Thanks for doing this review Randy. I haven't missed an episode in months, and was stoked to see you did this one a while ago. This looks like the best price to performance sub for anyone living in Canada since we pay a little more for SVS it seems... I heard Starke Sound also makes some well built and budget friendly speakers. I would love to see something from the Brev series featured on your channel one day 🙏

For years I listened to my bookshelf speakers while the sub I had just sat there between the speakers dis-connected. The sub was being used as a stand for my amplifier. For years I rationalized that my bookshelf speakers had deep enough bass, the croosover in the sub might lessen the sound quality etc. Was I ever cheating myself. I moved the amp off the sub & onto something else and hooked the subwoofer up. If there was any degradation in the midrange and highs going through extra circuitry (the subs crossover), I didn't hear it. Deep bass that was barely audible was full and generous with much better dynamics. There are sound stage cues way down there and they asserted themselves. On classical music, the symphony halls sounded bigger & you could hear their acoustics better. They say that even though bass is non directional below a certain frequency, that using 2 subwoofers will break up standing waves better and improves the bass even further. Cross firing bass waves from 2 subs do wonderful things in any room acoustic. Celestion, years ago made a dipole subwoofer with sound radiation out both the front and back from opposite facing woofers. Excellent but I think it was only sold as part of the Celestion 6000 system. You can talk yourself into thinking the visceral element of the music is not that important, like I did for a while. Try a sub...or two. Here are several tracks that are good to use for evaluating subwoofer definition. Time Loves A Hero-Little Feat from the live album Waiting For Columbus. The song with the lyric "How Can I Live Without You," by Journey. I think that might be what the track title is. Available on their greatest hits LP. Their lp's have somewhat better sound than their cd's. Randy, the colored guy with glasses who used to be a judge on American Idol for years, was the bass player for Journey; a lot of people don't know that. The Bruiser-Tim Weisberg from Weisberg 4 and Greatest Hits. This track made me aware of how amazing his bass player was. Bass is not usually what his music is about. A great track to showcase bass definition and quick bass playing going up and down the scales.

My low frequency battle continues for over a year now. I installed an Emotiva SE8 Flex sub in my budget 5.1.2 surround system and getting the timing and level set has been a chore. I'm still not sure that have it correct, but it is very close since I cannot pick out the sub from the other speakers now. I just have BOOM when called for. The SE8 comes as a down firing driver with front mounted passive radiator, but after several months I decided to swap those positions. I'm so glad that I did. (Note: the speaker wire connectors have locking tabs on them that must be carefully unlocked to remove) Now my couch rattles with most of the bass tones. If I ever have the money I may add a second SE8 to my system.

I have a couple 10" subs. A Realistic plate amp with a JBL driver and a Boston Accustics. The Boston can turn low pass off so it is perfect with the Klipsch RP-41s which sense the sub and controls the sub crossover. My towers don't really need a sub though I can hear/feel the difference with movies. If or when I have the budget, I think I will look at the Rythmic servo sub.

I don't think they distribute in the US but for Brits I would shout out BK Electronics for really well built, great value traditional subs. Very similar to the Starke offering. No bells and whistles but very flexible and great audio engineering. Sold direct so no dealer premium. Great customer support. I have four in the house right now, from compact to massive. They used to make amps (and maybe whole subs, not sure) for REL. All amps class A/B which I, personally, prefer.

I love my L12 as well. My Uni-fi UF5 towers barely keep up with it. Such a fast tight sub. It's definitely made for music, but I've been happy with it for movies as well. My in room measurements have it hitting down to a solid 16HZ. For the price it was a killer deal.

  • @chadlejeune9834

@@JC-lk3oy Same! I have the UB52s and it's bass easily outperforms the speakers. This week I had the chance to try out the LS50 Meta in my system and I was floored at how good the bass integration was, it sounded enveloping but super tight. With my UB52 setup I thought that the bass was a bit bloated or slow and a bit uneven but now I realize it was the speakers fault and not the sub lol. I have the Uni-fi reference bookshelf coming in and I hope that integrates with the L12 better than the UB52.

I'm a Scot but it's great to see so many home grown US companies entering the market, especially at the more affordable end. Wish more of them would distribute on this side of the pond or sell via efficient international online companies like the Chinese do. Would be great to have easy access to, for example, Schitt, Walsh, Tekton or Zu here. You can get Schitt but supplies seem variable and prices are relatively high.

This sub is forever on sale so it's a ~$400 unit not $700. Can't imagine it at >$1000 at a retailer. Maybe that's where they figure $700 is a reasonable MSRP?

Sealed designs aren't 'faster' if the bass reflex design is properly implemented and set up in the room. REL mostly uses bass reflex designs and many audiophiles tout them as very 'fast' if not the best.

@@audioaficionado9494 REL vs SVS, who cares? And who cares how heavy a speaker is when the cone weighs about as much as heavy paper does? REL also brags that they don't use ported subwoofers so your generalization that ported is just as good falls apart again. Monster JL subwoofers and other monster subwoofers are also sealed, I wonder why? Hmm, could be they sound better?
