Starlink - Polar region review

We review the newly-launched Starlink setup in Norther Sweden!
We moved from South Africa to a farm in Northern Sweden! We love DIY, the outdoors, good food, family and friends. Come along on this journey with us!

Wow, I'm really surprised your 8m pole didn't fix your obstruction issue! I've had my Starlink system almost 2 years now and have been carefully tracking the stats over time. You might be interested in watching my monthly updates.

I think we were only linking to the few sats in polar orbit...may certainly be better now. I see dishy is much more flat/80 degrees facing now.

i am testing here in finland right now, and its pretty much the same story. but my router can failover to LTE when starlink gets interrupted... it works smoothish. But i dont get much speed out of it.

I know that this video is a bit old but i still have a question. Thirty years ago in northen sweden we had all our tv-chanels from satelites. When those antennas where mounted we always had to mount them under the overhanging roof to avoid problems with the snow. I wonder if it is posible to do something similar with a starlink antenna ? I have not tried starlink myself but is thinking about it. Best regards.

There are a lot of people in the RV and boating communities that take the conventional Starlink antenna and "flat-mount" it. That takes some destructive surgery but results in more stable reception at a lower data throughput. It appears that it is too lat for you to try this but maybe others will. Before hacking into the dish you would try to see if it works at your location by suspending the dish by its edges so that it is flat and letting the pole move (uselessly) below it. After some time the dish will realize that the motor commands don't affect dish orientation and it will give up trying to move the dish. At that time the dish tries to make do by pointing the phased array antenna only. That might or might not give you better results. If it does then there are various ways to mount the dish flat permanently and to disable the motor.

@@DeyselFarm No, that won't work due to orbital mechanics. Those RV communities roam around in moderate latitudes, like 30-45 degrees, and the vast majority of the starlink satellites are in a 53 degree inclination orbit. That means that when you are at a latitude below 45 degrees you see a lot of satellites passing overhead. But when you are further north than 53 degrees, none of these satellites ever pass overhead! All 53 degree inclination satellites pass in an arc over the southern horizon, from west to east. The further north you are, the lower the arc. That is why the trees towards the south are a problem. There are also some satellites in a higher inclination orbit (over the poles) and you do see those going overhead in Sweden, but there are far fewer of those, not enough for continuous coverage. It explains why you sometimes have good speed but not always. The motor is there for a reason: it points the dish in such a direction that it covers the area where the satellites pass. The phased array pointing cannot achieve a full 180 degrees coverage, so it has to be helped by rough pointing in the correct direction. In an RV that resides at 30 north, facing up is a good direction. But in Sweden it is not.

Great review! Sad to hear that it did' nt live up to expectations. We are looking for a house in the northern Sweden right now above Haparanda. But since internet is really important for me and my work i need to try to find a solid solution and i was hoping StarLink would work up there. The place we have been looking at is in the middle of the forest so hoping for fiber i think is being to positive. How is the 4G working up there?

Been re-testing starlink again. Works so much better now. Will put a video out on it soon. 4G is not bad at all. Also, chances are that your village may have fibre

The problem in the middle of Sweden around 62.5degrees N is that it's too far north for the low-inclination shells but too far south for the 71deg shells. The satellites are bunching up at the latitude of the orbital inclination , so you need very free line of sight at low elevations to the north. Once the polar shells are launched, this will be fixed, but right now the conditions at these latitudes are very much not ideal.

I have a cottage at 62. Latitude north. Do you know if shells have been launched. Need to wait as I have a tree problem. Dish really needs to point straight up. Also why does starlink sellers not sell roaming so I can pause monthly fee?

@@kubibear2890 Not sure about the state of the shells, but regardless you'll have trouble if the antenna can only see up. Basic geometry says that only a minority of passes will be overhead.

Me and my girlfriend are both moving to northern Sweden, to a place where there is no possibility of fiber. We've also been considering Starlink, we need it for work, so quite sad to hear it's not as great as advertised. Quick question/comment - on Starlink's web page they recommend the high performance kit when entering our new address - is that what you used as well? A bit pricey, but they seem to have a heavy discount at the moment. Perhaps that would improve on things, could be worth trying.

In most cases you can get away with 4g. We use a directional antenna with Telia. Also consider radio lan such as micronat.se. To be fair, we tested starlink in very early stages and coverage could be much better now.
