Star Yamaha Nearly Made A BIG MISTAKE...

Haiden Deegan had one of the most incredible rookie seasons in memory, culminating in the inaugural SMX Playoff Champion just a few weeks again at the iconic LA Coliseum. We managed to organise a quick sit down with Haiden and Brian Deegan in the aftermath of the historic win in the original Mulisha Compound in Temecula's wine country.

    people are so judgmental of haiden saying he’s this saying he’s that, everybody saying he’s so entitled when he still has to buss his butt just to be on the same level as everybody else. sure he’s definitely had more connections and opportunities just because of who his father is but regardless he still needs to put the work in and practice like every other rider.

    I know right, I understand. When you are at the top and your life is so public on the internet so he has a lot of fans at the races. People are gonna see that and hate on him, idk if a jealousy thing or what. I will say yes, obviously haiden had it easier in some areas than others, financially(bikes, equipment, help) and yeah I'm sure connections as well. That's only half the battle though, even with all that, no factory team would sign him if he lacked the talent and especially a top tier team like Star.. yeah they definitely wouldn't have signed him if he didn't have the talent. Haiden has earned that spot with star, and I'm sure star is very happy to have him on the team

    The fact Haiden is that self aware, and not getting carried away,shows maturity that many guys his age and older do not have. Can't fault the kid. I was a little skeptical when he first turned pro,I knew he was good but I expected a big crash or two in his first year. It's pretty standard for any fast amateur to make some pretty big mistakes in the first year. They tend to get frustrated that they aren't winning,or they get carried away and push it too far,but we never really saw that with Haiden. He WILL be the next big deal for years to come I think. He's already rattled a few cages!

I think that's even more impressive. Look at his brother Hudson. Not trying to knock the kid, but Haiden could have easily been like that. I've followed the Deegan's for years, use to watch Brian back in the freestyle days so you could say I've been a fan for a long time haha. I gotta say, watching haiden grow up and just dominate was awesome, yes boring at times because the kid was just that far above the pack. Brian, was really smart to film everything and I'm glad they decided to start up loading back in the day. You don't often get that much of an athletes life, with haiden we've been able to watch him progress from basically day one. So being someone that watched him and saw how hard he worked you could respect it. The kid could have done anything, but chose motorcross, that ain't easy. I find it funny how people hate on him, they use to say he's only good because of his dad's checkbook, he has the best equipment because of his dad(as he should, his parents have the money, I would do the same for my kid, set them up to win, make sure he has everything he needs to win, the rest is on him), then they said only reason he's on star is because of the checkbook, then they said he'd never qualify top 10, he did, then he won't ever get top 10 finish, he did and so on and so on. Yes Brian set him up with the best equipment and help but haiden had to do the work and he certainly did. Hats off to Haiden, pretty awesome to watch his journey and love the hard work. Anyways I'm done ranting hahaha

    Question on the "futures" and what Brian said about the kid not turning pro. He said that he didn't want the kid racing A1 and turning pro. Was the kid racing 250 Intermediate at that time? I remember when Larry Brooks was making the move from 80s to 125s. There was a short window where he couldn't get an AMA Pro license since he wasn't 16 yet. For a short bit and me as a bottom third of the pack 125 Int I was surprised we were handlebar to handlebar.... at the starting gate at Saddleback (he was also about 5 spots down.) The only other time we were in close proximity was during that moto. I couldn't believe how quickly he lapped me and how fast he was going. To me, it's a bit of sandbagging if Danger Boy was racing 250 Int, and then a few months later battling for wins at the pinnacle of the 250 class.

    @joeschmidt6597

    Edit: *prior to the 250 main Futures is for amateurs close to turning pro and are raced by mostly A riders, but some B riders to experience exactly what its like to race on a pro level SX track at a handful of rounds during the season and do a 20 minute main -during- prior to the 250 Main Event. Haiden was racing 250 Pro Sport (250A) and Open Pro Sport (450A) at amatuer nationals. The AMA allows riders to earn their SX points at select amateur national events during the year (LL, Mini Os, etc.) towards being qualified to apply for an AMA pro Supercross license. Amatuers werent coming in prepared to race a full SX season. Amateurs race on outdoor tracks their entire amateur career mostly, but there's amatuer days during the outdoor season either a few days before or after the pro round on Saturday so the track is what the pros raced/will race on and amatuers are much better prepared and do alot better in outdoors. Facilities have SX practice tracks now, but the local tracks dont. There used to be a lot more super gnarly crashes during SX by rookies. Still happens but they are much better prepared and know what to expect these days with programs like Futures and the Moto Combines for outdoors.

    God forbid he gets some good down to Earth councilling. His time will come he is showing all the signs, like Marty Smith did but going berserk trying to win and you become another Bubba, too much too soon and an career curve that tracks straight up then straight down. Had Magoo had this kind of support , even Pastrana, who knows what they might have done?

    An yall bullied Brennan when he claimed haiden bike. Rules are rules. An the claim rule is ment to keep things fair for the amateur racers. But yall were pissed an bullied the kid an got out of the claim even though thats unfair an not right, rules are rules. That means pros an famous ppl have to follow the same rules. But since yall are the deegans then that means rules don't apply to yall.
