Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace starring Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, and Ewan McGregor is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).

In 1977, George Lucas released Star Wars, the ultimate sci-fi popcorn flick-turned-pop-culture myth machine. It quickly became the biggest money-making film of all time and changed the shape of the film industry. After two successful sequels (1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return of the Jedi) that extended the story of the first film, Lucas took some time off to produce movies for others, with mixed success. In 1999, Lucas returned to the Star Wars saga with a new approach -- instead of picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace would be the first of a trilogy of stories to trace what happened in the intergalactic saga before the first film began. Here, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is a young apprentice Jedi knight under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson); Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader, is just a nine-year-old boy. When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter, but when they arrive on Naboo they are brought to Amidala (Natalie Portman), the Naboo queen, by a friendly but opportunistic Gungan named Jar Jar. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan plan to escort Amidala to a meeting of Republic leaders in Coruscant, but trouble with their spacecraft strands them on the planet Tatooine, where Qui-Gon meets Anakin, the slave of a scrap dealer. Qui-Gon is soon convinced that the boy could be the leader the Jedis have been searching for, and he begins bargaining for his freedom and teaching the boy the lessons of the Force. The supporting cast includes Pernilla August as Anakin's mother, Terence Stamp as Chancellor Valorum, and Samuel L. Jackson as Jedi master Mace Windu. Jackson told a reporter before The Phantom Menace's release that the best part about doing the film was that he got to say "May the Force be with you" onscreen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I'm totally with Ben on the lightsaber fights. So many people say of the prequels "well at least the lightsaber duels were better in the prequels". No they weren't! They were sterile and passionless and looked like over-choreographed dance routines fought by characters we never felt at risk. The fights in the originals were not as stylistically impressive, but they were passionate and impactful confrontations between opposing characters, not just flashy action scenes.

+WolverinesNation92 I'm getting really damn tired of this attitude. Since when has it become socially illegal to enjoy a piece of entertainment!? I love this movie. I've been defending the damn thing for over a decade and I will keep defending it. I've hated Jar Jar Binks since the first time I saw him but the positive aspects of this film far outweigh the negatives. The trailers for The Force Awakens didn't impress me at all (and this is coming from a guy whose favorite film is Return of the Jedi). I don't praise the Phantom Menace just to be contrarian, I really think it's a fun movie and I agree with Witson1991 you're a lousy parent for not letting your kids watch the prequels. God forbid they disagree with you and enjoy them.

  • @jenisedai

    @jenisedai

    8 жыл бұрын

Witson1991 Bite me. You don't know me or how I parent. OT was groundbreaking. PT was "the search for more money" done to pander to an audience he thought was out there- but failed to take the original audience into account. Millennials love PT because it's part of their childhood, but Gen Xers were adults when it came out and can't stand them. Plus Jar Jar was racist as anything, which turns me off even more. My kids have seen clips of the prequels and thought they looked stupid, so I never bothered. They love Spaceballs and are looking forward to the planned sequel. When it comes down to it, we all have our own opinions and that's fine. If you like it, that's great-,if it's what brought you to Star Wars then I'm happy the films exist. I don't happen to like them, and that's my choice. And it's my choice not to expose my kids to them. They're old enough now that if they had any interest in them then they could ask. If they had asked I would have shown them- but they've never asked.

  • @Singgen

Thessarabian FROM MY POINT OF VEIW YOU ARE BAD PARENT!!!! Ahah. Sorry. Could not resist. Sure. My comment about your bad parenting was mostly about my intention to be opposite to "WolverineNation92". And your sentence implied to me as first thought that you refused your children to watch PT, when they had a chance and you gone all nuts, like "Nope, I won't let you see it. Cause I hate it. You never gonna watch it. Not until I alive and shit. You gonna watch Spaceball and not this atrocity. I said NO!". Well, now you cleared to me that you just ain't gonna promote SW PT to them. Well. *clap*clap*. Thought there is Internet and ep 7. So eventually they will watch PT if they ever liked SW saga. Sure. OT was groundbreaking and all in it's own time. And what? PT is just about "the search for more money"? Let's forget that every product is about making money(it's only way how a person can measure the product to benefit creator). But just no. PT enhanced SW universe. It showed to us that SW is not just fairy tale with outdated design, it showed us interesting era. When Jedi weren't hunted down. It showed us what is Star Wars. It wasn't just one sandy Tatooine, that it has Coruscant. Now we have an idea how simple folk lives in this universe. It became something bigger. It introduced Jedi Temple and it's organization and so much more about other factors. If not for enhanced universe SW could never compete with LOTR, Warhammer or Warcraft and etc universes. Because it showed us that it have some background. I doubt that we could imagine The Old Republic if not for PT. That's why I love PT more that OT. Even those characters from OT. I don't buy them. I saw and read miriads about same characters. That's why I loved Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan. They had a more complex character to me. More than just a Hero, a Rogue and Princess. p.s. srsly? clips of PT? Considering how everybody just hate them and enforce this opinion on others? There were things that I didn't like and practically knew nothing about because everybody hated them. But my opinion was totally different once I could watch it and judje it myself rather the nlisten to others. p.s.s. And what? I kinda LOLed for good here. Millennials and Gen Xers? Never heard about these err... names? Whose stupid idea it was to name generations? There are new generation and old. That's all to it. It sounds to me like someone tried to bring some pathos to himself. Like, look at me I am from Gen X/Millenial. Uff. Well. Maybe I am wrong and it had some deep meaning and all. Beats me.

