my kids Love watching this! they are 2 and 4. My 2 year old, who is learning to talk, asked for KZread then asks for this video by saying "Hello!!!!" very excitedly. just like the beginning. haha

That little robot is one of the cutest things i have ever seen.Like R2D2 BB8 is just a fun character to watch.I want the toy.

Very interesting reading through those articles on BB-8. I guess it makes sense to have several BB-8's for different shots in the film, but for them to take so long to have a fully working one done so close to Star Wars celebration was a surprise and just highlights James' skill in getting this far with his droid (without Lucasfilm funding R&D!)

I burst into laughter when that BB's head fell off then at the last step it opened up and its motor came out xD

+PerunaVallankumous nah R2D2 has more personality by far. I love how he can understand English but he's programmed not to speak it and then laughs or mocks other characters like C3PO. This is just Disney bullshit made to look good and advanced technology, but there is no warmth in the droid. Of course this is just my view but I think he sucks.

Sphero's is hands-down the best, I have it and I absolutely love it.

I strongly disagree about his reaction to the sphere bob-8 version. I just got it and it works amazing and I greatly suggest it out of all the versions of the best-8. I was very disappointed when I saw the somewhat negative comment against it.

lol the going down the stairs test was hilarious! The 1st bb8 looked like he was scared and looking for an escape route, the 2nd looked like a drunk guy falling down the stairs and stumbling off into the night, and the 3rd one just gave up on life. The sphero bb8 looked like he was mad at you for poking him, looks at you and says "no, no, no", then throws a fit when you grabbed him as if he had some sort of artificial intelligence built in.

Very cool video. Thanks to James Bruton for showing us all of the BB-8 options for purchase and the robot he is building. I don't understand how 400+ people gave a thumbs down.

I prefer the Sphero , anyone else?

A KZread guy called AvE did a thing on the third bb-8 electronics he mentions the decelerator component is a gravity switch so it has a little ball in a tube connecting and disconnecting to dictate slow down or not to slow down. Cool video you did really like the showing of products.

Its a hasbro item and from what I saw when ave took it apart its just a motion sensor like the ones they put in their force fx light sabers thats make the saber make noise when you swing it

After watching The Force Awakens I can say I really liked BB-8. I like BB-8 more than R2-D2. I will say I think it would have been much more fitting to make BB-8 a SHE instead of a HE. The whole time watching the movie I just kept thinking of the droid as a she.

***** Well I can tell you in the movie that I watched Yesterday BB-8 is referred to as a HE. Every time they called BB-8 a he it reminded me that the droid isn't a she. Also be careful when posting links. It has a tendency to get you ghost banned from a video's comment section. You'll be posting away and won't realize no one can see any of your further comments.

***** I read more recent articles confirming BB-8 is referred to as a he. While I was watching the movie in English which is probably the definitive version. Numerous times BB-8 is referred to as a He. Maybe they'll retcon it in future Episode and Special Edition some she's to replace the he's in The Force Awakens. One can dream :P.

I don't think Disney conspired to make it seem as if Sphero built BB, just sloppy reporting being regurgitated through different news outlets. When the 'red carpet' version rolled out on stage, JJ credited Neal Scanlan (www.nsstudio.co.uk/index.htm) and his team. It sounds like that team included Matthew Denton, but even reading through your linked articles, it's still not entirely clear who build what versions of BB. Maybe you can expand on this, James?

For anyone else reading this and curious, here's a link to an interview with the co-founder of Sphero, where he mentions they didn't come in until after the props were built and the movie had been shot. (www.polygon.com/2015/9/7/9272595/how-bb8-works) That is a pretty disgusting move on Kennedy's part it was deliberate. And their should be a correction either way.

Yep, definitely seeing tons of old Star Wars videos these days. Guess YT's algorithms decides I should watch these now as I've been watching some Disney Droid Depot videos these past weeks. Maybe it's time to make a new video including that BB-8 from Disney's Droid Depot? They offer boxed vesions of BB-8 (and R2-D2) at their store and the parks. I actually managed to get me a Droid Depot R2-D2 and I like it very much. Controls are pretty basic but very responsive and nice crisp speaker. Now I'm planning on getting a second one and converting it to R5-D4 with extra parts offered at Disney's Droid Depot.

The Sphero BB8 is the one I want. It is cool that Sphero designed the Droid in The Force Awakens!

My wife bought me the inflatable version for my birthday (I know, I'm far too old). It doesn't work too well on our carpets, and the wheels are a bit noisy of hard surfaces, but its good fun. The problem with BB8 of course is its mechanics, you'd have to spend hundreds it not thousands to get a decent size toy that moves in the proper way - i.e. without the lean and the wobble!

Here is how can make your life simpler: Put the motor element in the big ball, using it as a stabilizing weight and for movement. Program the head motors to counteract all signals from the base motors. = Stable movement and much less sensors feedback
