0:40 - Cyrano de Bergerac. It's a play from 1897 about a 17-century French poet and soldier of the same name who's in love with his cousin, but can't confess his feelings because he's too ashamed of his huge nose. So he resorts to writing letters to her on behalf of one his cadets, who's also in love with the cousin and she falls for the poetic charm of the letters, but believes they were written by the cadet.

This episode just hammers home for me how cliquey the Enterprise senior staff are. As soon as a non-conformist shows up the Enterprise crew, they get whiny, hypercritical, and defensive (same way they got with Shelby, and later on, Captain Jellico and Admiral Nechayev). It would’ve been more interesting, if like “Phenomenon”, instead of Barclay becoming super-intelligent by the probe, he just gains the hunger to learn and do more. That way, he’s still a nervous, anti-social type, but he stands up for his ideas despite that. Then, LaForge and others can’t just dismiss it all as “alien influence”.

It's strange how they got very mistrustful of Barclay, like he was a serious threat, when he had saved the ship, and fixed the array. I almost expected Geordi to confront him "So you think you're better than us, college boy?"

@@charlesvan13, agreed. What Picard should have done was, like when Q was turned mortal, assign Data to stick with Barclay. Then, put Barclay on detached duty, hand him the giant stack of PADDs with all the bizarre problems they haven’t figured out (how to get Moriarty out of the holodeck, how the Traveler managed multi-dimensional/galactic travel, how to rebuild Lal, etc), and just let Reg go nuts.

"Does that mean that the computer's monitoring everybody _all_ the time for everything they're doing everywhere on the ship?" Yes, now you see why I don't want to use Alexa, Google Home or any of those other voice assistants. It's one thing for a military (or quasi-military) to monitor everything that goes on in their ships, it's a completely _different_ thing to pay corporations to do that in your own house. Sure, it might be nice to just speak to turn a light on, but it's really not all that difficult to just get up to flip a switch. I might be interested if someone comes up with a voice assistant that lives on my computer and doesn't communicate with the outside world unless I explicitly ask it to.

There's something primal about heat, metal, and wires wrapping itself around skin, and the panic of being trapped within all that. Superman III and the torture scene from Empire Strikes Back really terrified me as a kid, regardless of how simple those scenes seem nowadays. It's a bit different when seeing such imagery on a theater screen, and not on a VHS tape with bad tracking.

You talk about exploring the world by bringing animals to your house. IMO it's more like bringing representatives of different cultures to you, along with so much information to share. Think about all you could learn from the Enterprise and its people and especially it's computer database. The history, geography, science, food, cultures, everything. If the Enterprise shared that with them they would learn so much without leaving their home system. Plus all the information the probes gather as they head out through space.

Correct , Critical, with regards to nuclear reactors , mean the number of fissions from one generation equal the number from the previous one. Meaning power levels are constant, Sub critical means power is declining, and super critical means power is going up.

i am wondering if this would apply for fusion reactors as well. i would expect them to use a fusion reactor on this thing, not fission and also not a M/A-reactor (aka warp core), as i could imagine fusion would be completly sufficient and in this times probably the "everyday's standard energy supply unit" when no giant energies (like for warping space) are needed.

to fall into the universe....those being brought by the Giant Head People were space travelers, not merely single life forms divorced from their environment. They brought their environment- and presumably their computer info- with them. On Barclay ( my favorite character)...I wonder if the writers keep in mind that the Enterprise is a fragile island in space. If something goes wrong, they are all dead. We dont see the , presumably, frequent drills to practice Loss of Gravity, Red Alert and Battle Stations, Hull Breach, etc. So wouldnt a threat to their state of usual actually be a potential threat to their lives in such a situation. Just spit balling.

The prime directive has nothing to do with warp travel. The prime directive prohibits the interference of the natural development of a species. For pre warp civilizations this typically means not contacting them before they invent warp drive. Nevertheless the Federation will not interfere with warp capable species either. For example they will not participate in civil wars or wars between warp capable species unless the Federation is directly threatened, or if a treaty with an ally has been violated.

Um, the reason they were concerned about Barklay's super-intelligence as opposed to Wesley is because Barklay had obviously been influenced by an alien probe, and his super-intelligence was a sudden change from his norm. If Picard suddenly grew a ridged forehead, they'd likely freak out over that too. Though I'm guessing you guys would then be confused and make the argument, "But they just accept it when Worf has a ridged forehead! These writers are so inconsistent!"
