Worst part is he's right. Vader even if he force chokes you to death will just straight up kill you. As we saw when The Emperor uses force lightning on Luke Palpatine likes to torture people and cause them as much pain as possible for fun before killing them. Between the two you'd want to be killed by Vader. It would be cleaner and much quicker.

Vader was known for his dark humor. Infact, when first becoming vader he was sent to kill the seperatist council. When he arrived, a nimoidian begged, "Sidious said he would leave us in peace!" to which vader smugly replied, "The message was garbled, he said hed leave you in pieces." Vader had a marvelous, if sporadic, sense of Humor! One of my favorite scenes is when he arrives at the second Death Star where the work supervisor tells Vader he's behind because he needs more men, then promises they will redouble their efforts - to which Vader replies "I hope so Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as Forgiving as I am..." I can't stop laughing at that line! So, when I saw the "choke" joke, it seemed entirely appropriate, especially considering what an insufferable ass Krennic was. Vader had little patience for pompous fools.

@@Johnadams20760 In chess, it's regarded as a solid move, when the move accomplishes 2 or 3 things at once. Why couldn't Vader have been doing 2 things at once with his statement - delivering a warning (which he obviously was), AND making a sarcastic wisecrack? I think Vader knows what his personality is, and that Vader knows full well that he is NOT forgiving, AND he knows that his underlings know he's not forgiving. I think Vader wants people to fear him, including his own officers. That's not compatible with being thought of as 'forgiving.' Indeed, the impression is that every imperial officer in the vicinity is terrified of Vader, unless they are outlier officers who are arrogant (the officer that Vader chokes in 'A New Hope,' and Admiral Ozzel whom Vader kills in 'Empire.' Both seem strangely, atypically unafraid of Vader, before he moves on them.)

Not only did James Earl Jones not voice Vader for the Kenobi show, but they actually layered his synthesized voice over Hayden Christensen's actual performance. Another big one I am surprised wasn’t mentioned was that everyone was afraid to work for Lord Vader because he killed everyone who worked for him if they failed. That wasn’t true. He actually commanded a lot of respect and admiration from Stormtroopers and working on Vader’s ships was usually for more decorated officers and personnel (which is one reason why the destruction of the Executor was such a large blow to the Empire after Endor. Some of their best personnel went down with that ship) Vader didn’t just kill you for failing he hated that many members of the imperial navy made it to high places through bribery or nepotism instead of merit. Thats one of the reasons Admiral Piett wasn’t killed when the Falcon escaped in episode V even though his failure was devastating to Vader. Piett was overall a very competent officer and Vader respected him for that and therefore didn’t kill him when he did fail.

Captain Pellaeon was actually more upset by the destruction of Executor than the destruction of the second Death Star, because almost every officer who might have been able to rebuild the Empire after the Emperor's, and Vader's, death died alongside him in the Executor when it crashed into the Death Star. That is also why funeral pyres were the acceptable way to dispose of a Jedi's body. They don't automatically become Force ghosts during the time of the Republic. At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Yoda informs Obi-Wan that Qui Gon came backs a Force ghost after learning how to do so. Qui Gon taught Yoda, who taught Obi-Wan, who taught Luke.

but that doesn't make sense since it is Qui-gonn's ghost that shows up on Tatooine to teach Ben a few things about haunting your friends once you become a ghost, and show up on some ice planet in the middle of nowhere to convince your friend's son to go to some backwater planet to learn the ways of the force, from "Grogu, Senior"..

#2 Does he ever actually have any screen time with 3PO in the original trilogy? Threepio leaves the ship before Vadar arrives. He then is in the background of the scenes on death star but Vadar only confronts Obi Wan and was too busy too notice the others till Obi Wan was dead, even then he probably only noticed Luke. In Empire threepio is in pieces by the time Vadar arrives at Bespin and the only possible time they may have been together was when Han was put into carbonite.. I think he was on Chewies back at the time. Lastly in ROTJ Vadar only meets Luke on Endor and then they both leave to the Death Star. I may be wrong but #2 on your list doesn't actually seem like it ever happened at all.

