Star Trek Retro Review 'Who Watches The Watchers' - The Picard!

Ойын-сауық

Star Trek Retro Review returns with 'Who Watches The Watchers' an episode that is peak Star Trek (especially in its exploration of the infamous, Prime Directive). The episode causes some deep canon/lore issues, especially with the future movie, Star Trek: Insurrection. Nevertheless, the episode is consistently entertaining, backed by a wonderful Patrick Stewart performance as Captain Jean Luc Picard.
This is a review/critique, with the footage used in the video as an example of FAIR USE!

Remember that the Baku in Insurrection *were* an advanced society, but chose to live without technology. I’m not going to claim that Picard is written terribly consistently in the movies versus the series, but unlike Shaw claims, he didn’t fully throw out the Prime Directive to snog a villager 😊

This is totally fair. And the Shaw comment is still an all time great

So, the Prime Directive didn't apply in Insurrection, since they HAD Warp Travel before and surrendered it. They had the capability, but CHOSE not to.

I think them being there in the first place, meaning, having a cloaked device for whatever the reason was, gave them a pass on the Prime Directive's policy, because it's (the Prime Directive) also been used as a reason to fix whatever they had done in the manner that seemed least interfering.

I like to think he learned from this episode and it informed his response in insurrection.

To be fair because of this episode predates insurrection, he may have, go with me on this, changed over time. He learned from his experiences, changed his position on various things. I'm not defending Insurrection, it leaves much to be desired as a story to be sure. But to see Picard having more empathy and a desire to protect a primitive race who's been interfered with doesn't surprise me.

4:34 Yeah, Picard's atheist rant is the worst part of the episode for me -- so much so that I think it brings the entire thing down somewhat. It turned a solid B+ in my estimation into a B-. Imagine a person of faith watching this episode and coming to the part where Picard basically calls them ignorant and superstitious. What an insult. I should know because I am a person of faith.
