    I feel like the overall feeling of the prequels would’ve been better if Lucas had started with Attack of the Clones as episode 1, then make the Clone Wars a live action episode 2, where we could’ve seen a bigger galaxy than we expected, and then keep episode 3 more or less the same.

  • @linkaran512

    @linkaran512

    Yes, I have been saying this. Though I believe the that alternate episode 2 would end with Anakin being completely disillusioned with the Jedi and Republic and joining Sidious in secret and the alternate episode 3 him working towards sabotaging the Jedi's efforts, but showing more of conflict towards his loyalties to Sidious and Obi-wan. Ultimately Anakin of course betraying the galaxy and becoming the Vader we know against his duel with Obi-wan.

    I agree, now that I am an adult and more aware of how storytelling works and what makes a good story I see that Attack of The Clones and the other prequel movies are bad movies that failed to meet the amazing potential of their themes and awesome characters from the original trilogy. However when I was a kid watching it with my cousins on a Sunday afternoon at my grandmothers house it was the most epic and incredible thing i’ve ever seen on screen. The lightsaber duels in that battle are amazing, and the Battle of Geonosis is one of my favorite battles in Star Wars, even if the plot leading up to it and the characters involved are infuriatingly shallow. The clone troopers being led by Yoda flying in on the LAATs (one of my favorite vehicles in Scifi), the massive battle between the GAR and the droids, and of course all of the Jedi fighting in the arena still holds up in my opinion, even if the rest of the movie unfortunately doesn’t.

    It’s tragic how Padme’s character was treated after ep 1. Initially she was a poised, regal, confident queen representing her people in a war and flying around the galaxy. Then ep 2-3 comes and she can barely leave her apartment, desperately worried about Anakin, crying, and helpless. Even when she discovers what he has done, she doesn’t leap up to stand against him, she just accepts it. It’s a totally different character.

    The prequels are probably the best example of a brilliant idea (or brilliant ideas) with terrible execution. It has the concept of examining how democracy can slide into fascism, of manufactured war for the purpose of consolidating power, and plenty more political manipulation. Even the romance makes sense, and is clever on paper. Anakin grew up as a fatherless slave before being inducted into a monastic society that teaches suppression of feelings. You would expect him to be awkward and weird in anything romantic. Padme wouldn't be much better, being in politics from a young age). It's a good idea, that just doesn't seem to work on screen.

    That said most of the love it gets today admits the faults. Not saying everyone, but I like the world building in the prequels while also fully admitting they are not good films. So overall I'd say the films are a mixed bag. Cool worlds, great universe building, awful writing, and a bunch silly scenes which are supposed to be taken seriously.

  • @jasonblalock4429

    @jasonblalock4429

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@David-kd4qr Also, I think that there is more depth to them than most people give them credit, particularly where the Jedi are concerned. The more time passes, the more I'm convinced Lucas DID realize that the Prequel Jedi were kinda assholes, whose many many bad choices ultimately did almost as much as Palpatine to bring about the Empire. In that regard, it does actually do a good job at depicting a once-great society in steep decline. In particular, you could practically rename Episode 2 as "The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Master Yoda." The problem is that this is very difficult to discern, since there's never been a direct depiction of earlier better times, at least not outside of expanded materials of dubious canonicity. Without a good reference point, it's easy to take the Jedi's presentation at face value and see the movies as mostly endorsing their actions. Not to mention, Lucas still needed to deliver a story that at least SEEMED to be about good guys vs bad guys, so he couldn't be too overt in criticizing them. But either way, the Prequels get quite a bit more interesting if you go in assuming that Lucas intended the viewer to understand that the late-era Jedi had become a bunch of ineffective schmucks.

    Well, this is interesting; when I watched the movie for the first time when it came out, I realized that the "love story" felt very forced, but instead of "bad writing" I thought this was on purpose for the sake of Palpatine's plans: he forced Anakin to be in love with Padme cause it would make him easier to manipulate... That being said, I'm fully aware that is a bad movie in comparison to the classics, but is one of my favourite in the whole saga, mostly because it shows more about the Jedi, the Star Wars politics, and of course the awesome battle with a hundred Jedi at the end.

    Ah, Doctor Zhivago is one of my favorites! I'd say the conspiracy/film noir portion of attack of the clones is handled decently well... but the romance is pretty borked. That and the second act's structure (slow story romance paralleled to unrelated slow story noir) is a travesty of cinema. Empire's parallel works because the stories complement each other - 1 story is fast and exciting while not being particularly deep, the other is slow and contemplative. Get tired of the jedi training and philosophy? Have a chase scene. It works brilliantly well.

