I have watched this channel for about 2-3 months and it has been inspiring. I was at Disney waiting on a long line and while scrolling through my recommended I saw your mini Christmas tatooine house and I loved it. After the video was done I watched almost all of your videos. When I got to my house I got an L-shaped piece of wood and for the first time ever I grabbed a can of spray paint and greeblies and created a control panel. After that I found a box, some sprinkler parts, and lights to make a droid which I named kB-430. A few months later I made a control panel and a tiny droid that could mount on kB-430 (I forgot his name). After watching your spray paint booth build I greeblified him and gave both of my droids a blue stripe (which I learned how to from your videos) I also made a Star Wars blaster, and a flashlight inspired by your flashlight build. My latest project is to build a Star Wars ship, and after watching this video I sketched out my ideas and I now have an idea of what I want it to look like. You guys have given geeks and builders something to look forward to, and for that I would like to thank you.

Speaking of Alien(s). I know Star Wars is your thing. But I would love to see some more Aliens stuff from you. Especially something more environment based rather than a prop (though I don't know if that's feasible for you if its not just a prop). I just love that retro 80's grungy sci-fi look. I spent hours walking around in Alien Isolation just looking at the floors, ceilings, walls, doors, panels, hatches, tech and all the little greeblies lol.

Brian, This was a homerun of an episode. The exploration through your mind on how you create was on point. It helped me a lot to start understanding the process. I also liked your ideas on alternative options you offered for those without the boutique tools. Also the contrast of computer & organic process you do vs. the drawing and illustration process Carissa does (which is usually where I start, then go to a computer, then deliberate, then question myself, then buy all the tools and materials, then wonder how i will film it all, then get lost in a youtube marathon and forget that i have a project in garage to work on. lol) Another cool note, was that for 15 minutes, i concentrated on your awesome project as the item that is on center stage, only to have you say at the end, its not about each items stealing the show, but properly accenting the main item (e.g. Van Oaks prop). It's humbling how you put it, but also speaks to design on a larger concept that I can appreciate. P.S. to everyone not on the smugglers room Patreon.....you are missing out. Such great content, back stage pass (wayne and Garth style), and a lot more. Sorry, I am a fan...couldn't leave without a shameless plug lol

For those without fancy tools, it's worth looking into local hackerspaces, makerspaces or fablabs. They usually do have lasercutters and such that you can use for a small fee or other form of compensation.

I also love the matte black acrylic. Layering it with gloss black acrylic is really special too. I’m lucky to have a friend, here in Portland, OR, who has a Trotec 400 laser. At $2 a minute for cutting and engraving, it’s (kind of) cheaper than the initial investment in buying one. Also, I don’t need to figure out where I’m going to squeeze one into my small apartment. I’m like you, in that I’m an image hoarder. My process is much like yours, in that I scour the Internet for many images. I take elements from different things and blend them, along with ideas that spark from other images. I also happen to cook along the same path. When I’m inventing recipes, I’ll look at lots of different recipes and mentally envision flavor profiles. The thing is I take things, ideas, concepts, and processes and shake them up together and see what they turn into. I love Carissa’s skill at sketching. I wish I was able to create in that medium, but, my brain doesn’t work that way. Thank you for showing your processes for ideation. Like you said, how you get the idea into form is less about the tool and more about adaptation. I heard someone once ask a well known photographer, “what’s the best camera?” The answer was “the one you have in hand”. A great photograph comes more from the photographer than the camera. If you learn the tools you have, then you can find ways to get your ideas into form. It’s all in the act of making....something from nothing. 😎

The weirdest I’ve ever felt was when my friends (around age 24) started borrowing power tools from me whilst all having 3d printers. I always felt they were the most expensive of possible tools so I never bought one but they’re crazy cheap these days.

Yeah, it took me a long time to pull the trigger on a 3D printer, but you are right, now days they are much more affordable.

That looks epic! It always looks epic on The Smuggler's Room. This is also very inspiring as I made a life size BB8 and I was looking into making a display stand for it and this is perfect inspiration. Keep on going Brian! I love this show!