Though this story is often told in fan circles the casual viewer may not know that, as far as everyone on set knew, the most famous twist in movie history was going to be "Obi-Wan killed your father". George Lucas knew that Vader being Luke's father would change everything so he took advantage of the fact it would be recorded in post to hide the truth. Mark Hamill was told at the last minute; though his lines didn't change he needed to react to what David Prowse (Vader's physical actor) was doing rather than what he was saying. There's a funny interview with Mark from the Graham Norton Show where he tells the story of having to keep the secret for over a year, and Harrison Ford's response at the premiere.

@razumtazum3246 Жыл бұрын
The funny thing about that so-called "Why doesn't Vader remember C3PO?" plot hole is, there's no way to know one way or the other whether he remembers him or not in the Original Trilogy. Other than a few brief moments in the carbon freeze chamber in which Vader is focused on more important matters than than the damaged droid Chewie is carrying around, when does Vader have any contact with 3PO? Again, he may have caught a glimpse of him while Han was being frozen, but so what? What was he going to do? "Hey, your voice is familiar! Do I know you? 3PO?! Hey, it's great to see you buddy!" Aside from that scene, Vader never sees or has any contact with C3PO at any time in those movies, so there's no way to know what he thinks about his former creation one way or the other.

and Vader never encounters Threepio anyway in the original trilogy. Any more than he should remember R2-D2 who he spent ALOT more time with in the prequels. I always thought the vanishing of the body was somehow connected to the process of becoming a force ghost so Anakin/Vader should have vanished too. As for Obi Van's death, shouldn't Vader's blow have cut him in half like Obi Van did to Darth Maul had it really hit him? In the movie it looks like the light saber hits an empty robe, not a body. It even seems to push the robe in front of it. Also, Luke and Yoda were not killed by anyone when they vanished so maybe a jedi master strong enough to become a force ghost could also decide exactly when this happens and use the Force to make their physical body vanish, effectively committing a suicide by the Force? This would actually make Vader not vanishing logical as he died of his injuries instead of just deciding to vanish and become a force ghost like the others.
@StevieB8363
Жыл бұрын
I agree about the empty robe. The robe starts to drop before Vader hits it, and there was nothing that indicated Kenobi was still there. He transformed without actually dying - and for a reason. When Kenobi said "Strike me down and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine," it was during their duel. So if he was killed, his spirit would live on. BUT: when he saw Luke, he knew that to continue fighting would mean Luke would come to his aid - getting Luke killed. So Kenobi chose to quit, transforming himself into a force-ghost (or whatever you call it), thus passing on his own terms and preventing Luke from coming to his aid. It was also a middle finger to Vader, who poked the empty robe with his lightsabre. He was expecting a body (or pieces thereof). When he found nothing, it was clear that Kenobi had transformed BEFORE being killed. So Vader didn't win the duel, nor did Kenobi "lose". He simply quit so that Luke wouldn't throw his own life away. Hardcore fans might disagree with me for whatever reasons, but I always thought that everything about Kenobi's passing was deliberate, and that it showed what a true master of The Force he was. He not only had the ability to make the transformation, but the courage, wisdom and inner peace to do so the moment it was necessary.
@Scar-Predator
Жыл бұрын
That's not how it works. Darth Maul was cut in half but didn't die. Vader struck Obi Wan before he died. Yoda died of old age, becoming one with the Force, while Luke died from the effort his Force projection required. If you paid attention to the dialogue earlier in the film, when Kylo and Rey's Force bond was first shown, Kylo says "You're not doing this the effort would kill you." All 3 died, but not in similar ways. Obi Wan was "struck down" (more like a sort of smack) by Vader, Yoda was 900 years old, and Luke gave up living while embracing his legend to give the galaxy hope again like he did over 30 years ago.

I hate the idea/concept that Vader’s suit is designed to cause him pain because it under cuts the line emperor Palpatine uses at the end of Episode 3. “In your anger you killed her“. This line alone ensures Darth Vader will always be angry and will always be Palpatine‘s puppet. As long as Darth Vader is alive, Darth Vader will always direct his anger at himself and not Palpatine. This also goes along with the idea that Palpatine gave Darth Vader an inferior suit just to teach him to control his new body, not being able to upgrade it for 18 years. This idea completely contradicts Palpatines‘s actions in episode three where he basically leads Anakin into thinking that Palpatine is his only true friend.