Ben's right about the light saber thing, and it applies to pretty much all jedi related things in the prequels as well. They're over-used and they're over powered. The Jedi should've been on the brink of extinction during the prequels, that last remnant of a more elegant time. They should be inferior to the technology of the time, they should be like monks, hidden away, mostly keeping to themselves, but still fight for the good of the universe when Sith reappear.

I think this is the only prequel where the problems run deeper than the dialog. Much, much deeper. But in 1999 I didn't give a shit. The film was a fucking feast for the eyes that we'd never seen up to that point. So give it credit for that. I realize that 4 Transformers films later it's difficult to remember there was a time when CGI to the point of visual noise was a thing people actually really wanted to see. Wisest words I've ever heard on this show, though: "Don't start your kids on the prequels". Amen.

So a few comments. First, there was some racial shorthand in the original trilogy, with the British-accented officers of the Empire...but it was definitely not a negative usage. Second, I had a more memorable and epic time waiting in line for 24 hours - I know, I know - to buy tickets for this film than I did during the movie. I, many of us, had such an incredible and unique experience of a kind that is probably even more rare these days, with other human beings of a certain similar mindset, busying themselves in all manner of old-school ways, and doing it together. A group of us learned and played this amazing card game I'd never heard of - I'm pretty sure it was made up in the line - and it was far more satisfying than the film. Lastly on a similar note, this review was more entertaining than the movie - the, sorry Ben, quiet excellent lightsabre battle aside. Well done folks!

I recently watched a making of video and Jar Jar is even played by a black guy; it was originally in part a guy in a rubber suit that they eventually completely replaced with CGI, but yeah it is a black doing the floppy legged walk saying those lines.... there's also even a bit where Lucas says "I think I might've taken it too far there but we can't do anything about it now"

For me this is the best of the prequels. Here are my reasons: 1. This is the only prequel where I didn't know what was going to happen. 2. The CGI stuff was groundbreaking and looked very cool at the time. It opened the way to things like Lord of the Rings. 3. I really liked the princess. This was the first time I saw Natalie Portman and I was enamored. She's completely ruined in the next two. 4. The pod racing was the most exciting sequence in all the prequels. 5. Watto is funny. 6. Darth Maul is cool. 7. No Hayden Christensen. There are of course many problems, but I disagree with some of the complaints. The fact that you can measure the Force in a blood test? It's the same as saying "the Force is strong with him". The amount of Force you have in you is just a potential - you still have to develop it. The claims about "racism" are nonsense: these are aliens, and whatever racial identities you ascribe to them is just your own prejudices. Jar Jar Binks? A regular comical sidekick. I find him less annoying than C3PO.

It always pisses me off when people bring up how much better the prequel lightsaber battles apparently are. There is one kind of awkward but also kind of not that bad fight that lasts about 5 minutes in Star Wars (as in 1977, I refuse to call it "Episode IV" or "A New Hope"). The other fights are taught, and character driven and they have heft and physicality. They're few and far between, making them events, and Jedi training ultimately comes off as less sword and more force and even thought orientated. In the prequel trilogy they're superflous, overly frequent, and too obviously choreographed. Did Qui Gon and Obi Wan even know about Darth Maul before facing him? Did they even care? I am have so many criticisms I could wright a whole essay, but to suffice it to say, I agree with Ben.

Before lights went out, the theater was at a fever pitch -- honestly, it was like being at a rock concert -- after the movie was over, it felt like all the life was sucked out. But we all rationalized the movie and said it was good. Only one guy had the cajones to admit it was a turd.

But the film still has imaginative locations, bitchin Pod Race scene, awesome light saber battle, fantastic musical score and some hilariously insentive racial stereotypes. "Mind tricks don't work on me, only money." says the hook nosed alien. Love that scene!

The only way to watch the Star Wars series: Episode 4, 5, 2, 3, 6. Luke is built up then brought down by his father, then flashback to see how the father came to this point, then the redemption at the end. Much better than 1-6.

The least awful prequel. I stand by that. Shot on film. Enough real locations in places like Tunisia and Italy. Great villian (with no Lucas dialogue). Two good action scenes. And a dull but inoffensive lead performance by Liam Neeson. Give me that over Hayden and Natalie eating CGI fruit any day of the week.

+nikosvault Honestly, as much as I dislike Phantom Menace, I have to agree with you. I think by far the worst one is Attack of the Clones. Unlike that movie, Phantom Menace at least looks like it was trying to be an actual movie and had what tried to pass for charm (even if it failed). People just claim this one to be the worst one because it's the first in the prequel trilogy (and thus was the most hyped and subsequently disappointing one at the time of its release) and because it has the most Jar Jar. But I would honestly take Jar Jar over that grating Anakin/Padme romance any day.

It's a high-speed high-stakes Ben Hur style chariot race through vast deserts and twisting canyons with the twist that the chariots are pulled by jet engines that roar like muscle cars.