    George Lucas did not have full creative control over the original trilogy. Much of the character designs, scripts, etc were done by other people. For example the entire last act of the original movie was invented by George Lucas' wife/ girlfriend at the time. Who suggested the Death Star should try to blow up Yavin in order to add tension to the final dogfight over the Death Star. A lot of the emotional or dramatic moments that worked in the original trilogy was because George Lucas was willing to collaborate with other people. Who knew when to tell him when something was wrong or the movie was missing something. 15 years later, enter the Prequel Trilogy where Lucas has 100% control and was essentially everyone's boss who was more then willing to fire someone for not doing exactly what he wanted. And you can see the clear difference.

    @Tidder TOkay i'm going to explain this in simple terms. You just said "he gave even more freedom to others than what you described about the original trilogy above." right? George Lucas wrote, directed, produced and oversaw the editing of all three movies in the Prequel Trilogy even though he wasn't credited for doing so. Let me lay this out for you. Phantom Menace= Directer, Writer, Unaccredited Editor, Attack of the Clones= Directer, Writer, Unaccredited Editor Revenge of the Sith= Directer, Writer, Unaccredited Editor When you are the director of a movie. You are the boss. The studio hands a budget to a director to create his vision in film. Everything that is in the final product of that movie, everything that you see on that screen must be approved by the director. That's how film making works. Contrast George Lucas involvement with the original trilogy. Star Wars= Director, Writer, Music Producer Empire Strikes Back= Story By Return of the Jedi= Story By, Co writer. Do you see the contrasting difference? In Empire Strikes Back George only received a Story By credit. Which means he wrote the script outline, not even the script itself. Only in Return of the Jedi is he credited with being a co-writer. To state that George Lucas "he gave even more freedom to others than what you described about the original trilogy above." is factual incorrect. George Lucas was clearly in a far higher seat of power and involvement in the Prequel Trilogy then he was in the Original Trilogy. He directly wrote, directed and produced every single Prequel Trilogy movie. That was not the case in the Original Trilogy. Because George Lucas was not a successful filmmaker at the time. The studios resented him and almost shut down production of the first Star Wars. Obviously 15 years after the success of the original trilogy. George Lucas was the head of his own company, became a billionaire and no longer needed to rely on others to make his films. He had more then enough of his own money and power to do it exactly the way he wanted it to be done. Which is why he decided to be the head of production on the prequel trilogy. The difference in quality speaks for itself. But getting back to my original point. What you said, is wrong.

    FWIW, In the comics, they explain that Anakin actually didn't "build", C-3PO but repaired him. A robotics corporation built him many years earlier and he was eventually scrapped. Anakin found C-3PO in a junkyard, disassembled, and repaired him over time. Memory wiping is common place for droids when they are retired, thus the in-universe explanation why he doesn't mention his life prior to Anakin putting him back together.

I was going to rewatch the series after the last episode but they destroyed the entirety of the plot in s08e03. The other episodes are just further frosting the cake with more garbage.

    I wouldn't call it chicken out, both yes and no, it's a shame he didn't have the tenacity to stick to his guns about what he had in mind, but at the same the fan backlash against the Jar Jar character was just so overwhelmingly negative and toxic that he didn't want the fans to hate for sticking to his guns. Either way it was sad and unfortunate that it all played out the way it did.

    I think the problem with the love story aspect of episode 2 is pretty much like u said, too much ground to cover in 2 hrs. We already knew Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker and Anakin was Luke and Leia's father, so Lucas had to figure out how to get these two together in 2 hrs. Lucas made it harder on himself by having Padme say how he'd always be that boy on Tatooine to her and then also telling Anakin not to look at her romantically cuz it creeped her out. So how is the audience supposed to buy in to them falling in love and getting married so soon after he creeped her out? Lucas screwed himself with his shitty dialogue writing. He was a master story teller, but shitty at writing dialogue because a nerd is rarely a smooth communicater so he really should have asked for help with the love story aspect of the script.

    i almost feel like the whole railroading/lack of agency of the characters was meant to be intentional. like, almost everything that happens, like you said, is because some outside force, usually palpatine, put pressure on the characters to go or do certain things. i think lucas wanted to show that palpatine was manipulating everything and everyone, from dooku, to the clone army, the jedi, to the main characters. almost nothing happens by coincidence. even things like anakin sensing something is wrong with his mother, palpatine's been shown to be able to influence things like thoughts, dreams, etc.

Much in the same way he was able to podrace in TPM because he was unintentionally using the Force to see the future and react to danger. The whole Obi Wan noir storyline and the last 30 minutes starting at the arena is awesome Star Wars content to me. Ewan killed the role and the intrigue of solving a mystery and answering questions no one knew regarding the clones (which was great since we already know that Anakin will be Vader some day so we need more questions to answer). The arena and battle do seem to live up to some of the hype Obi wan talked about in a New Hope regarding the clone wars. Also Anakin looking for his mom was a great scene(s)

You realize with that kick ass ending that they, the "heroes" are just as lost as we the audience are. They know they are losing something..like they can feel it all slipping away but are so far behind they have no clue. We know the fate of the "secret marriage" they too are completely lost. Like I said, i can't defend it but it feels more relevant to me each passing year at the state of this country.