As always thank you so very much for the video. Vader had a marvelous, if sporadic, sense of Humor!

I believe it was specified in "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn that the Super Star Destroyer Executor, Vader's personal flagship, contained almost every top-quality Imperial officer of each grade in the Imperial Navy. Captain Pellaeon was actually more upset by the destruction of Executor than the destruction of the second Death Star, because almost every officer who might have been able to rebuild the Empire after the Emperor's, and Vader's, death died alongside him in the Executor when it crashed into the Death Star. So serving under Vader, whilst dangerous for anyone of limited competence, was a sign of significant ability and far from worrying for anyone who was actually good at their job.
In the Rvenge of the Sith book, Anakin makes some really dark jokes to the serpatists before he kills them. It was something along the lines of : Seperatist: We were promised to be rewarded handsomely! Anakin: You don't find me handsome?

To truly be a Sith, you cannot simply cause injury to others; you must add insult as well.

Obi Wan was distracting Vader so that Luke could escape. When he saw Luke lingering he sacrificed himself, so that Luke would leave and save himself. 3PO?! Hey, it's great to see you buddy!" Actually canonically Obi-Wan predicted Anakin was going to be the death of him way back in episode 2. When they're chasing the changing before they go in the bar he says to Ani, "Why do I have the feeling that you're going to be the death of me?" "Don't say that Master, you're the closest thing I have to a father."

Hahaha! A little retroactive foreshadowing maybe.
I like that they can keep Vader’s voice going after Jones is gone. I hope he still gets paid though (he almost certainly does) and his estate should get royalties forever.
IDK who thinks Vader isn't quippy? He was cracking dark 1 liners in almost every scene 30 years before the marvel cinematic universe.
Technically since Vader told Obi-Wan on his show that he killed him. So Obi-Wan didn't really lie to Luke when he told him Vader killed his father.

Another great presentation, Jules!! Great video and Happy New Year!! :D
@StevieB8363

@@hullmees666 Except Luke wasn't safe. He was heading to the Falcon, then saw Ben fighting Vader - and would have gone to help. Ben sacrificed himself so that Luke would have no reason to stay. (Solo still had to yank his dumb ass to safety.) I disagree that Ben couldn't have beaten Vader. Firstly, he'd already done it once, secondly, he had been Vader's teacher so he knew a lot about him, and thirdly, Ben was older and more in tune with the Force. At best I'd give Vader a 50/50 chance. These are just my personal opinions and I'm not a StarWars nerd, so feel free to disagree.
Darth vader is awesome.
When the door opened in the banquet hall on Cloud City, revealing Vader, the first time I saw it, I jumped. Caught off guard by one of the most imposing and terrifying villains in cinema history.
6:39 is perhaps the most fascinating to me... "re-speecher" is just awesome.
Number 1 is very similar Han shot first. In the original releases, it is very much unclear who shot first but they cleaned that up proving Han did shoot first and the conversation with Greedo actually should have made that clear in the first place. It's classic cinematography 101, the good guy gets the bad guy talking then the good guy makes his move. That fact is lost on a lot of people. 🤷👍

In the original original Star Wars (before anyone called it A New Hope) Greedo didn't shoot. That was what made Han Solo cool from the outset
About number 7. Grand Moff Tartin and Darth Vader none of them outranks the other. We have to skip rank this time and look for Position. Grand Moff Tartin was assigned by the Emperor as the commanding officer of the Death Star, so he is in command. Vader is a V.I.P. Visitor in the Death Star, he he can make suggestions and little else. If Tarkin was outside the Death Star and moved to Vaders flagship then Tarkin would be the visitor and Vader would proof to be in command in this other situation. I hope I made myself clear.

@@andrewmurray1550 OK, do you have any military experience? If you had you should understand my comment. (In reality some garrison can be commanded by a Colonel, if this Colonel receives the visit of a General, this General doesn't take over command over that garrison. Because the Colonel is the legitimate boss there, as he has been assigned there by someone above the mentioned General.) Look, I think you didn't understand a word. Vader is IN COMMAND in his starship. If you analyze carefully Episode IV, when Vader is in the Death Star he's not barking orders at all, because the one in command there was Tarkin and that was the will of the Emperor, and Vader wouldn't go against the will of the Emperor (not yet anyway).

