We had these and when the paint flaked off we'd use red hobby paint to repaint the area to look like blood. So we had a bunch of wounded figures looking almost zombiefied. Happy days.

I had some Gumby ones and they all snapped almost instantly after getting them.

Had the Chewie one. Worked at a Computer Company. We ran it over and dragged it around with a High-Lo it got pretty messed up. We used old computer chip cast offs and made him a Cyborg. It became our mascot!! Everyone loved Cybacca!

I bet they made C3PO so small to save money on that metallic paint.

Yes but unlike Funko pops, bendems actually did have a bit of a function which was bending, so in hindsight they did have a element of playability. Funko pops are just literally large lumps of vinyl plastic that do absolutely nothing but take a gratuitous amount of shelf space. literally the only thing they can do is change the poses of their head and that's not even fun. It Funko pops were smaller and they were articulated... And maybe not the way they were.... It would be far more interesting and I would probably have a lot more of them. But I have three at home and trust me they are probably the most worthless piece of merchandise I have am I collection.

Man, I remember having a bunch of these rubber-covered wire toys. I remember enjoying playing with them. Then again, I didn't have high standards when it came to toys.

Bib for what? Bib for tuna. Also, knowing that these are madd old and unbroken, watching him bend-em with reckless abandon was kinda anxiety inducing.

When you brought in Obi Wan, I thought it was Palpatine, and only realised that it was supposed to be Obi Wan when you brought it up close.

Actually I think that 'unfixed' Han Solo looks more like Chandler Bing.

The manufacturers hadn’t seen Harrison Ford, but apparently they had seen a lot of Bill Pullman 😂

I was 10 years old in 1993. I had a couple of vintage figures as a child and wanted more - I absolutely loved them. I saw these pieces of shit in the shops and I hated each and every one.

With C-3PO I'm gonna assume they're made so cheaply that the metallic paint / rubber was slightly more expensive. But I really don't know

Given how they've been doing both the Reactions and the He-Man style figures (and also Pez Dispensers), it wouldn't surprise me if they would try to resurrect these. It would be super lame, but they would probably use their reach in licenses to make some pretty hard collectables to turn down (which makes me both hate and respect them more).

There's actually still a bendems style toy today, they're called bendyfigs by noble toys, essentially the same but with better detailed molding

I googled Flintstones bend-ems. They actually look pretty good

The instant you described what a Bend-Em is, I instantly recognized them. I had a couple cheap, rather abstract figures I didn't recognize from anything like that. One was...blurry. I don't have much memory of it. The one I paid more attention to when I was 3 was some sort of very tall, thin orange thing with a snout and I think it had a tail. Later on someone made a set of car maintenance funnels that worked by a similar principle. It was a sheet of thin metal encased in thick oilproof rubber, so you could bend it into the shape of funnel you need. I'm not an interesting person.

I had some Toy Story 2 Woody's Roundup Bend 'Ems. They were actually pretty well made, but I took some strange glee in the weird articulation. Must hunt them out some time. I imagine they've colonised the attic by now.

The Han Solo in the box I'm sure is that guy from Ghostbusters that gets trapped in the statue with Sigourney Weaver. And the original one is definitely modelled on part-time absentee former PM and full-time c**t David Cameron.

I stay up until 5 AM each night, just in case ashens uploads

Some of the earliest toys I owned were those R2-D2 and C-3PO bend-ems, as well a second-hand Luke's land speeder. And yes, I did the same thing with R2's legs as Ashen did. Even when the Star Wars toys came back into style about a decade later, finding R2 was difficult, so the bend-em one was still my best option.

Is it a late night or an early morning then mate? I love the random. Hang on a minute, why the hell am I still bloody up?

I used to have some 101 Dalmatians Bend-Ems because I was obsessed with that movie and puppies in general as a kid. The first wire to break was always one of the back legs, so the dog would be in pema-pissing position.

Stu, it's 4am. Why are you reviewing toys at 4 in the morning?

On the one hand, I hated bend-ems because they broke so easily. On the other hand, I loved that a lot of shows and movies that otherwise never would have gotten action figures ended up with toys of some kind. The huge perk was that action figures cost a lot more to develop and test. But a rubber mold around rubber is actually fairly cheap. I remember I had figurines from the Disney show, Bonkers. I guarantee you, if cheap bendems weren't a thing, they never would have made any toys for that show.

Those Obi Wan and Palpatine figures look like they were channeling the Joker - pre and post acid bath...

This type of rubber really stinks if you burn them, I'd stick with crucifying them.

I had a MMPR green ranger and a few WWF bend-ems and I loved them.

I'm starting to think you could make a genuinely entertaining video even someone dropped you in a morgue as long as the couch would fit.
