks the similarities with the Sovereign. If you look up the other pairs you'll see the similarities between the "twins". Constitution and Miranda have the same saucer, nacelles and torpedo launcher. Galaxy and Nebula are essentially the same but assembled differently. Personally I think the "cheap Sovereign-twin" would look alot like the Centaur, just with Sovereign parts.

Makes sense. Stick a secondary hull onto any old saucer and send em back out fighting. You can stick another saucer on that engineering section once you fix it. They’re all modular, detachable, and interchangeable anyway. Saucer, bridge, nacelles, secondary hull. So they should use standard fittings across the board already. So might as well piece together the working parts that came back from the front as quick as you can before working on the more seriously damaged stuff.

The designer, Adam Buckner, and the Eaglemoss scaling confirm a length of 210 meters. Big enough to handle one or maybe two attack ships on even footing, but not three. Starfleet probably hastily put together working components within the specifications of light patrol combatant or light perimeter action ship, and put enough frames and crews together to hold the line while the larger ships are being overtaken. Defiants and Sabers were not being produced fast enough and Ju'Day raiders probably had trouble in 1 on 1 engagements against Hidecki.

All ships have deflectors, they are just not as big and sophisticated as large exploration ships. The ships with small deflectors like the Miranda are meant to be used in known space. With only small particle debris in their way, mostly in shipping lanes as escorts, and as patrol ships in federation systems. The defiant class has a large deflector probably because it was meant to go into enemy territory, usually unknown space. It is most likely used to repel debris from their victims as it is used it tight attacks.

Am I correct in thinking the DS9 episode where this ship features is the one where the crew steals a Jem'Hadar fighter that has been fitted with a Breen energy dampening weapon? They are trying to get the example back to Starfleet when they are attacked unwittingly by a friendly Centaur class ship and forced to disable it in order to continue their mission.

  • @christopherwills6976

To me in my head cannon the Centaur class was made as a result of the dominion war. The federation was desperate they were loosing ground, resources and loosing ships faster than they could replace them or the crews. This ship was to be mass produced, using spare parts of the work horses of the fleet the Excelsior and Miranda classes. It was a small ship that could "dogfight" the bug ship and reduce losses. Yes intrepid or galaxy class ships would last longer but they had large crews and more resources, and the federation needed to patch the losses it had taken, this ship could take up defensive and patrol positions to free up the cruisers and heavy ships for major fleet actions, basically thrown together as a stop gap during the bad months of the War.

As the excelsior was what supplanted the constitution, the Centaur is what was supposed to supplant the Miranda, and both were supplanted by the Nebula if you want to go by the belief that all similarly configured ships supplant each other sucessively in a manner to how the connie was replaced by excelsior by the ambassador by the galaxy and so on. To follow that same lineage, and going back to game canon just for the sake of having a complete family tree of sorts, you have the poisidon(NX era version of a miranda) was replaced by the miranda, was replaced by the centaur, was replaced by some variant of the ambassador and going into modded game canon is a bit much, which was replaced by the Nebula which was in turn replaced, supposedly, by what resembled a Nebula if the nebula had been designed after the proliferation of the sovereign. Its basically a practice among federation engineers that once the mainline cruiser of a generation of ships, ex galaxy or excelsior, that the design would be scaled down into a plethora of other variants. These variants would supplant similar looking vessels from the previous generation.

you have nebula class that are basicly 2 types one based off ambasador class saucer then later on made to link up with the same separation points of a galaxy class saucer so id agree centaur is a saucer of excelsior class and not even the refited saucer as it may really be recycled parts from mothball refited to a compact modernized secondary haul for times of war then later on in the dominion war. its been stated even on ds9 border disputed have been perpetuated by outfiting mothballed hardware with working modern hardware then sisko even states doing the same thing to supliment crippled shipyards. so thats my best idea i can come up with for this one.

Navigational Deflectors are not really needed at warp. Mostly they are needed on Exploration ship traveling into unknown area or in systems with an abundance of small materials like asteroids. If a Ship like the Centaur which is doing the duties of a Destroyer, escort duties Patrolling the borders and the likes. Has no need of a large Navigational Deflector. Smaller auxiliary deflectors in the saucer sections are more than enough.

Other than that I wished they kitbashed this sucker way before using all those poor Miranda classes as Cannon fodder. the Excelsior kitbashes, this one I truly like considering (as you pointed out), if Excelsior replaced the Constitution, this class would surely surplant the Miranda easily, but of course the Paramount production would NEVER allow that.
