TNG aired at a time of less sophisticated TV viewers and had a broader audience than most modern shows. It really stands out when they spell everything out each episode for the randos in the audience who aren't binge-watching the whole show in one weekend. No surprise that the guest cast has fairly obvious characteristics.

I really enjoyed this episode, and more so after I thought about it overnight. Possibly because of the history of European first contact with the New World, Africa and Australia, in which there was a lot of pain but 'resistance was futile,' filmmakers always want to see a different ending than this program was brave enough to speculate. It's a better future where humans can treat their 'contacts' with respect and be cool when declined. Bravo!

Loved seeing "Lilith" in this episode. A hilariously memorable cameo. IDK why Starfleet even bothered with this species given the intel they had about their xenophobia. They clearly were gonna need a few more years before they were ready.

I think Picard's wine custom thing was an attempt at "humanizing" himself to ease negotiations. It'd be interesting to know how often this is effective when initially communicating with an alien race. I really can't see the Klingons or Romulans being impressed and even the Vulkans were probably bored. Fan fiction is a perfect descriptor for the episode. I think it also explains why the second self-insert was whisked away by the aliens at the end.

  • @headphonic8

He probably tailored it to their race based on the information they got. I doubt he would have greeted a Klingon or Romulan like that if they've been spied upon and learned about their culture.

Though Next Gen is one of my favorite shows, I will admit that one of its biggest faults is that episodes don't generally lead into other episodes. The woman they take aboard here is never seen or mentioned again, and in the Offspring, Lal is never brought up again, even though it should be a huge event in universe.

The few minutes these characters was on screen for the episode they were one dimensional? Sure some of them were to play their part. Not sure I agree that the Chancellor, hospital chief and maybe scientist woman was just that. Maybe the scientist. And again I hear the show getting judged by it's level of character development. I just don't quite get that. It's an episodic show about exploring wacky or philosophical ideas in a mostly non linear fashion. For the main characters there still should be some of course and on that I understand the critique but not so much for what I know so far to be a one off race in 1 episode who are here as a narrative device.

There is much debate as to whether Riker was raped in this episode. Lanel offered him a choice between captivity and a chance for freedom based on whether he agreed to give her his manhood. It was obvious which option he chose. Technically, I think it could be considered rape. In this case, he clearly only consented for his freedom.

  • @macktheinterloper

While I agree with your criticism of TNG's one-dimensional characters, you can't really expect a syndicated show with self-contained adventure of the week storylines to care about anything other than the main cast. Everything else is just a backdrop to their wacky space adventures. I'm pretty sure the core audience didn't care much either. I certainly didn't when watching them as they originally aired. Of course now I do, and it's infuriating me, and it's all your fault.

Picard offer Durkin wine.....ie: alcohol. How does he know how the alien physiology will react to alcohol? After all, alcohol is a poison. A very tasty poison, but poison non the less. Picard would find it very difficult to explain that one to Starfleet Command: "Er, well, we invited one on board and then I poisoned him and he died." The Riker-Nurse thingummy part is hilarious. Riker is like Kirk on steroids. Oh and if I was offered the opportunity to leave Earth and go to the stars on a ship like the Enterprise, I'd be off like a bloody shot!

Imagine a show like this but with The Expanse's attention to details or something. I've never understood why people think Picard is the best captain. Dude's a hypocrite. Janeway and Sisko weren't hypocrites. Kirk was just a fuckin weirdo haha.