Always great to hear from Jules and to hear his kind words at the end of his videos =)
His memories of his childhood and heartbreaks are literally what feed his rage. He’s lost no memories 🫠
When he Vader said, "We would be honored if you joined us," he didn't mean just dinner. He was making a double entendre where the part of the Rebel crew there would both join him for the dinner AND join the Empire.
"Careful not to choke on your aspirations" is also a speech language pathology joke. My wife is a SLP and this is her favorite Vader line of all time.
In fact, one canonical comic shows Vader encountering the dismembered C3PO and allowing Chewbacca to reassemble his old friend.
I don't see why anyone would think Vader's line to Director Krennic was out of character. In TESB we see Vader has a dark, twisted sense of humor when, after he Force-chokes Captain Needa to death for losing the Millennium Falcon, he says, "Apology accepted, Captain Needa." And he does it again when he says to Lando: "Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly?" When Lando replies no, Vader says, "Good, it would be unfortunate if I had to leave a garrison here."
It's lesser known that he actually enjoyed his suffering to a degree, his new life as Vader was what made him a completely different entity
I'm pretty sure the original in theaters vader "father" line was "no luke, I am your father" then when it came to making the special edition, George opted for just keeping the no part, hence why people think the luke part was never there.
I thought it was common knowledge that his suit WAS designed to be uncomfortable to keep him always angry

In fact I think this same channel does a 10 differences episode as well. So Scott 👍 but it was great to be reminded of it.
The fact that C-3PO didn't have an outer skin the last time Anakin saw him could also explain why he didn't recognize him.
Watch Empire again. Vader 100% recognized 3P0. He literally stops Boba Fett from taking a shot at Chewie's back. At the time 3P0 had been dismantled by the Ugnaughts on Cloud City and is being worn on Chewbacca's back in a makeshift net bag. Chewie had made minor progress in repairing 3P0 and has his head on, facing behind him.
8:25 George Lucas himself said in an interview with Leonard Maltin that Obi Wan joined the force half a second before Darth Vader’s lightsaber could hit him. Obi Wan was not killed or even injured by Vader, just as Luke was never killed by Ben. 👍😉
I really appreciated the big-up at the end. Thanks James :D Right back atcha :)
I would say the misquoted one liner from Casablanca is even more famous than the one in Star Wars - "play it again, Sam"
Much respect on the outro!
In a comic, Vader actually does recognize C-3PO and is the one who in “The Empire Strikes Back” orders his scrapping at Cloud City.
#2 is just foolish. Anakin Skywalker is known to have extremely deep connections, even with droids. Even thinking he wouldn't remember anything from his deeply traumatic childhood is wrong.
The "choke on your aspirations" line is cold there's no way its out of character, Anakin had always been the type to crack jokes, now Vader just says them with a badass voice in a badass way while being badass
One other famous misquote for a sister channel, Kirk saying, "Beam me up, Scotty ." Never happened in the original series, yet is still thought to have been used constantly.
"You'll struggle to find a more misquoted movie one-liner" "Do you feel lucky, punk?" "Play it again, Sam." "Beam me up, Scotty!" (not (necessarily) a movie, I know)
HIs corpse not vanishing can be atribitured to something simple. Out of universe: the force ghost of Anikin did not exist in the original screening/movies and was added after the prequels came out. In universe: Luke is just burning the armor of Yader to try to prevent characters like Kylo Ren from using it in the future.
Thanks you explained alot.
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Yeah, the restless interfering ghost, I couldn't possibly imagine that.
I have to say it! The Luke I am your father quote is correct. It was changed over the years. In the original vhs version. This was the case. But there are adaptations of the film over decades and decades. For example when they cgi in Jabba when he talks to Han solo. They've remade the iconic film. It took ages because I got into this exact conversation with some older roomates and we tracked down the multiple versions of the film. It's truly great that everyone really does have there own version of the star wars original trilogy and even newer trilogies growing up. Had to say. It'd not a mistake. It's just an Easter egg from the past.
