Star Wars: Deck Building Game - Review - Star Ascension Realms Wars
The Rebel Alliance fights valiantly against the tyranny of the Galactic Empire. Each new victory brings the Rebels hope, and each heroic sacrifice strengthens their resolve. Still, the Empire's resources are vast, and the firepower of its Empire Navy is unmatched. With neither side willing to accept defeat, their war rages across the galaxy...
In Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game, a head-to-head game for two players, the galaxy-spanning war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance comes alive on your tabletop. In this easy-to-learn game, you and your opponent each choose a side, playing as either the Empire or the Rebels, and as the game progresses you both strengthen the power of your starting decks and work to destroy each other's bases. The first player to destroy three of their opponent's bases wins.

Star Wards DBG does have its origins from Star Realms, but improves on them. Restricting players to purchasing their faction or neutral cards changes gameplay. The force track is also another mechanic which players need to consider. Star Realms is a good game, but Star Wars DBG is significantly better.

I agree with this. I got the chance to play it the other night. It also incorporates thematic elements into the gameplay surprisingly well. Strategic decision making is also much deeper than I expected. It’s a very good game for the price.

Significantly is a stretch. Restricting players to what they can buy isn't an improvement as it can cause the market row to stagnate if one player gets all their cards out and the other player can't destroy them. The force track is also tacked on honestly. Rarely does it make a difference, you have to get it all the way to your end for 1 resource and the "odd" card benefits from it. But it certainly isn't a buying point for the game. You can also tell they've extracted a ton of content out in terms of characters etc to make expansions for , yet this box is £30 to buy which isn't cheap.

@@TheBrokenMeeple The Force track plays a large part and is always a hard fought battle in the games that I have played. Getting that extra benefit pays off and does provide an advantage to the player. The person who ignored the Force track in our games usually lost. The market row can stagnate, but it hasn't happened that often in our plays and has only been a problem if it happens early in the game before one player has been able to buy any cards. In any event, you can play with the advance rule where you can bounty/sabotage neutral cards. I do agree that FFG have extracted a lot of content out for the inevitable expansions, but I would not call the game expensive. At around $50AUD, it breaks down to around 30cents per card, which is on par with the price you pay for card based games. If someone is looking to buy a 1v1 deck building combat game, there would be no reason why you would pick Star Realms over Star Wars DBG, other than there are more expansions at the moment. Star Realms was fun, but other games have taken the formula and improved on it.

Theme aside I feel this is a straight up upgrade over Star Realms. The planet / bases system, attacking the market for rewards, the Force track... All great addition that make for a much more clever IMO. Unless you really want a simple and bullet fast deckbuilder, the Star Realms is the better pick. Also I've never met anyone say that Star Realms looks good but I guess to each their own 😁

The force track is honestly pretty tacked on, it's not a big inclusion and if it was removed I'd barely notice it honestly. I do like the base system but to have that upgrade I'm playing a game that takes twice as long as a game of Star Realms to finish.

attacking the row is nice, it's like the monsters from Ascension, it gives you something else to do with the combat points... but the force feels like an afterthough. Also the force track is kind of cheap.

Great review. Sad that they (the designers) had a chance to add some extra mechanics (like you talk about Fort) to change up the game, but they didn't. I like Star Realms alot. But the game that kind of replaced it is Shards of Infinity (can play 2-4 players) and with the "Relics" Expansion, man it makes it so much better. Now Shards isn't a quick game, it takes a little longer. Well, if you haven't play it check it out. Thanks for the video.

I love Shards of Infinity and Ascension. They are definitely family favorites. Star Wars DBG, while heavily borrowing elements from other deck builders, is a beast of its own however. The strategic elements are quite different than the formerly mentioned games. Our experience with Star Wars DBG felt like a heavy thematic tug of war to victory with multiple choices available in strategic decision making. For the price, it’s definitely a well made game. Having the experience of playing Shards/Ascension, we were able to pick up on the rules quickly.

  • @naegling

people keep saying that shard replaces star realms, but star realms is cheaper, quicker, and also have a lot of cards that either have very standard abilities like "draw a card" "scrap a card" or a combination of resources, so you can understand what the card do without much reading. That's why i think star realms is more aproachable to new players, also because of familiarity with the cards it's still the go to game when i want to play a casual game. Anyway, I have both, i'm still playing star realms more often.

The physical version gives you a different experience, especially when you enjoy tangible components of games. We own several expansions and being able to stack a cube of selected cards, to heavily randomize the predictability of the base game, is enjoyment in of itself.

Thanks for the review. This didn't appeal to me at all because of the theme. Also I noticed the reused assets as well , straight out of the previews. I suspected that if they were basing on such a strong IP , the gameplay could be either regular or something I've seen before. And well, Gut instinct nailed it right it seems. I genuinely i'm not surprised they didnt' try to innovate more. The franchise alone sells. Yet, I expect any "board-less" deckbuilder should do try to expand the horizons a bit , I think. (board-less as in : its only cards, no board with tokens or pawns . Board-based deckbuilders are Clank! , The Hunger! Runestones, ...) Ascension tries to innovate in each expansion. Even teams mechanics. Which makes it playable and enjoyable at 4 playes. Star realms kept it fast. Hero realms tried a campaign setting and rules for coop. Shards of infinity introduces the "leveling up" mechanic that ultimately ends the game in a single card play. This ... okay, seems fine.

Family brought it over to game the other night. We’re big fans of the Ascension deckbuilder. For us, the Star Wars deckbuilder felt very thematic and more strategic than Ascension. We were able to quickly catch on to the rules since they are very similar to many other card games. I would even include MTG as an influence on deckbuilders. If you’re a fan of Star Wars, I can guarantee that you’ll enjoy it. I think for the price, it’s an enjoyable game right out of the box.

  • @TheBrokenMeeple

Honestly the IP could be anything and the game play would still be enjoyable enough. The fact that its recycled Star Wars art actually is a detriment to it especially with a generic as hell name.

  • @unanimousarts

@@TheBrokenMeeple But the point is, it’s something that fans of Star Wars can better relate to. You have to think of those that don’t care much for deckbuilders or the many other themes of the similar game type. With a Star Wars theme, fans of the series will more likely be drawn to the game, even if there are other iterations that came before it. If you’re sick of deckbuilders, that’s certainly your stance. But for $30, it’s definitely a better game than Ascension at the same price (or $10 less than certain Ascension expansions).
