Star Trek Prodigy USS Protostar Detailed Breakdown

This is Star Trek Prodigy's new starship the USS Protostar. Captain Kathryn Janeway will be there in the form of an emergency training hologram. This is CBS Trek's first all-ages sort of show, though obviously primarily aimed at kids. Here's a breakdown of what we know so far about this new starship.

If this does end up being one the deep space vessels sent by Starfleet, you’d think it would be a little bigger than the size implied here! Voyager was never meant to be a deep space vessel and it dwarfs the Protostar, if this scale is correct. Also, new Junkball! Yes!!

Maybe starfleet was so upset that the real Janeway stranded her whole crew in the delta quadrant despite there being other potential ways to destroy the caretaker device after using it to get home, they wanted to replace her. But they knew that would affect crew morale so they created a hologram of her that would secretly murder her (or like, put her into a coma) in her sleep and assume command. With nobody the wiser. But then they thought "nobody will fall for this" and just made her a training hologram because Barkley had already made a fully functional Janeway hologram for some reason. Little did they know, the crew of Voyager were dumb enough to fall for this because they did one time when the doctor did it to like the whole main cast.

@@geekinitwithjimclassic8240 This particular series could be taking place in the Kelvin universe yes (since we know the Kelvin timeline has SF uniforms from mid 24th century as they were seen on TNG) ... however, there ARE ways to go around this and still have Prodigy take place in the prime universe and explain away the nacelles. We know the prime universe knows about the events that took place in the Kelvin timeline... Discovery confirmed as much in the 32nd century (and also re-affirmed it takes place in the prime universe). I also remember that when Admiral Janeway went back in time in VOY final episode 'Endgame', she came from about 26 years into the future. Its possible that in that timeline, Starfleet learned of the Kelvin timeline. Admiral Janeway also brought back her entire database of the future to Voyager. It stands to reason she would download it into Voyager before departing to destroy the Borg Queen. Its possible this is how our prime universe learned about the Kelvin timeline. Lookin at the registry of the Protostar... it suggests the ship was built about 1 or 2 years after Voyager got lost in the Delta Quadrant. After Voyager returned, its likely the Protostar was equipped with experimental technologies from Voyager's database, and also modified to include Kelvin style warp nacelles (which replaced the original nacelles the ship had when it was first built). Prodigy takes place 5 years after Voyager returned home... more than enough time for all of this to happen. Either that, or Prodigy takes place in the Kelvin timeline (which could easily follow the prime timeline events closely the farther in the future it goes)

I think it would be most reasonable to conclude that the three Deep Space ships sent by Starfleet to intercept Voyager would likely be Galaxy Class ships. They're designed for trips like that, would have Lots of Cargo space to store for a long trip, and would be able to defend themselves well in the journey. Realistically, they're the most logical choice. Also, it would be safe to conclude that the three ships would set up Subspace Buoy's to keep in contact with Starfleet as they went on their journey, so it's very likely that when Voyager made it home, Starfleet ordered them to turn around and come home. No need to risk them being out that far anymore.

Going by the timeline, The Protostar would have been built before the Romulan Supernova, which means it's more likely that the nacelle design introduced in the Protostar was either extrapolated by the Kelvin Timeline Starfleet from the sensor data from scanning the Narada, or they somehow got the design right from it (And if the Narada was assimilating Starfleet vessels before it went through time, it might have incorporated some of those nacelles).

@@pepperVenge You've got that a wee bit arse about face my friend, it was Gene that did not want Partrick Stewart and it was the producers who badgered Gene into accepting Stewart, at one point Gene sent a message out saying he did not want to hear the name Patrick Stewart again, before he eventually relented but still treated him poorly initially. In a roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Patrick Stewart recalls how Gene Roddenberry did not want him cast as Picard, and seemed to disprove of him on set, saying "It was clear he couldn't understand why I was there." - Patrick Stewart, sept 13th 2020. As for the man who would have played Picard, the role initially was given, yes that's right, given, to a black actor Yaphet Kotto, who turned it down. Only then did they move on in search of another Picard. "Yaphet Kotto was an amazingly well-rounded actor with a dynamic presence on stage and screen, so it is perhaps not surprising that when Star Trek: The Next Generation was being cast, his name appeared on the shortlist for Captain Picard. Kotto was not only considered for the role but actually offered it, an offer he ultimately turned down. " screenrant.com/star-trek-tng-yaphet-kotto-captain-picard-next-generation/ Later Kotto would go on to describe it as an unfortunate choice on his part. I can only wonder what may have been.

Why would the Federation make a Emergency Janeway Hologram? They wouldn't. Who would? The Kyrians from "Living Witness," this is a hologram made by the same people that eventually came up with the Warship Voyager and the gloved Janeway of 'Violence, it's the Starfleet way'. OK, probably not, and the real answer will be a lot more boring.

or y'know, species 8472, since they had an entire starfleet starbase/colony where they pretended to be starfleet themselves, they would totally be able to make a 'perfect' replica of a federation vessel, in the delta quadrant, even down to the ships's EMH/ETH/ECH systems.

Could be yet another fragment of a future timeline that now never happened. Think about how many times survivors in a different timeline mucked about to rescue the ship, sending messages, overrides, and even a Janeway at the end. Maybe alternate Janeway tried sending an experimental ship back with a training program on how to use it, or someone else that knew her.

Why would the hologram be an emergency hologram? The Doctor was an EMH because the technology was cutting edge and limited. Only suitable for a backup. Even during Voyagers run we see that the 1st gwn EMH was flawed and replaced by newer better ones. We see in Picard that holograms can be employed as regular crew on civilian ships. There's every reason to believe that the roles for a hologram are far more diverse by the time of this show.

This takes place 6 years after Voyager, and Voyager brought back slipstream tech. Look at the shape of the saucer compared to the Dauntless, its in that same geometry to help with slipstream. Plus its an NX ship, which as you said is experimental. What makes more sense is this ship is a slipstream prototype they were testing, probably on remote control, and something went wrong and it didn't show up where it was supposed to, and ended up on the planet in the Delta Quadrant where the kids find it.

The computer panels look like a cross between LCARS and the earlier displays from the TOS movies. I guess Starfleet designers wanted to give it a retro feel. An engine with an air intake would actually make sense in a more sci-fi setting, where they don't use sorcery to ignore gravity. A planet's atmosphere is an unlimited supply of propellant. The nacelles aren't traditionally used for conventional drives so... an air-breathing FTL engine? I mean... can't be worse than teleporting mushrooms, right?

The way the ship looks - despite the question of size - I'm somewhat sure that the ship looks like a Nova-class or Rhode Island class starship. In Voyager, the Nova-class is canon in the episode where the USS Equinox made its appearance in the show under Captain Rudolph Ransom.

Looks like a Nova Class mixed with the Dauntless, and then JJ’s warp nacelles. I’ll put my money on “flung here in a wormhole” method of arriving in the Delta Quadrant since such a small ship traveling there conventionally seems like a big stretch in this cartoon about future sci-fi space techno wizardry.

  • @Michael_ORourke

There's so many possibilities for it to be in the Delta quadrant. It's an NX experimental ship so I wouldn't be surprised if it has a non-conventional warp drive, maybe a slipstream drive or something. Or it's there because of a wormhole, or the Caretaker, or a Borg transparent conduit, or the mycelial network, or anything else.

The Protostar's top "bridge" canopy has an H Type Nubian yacht or a Nubian Star Skiff. Basically Padmae Amidala's private ships from the SW Prequals. It seems someone is making either a sort of Easter egg, or a nod to Star Wars, as this ship really has a vibe of something that the Naboo would build.