Awesome work. You pretty much ruined everything for me Mr, Thompson. See about 2.5 years ago I visited Galaxys Edge and while bored, waiting in line for Smugglers Run, I noticed that the "crate" looked awfully familiar. It was a yeti cooler with a 4 cylinder aluminum cylinder head bolted to the top of it. So, naturally I went to KZread and the first channel that popped up was yours. I was instantly hooked! Now i can not see ANYTHING without trying to figure out how they/what they made that out of. I often ask my wife what happened in the movie we are watching because i was distracted by the background scenery. So, a sincere Thank You for opening my eyes to all the "junk" all around me I never noticed. PS my house is now full of boxes of greeblies awaiting their turn to shine. Thanks Amigo.

Brian, I love the channel. As a huge Star Wars fan since the very beginning (1977), and a maker, I am always inspired by your work. However, what happened to all the flubs, goofs, and shenanigans that used to appear at the end of each episode? :) I really loved seeing those and I am sure I am not the only one that misses them. :)

Alot of what I want to build there isn't much in the way of references. Example: The Skyway trilogy written by John DeChancie. The premis is that when man reaches Pluto they discover a road that leads to a portal which takes you to another planet. There are normally two portals on a planet 180° apart. They have been mapping this road and not found where it starts. There are alien races all along the road but we are more alike and get along for the most part. Commerce among these planets and others is a given. So how do you move goods from planet A to planet Z? By truck of course. The road is large so two way traffic is a given but given a large road the trucks are equally huge. They don't have tires they have variable traction rollers. Their engines aren't diesel but seem to be some sort of ION/JET. Scale here is from a cover of one if the books shows part of the truck and a 57 Chevy. The front left roller of this truck is 4 times the height of the car and you could fit alot of cars in the trailer attached to the truck. I've always wanted someone to obtain the movie or TV rights to this a series would be hard but a three movie deal would. The road is patrolled by vehicles that closely resemble silver VW Bettles. They do not tolerate conflicts i.e. running battles on the road. VEHICLES MUST NOT BE HAMPERED IN THE USE OF THE ROAD. JUDGEMENTS ARE HARSH (VAPORIZATION) . The first book is STARRIGGER

We are big fans of BSI (Bob Smith Industries) Products. They have a lot to choose from. Specifically we use CA glue and activator. You can also use products like "Weldon 3"

I ordered some orange translucent and matte black for my project similar to what you did, but I am creating this for 1/6 Hot Toys Boba Fett. what kind of set LED did you use in your build? I have experience working with individually addressable LED that I used for the engine effect in my Bandai perfect Grade Millennium Falcon build with an arduino. LOL! Thank you. I'm positive you can do it. There are lots of different reference sites you could check out, and I bet you can use that to work out schematics. If you can find some graph paper, that is an awesome place to start. Give it a go, i bet you can do it!

Brian, I really don't like how you've been forced to apologize for using these tools. I know not everyone has access to them but the hateful and jealous comments that must have been posted before to make you so apologetic for it makes me sad. An entry level 3D printer can be purchased for $200 now. If someone doesn't have access to that there's shops like mine that can assist and as you detailed numerous other methods to achieve the same result. Higher end tools trade cost for time savings. In the end someone that was determined could do all of this with hand tools.

Thank you. I have actually come to agree with you very much in this. I think for the longest time we just didn’t want others to be turned off from making because we used a “fancy” tool. But I agree with you 100%, and going forward . . . No apologies!

Do people still complain about you using your own tools? I would understand if you were presenting it as a tutorial, but you don't. You just share the process in making your dream room and a few side projects. Sure, someone could use your vids as a guide, but it doesn't make them instruction videos. I mean you literally say "I'm not gonna tell you how to do your project" in this video lol. Its not like you're presenting your work like one of those DIY "How to" woodworking vids that "anyone can do" and then proceed use a fully equipped woodworking shop with a planer thicknesser, drill press, spindle sander, lathe, table saw, miter saw, carpenters bench, 30 different planes and shaves, 20 different chisels and hundreds of clamps.

@@TheSmugglersRoom Aye, I get not wanting to dissuade people. But I can't stand when people complain about a maker using their own tools, just because they don't have that tool. Its honestly rather childish imo. I mean could you imagine watching an Adam Savage "one day build" and then complaining that you don't have one of myriad of specialty tools he uses in EVERY project lol. Hell, as a prop maker myself, I don't even OWN a rotary tool, a hot glue gun or an airbrush. But I still make stuff and watch vids that use those tools. I manage just fine. Aye, well, I support you because you make good stuff and have a great presenting style. Plus you seem like a pretty genuine person with a clear passion.
