More companies need to realise franchises are a setting to tell stories they can be different genres

For a while now, I've been saying it'd be interesting if Star Trek branched out into Horror. Many classic episodes were only a decent effects budget away from being horror in the first place.

@@nicholassmith7984 Trek is indeed a good conceptual match for horror. I mean, the Borg alone....

@nicholassmith7984 there was an entire first season story arc for TNG that was literally about a malevolent alien species that infected hosts and took them over, and ended with a legitimately frightening cliffhanger episode that was never officially resolved. You could conceivably start a series based on that, especially since the main body of the invasion force was many years out. The ST galaxy is huge, and there is infinite potential for actual no-fooling horror.

That parasite story kinda developed into the Borg. And first contact (one if the best ST movies) is in parts a sort of zombie movie. SNW also had a lot of references to the Alien franchise. And I would be here for a pg 18 star trek horror movie

If they did an episode in clone wars or rebels with Star Weirds that would be epic
This was the show that got me into Star Trek, no lie. I had watched a couple of the movies and few other episodes but I have watched this show with so much joy, it got me invested in the universe

Same, Lower Decks got me hooked into Star Trek and now I’m binging Star Trek TNG.
The fight scene in the first season finale is actually oddly amazing and made me fall in love with the show. The music!
You all must have missed the ToS movie "Search for Spock" where Kirk asks, "Mr. Scott. Have you always multiplied your repair estimates by a factor of four?" and Scotty answers the question directly and openly, "Certainly, sir. How else can I keep my reputation as a miracle worker?"
Personaly my favorite comedy of Star Trek has to be the Orville, mainly because I love its side characters. But this show is a high second

No reason we can't enjoy both.
My father was a huge star trek fan and would watch re-runs whenever he had a spare moment. Star trek has been a passive part of my life for as long as I've had memory. Whenever I try to watch videos about star trek I find them dry and boring or too worship-y. Your video was witty and well paced. Your love of the series clearly shines through but you don't put it on a pedestal. I have immediately subscribed and look forward to what you do in the future.
Me personally, I think Star Trek is at it's best when the writers smoke crack
In all honesty I found this really entertaining interesting and informative I really love it I love Berry's box
Like I always say when talking about Star Wars, it's a big galaxy with a long history. There's room for lots of different characters and stories.
Love the thumbnail inspired by smudge the cat.

Thanks! I made that so I worked hard on it.
The fact that hes wearing a star wars shirt throughout the whole video
I hope Garak makes an appearance in lower decks. I could see him convincing Mariner into some shenanigans.

I always believe Garak is the culprit until proven otherwise.
This one earned my subscribing. Thank you for appreciating Lower Decks 🖖🙂
As a Trekkie, this show comes off as a love letter, a satire, parody, and an earnest deconstruction and reconstruction of the Star Trek franchise. And the characters are all likable and I love seeing them grow up from their initial start. Mariner and Boimler maturing especially. And seeing the comments of people who got hooked to ST with Lower Decks, it warms my heart. As of now, we’re about a month away from season 4, so I’m excited to come back and see how the Cerritos
I love this! Great artwork, great video. I didn't know the snippet about Scotty overestimating how much time it takes to do stuff. Thank you for putting this together!

Yeah, when they rescue him in TNG from a crashed ship's transporter buffer, he flat tells Geordi he always padded his estimates because he knew ahead of time that Kirk would demand it faster, then act like it was going to be a huge challenge until he was off the comm.
Delicious, finally a non-Trekkie reviewer of this series :P I'm glad to see others give it its due, it's a great series, and I'm glad to see someone enjoy Mariner as much as I do.
Love what little I have seen.
To boldly laugh
That idea that 'all stories are conflict' has been taught until no-one can write anything else, and Roddenberry was old enough to realise that. Most traditional stories (the ones that have lasted thousands of years) are about 'the getting of wisdom', 'how to be a complete human' and such things. Star Trek often achieved that, today, not so much. Least of all in the most recent movies. The detective story rules suggested and then enforced by a certain detective story organisation list ten things you are not allowed to to do. These ten things are all present in detective stories before the club existed, and these stories are great and lasting for that reason. New ideas, well delivered. Infinite diversity in infinite combination. Easy to ignore, hard to accept. Laziness is not an excuse for lazy writing. On the other hand, much of Star Trek is better than the pulp magazine stories it also grew from. When it's a converted western (John Carter of Mars), a converted Conan or Tarzan novel (Carson of Venus) it's pretty ordinary. When we come to something like the Lensman series, we have to balance the idea of a literal superman against the codes of behaviour that hopefully rule him. A man without fear who can do almost anything , limited only by his morality. No wonder the Green Lantern movie was a flop. This central theme was utterly ignored.
"Lower Decks is first Star Trek series I can think of that says: 'Yes, Humanity has come a long way, but we can still improve, we can still be better'." You're really just going to pretend DS9 doesn't exist? Even though you referenced Garrik here in this review??? Regardless, this was very enjoyable, thank you for making it.
Woah I just sat down and watched this whole thing in one go! Huge testament to how engaging your writing and speaking style is, awesome video and I learned a bit about trek lore :DD
Honestly it's a crime you don't have 5,000 subscribers. This is a great quality video that honestly got a few laughs out of me.

Story of my life. But thanks!
This was beautiful!
I'm an old Trekker. I was a preteen when TOS came out. It was the first attempt at quality science fiction. I was too young and TOS was too novel for me to see the cringe. TNG had the budget but it was so dull. DS9 was great story telling. I agree with Steve Shives that the episode "Benny" should be the ultimate Star Trek finale. VOY has many great shows especially once 7 of 9 appears (different writers?). I love "The 7 and The Doctor Show"'. As to Discovery...remember Krusty's reaction to "Worker and Parasite"? But Lower Decks? We got Star Trek back! Lower Decks IS Star Trek.
I heard that the reason why the pilot episode is so Rick and Morty-ish isn't to appeal to the fan, it was done to appeal to the executives responsible for greenlighting the series. Once it was too late and they were greenlighted, then the actual ST plot can be insidiously inserted.

Honestly I wish they'd made a proper parody, like an adaptation of John Scalzi's Red Shirts. I'm happy this show exists as it does for the hard-core Star Trek fans, but damn did I want Generation Kill in space.
This is a stellar deep dive
The orville is the best startrek. Lower decks is the best spin off so far.
Great video!
very well done!
As a newer fan of star trek, maybe the last six years, and someone who grew up with the Simpsons, Futurama, and adult swim. Lower decks is top tier in both categories.
Lower decks is just a giant love letter to star trek. It reminds me of Galaxy Quest which doesn't make fun of Star trek but lovingly parodies it. And of all the new trek shows it's my favorite followed by SNW

Big Star 🌟 Trek fan and loved Lower Decks ,this show from the start. appealed to my chaotic nature. When first hearing about The Roddenberry Box, that had to go. Things didn't ring true. No conflict between humans? As Mariner would say ,"Get the F% outta here.

Please notice that Beckett Mariner is a throwback human, arguably a savage, a teen-aged thug with enough brains to see herself, but cannot. She's learning and growing over the series, interestingly.
Boimler is not Crusher. Boimler is Judas Rimmer 2.0. Vast improvements, but sill a little weasly and focused on rules.
Apart from possibly SNW which I've not seen yet (thanks to Paramount+ firewalling everything they can) i think Lower Decks is the most Star Trek of any of the recent Treks. It keeps the heart of what Trek felt like when watching. And it actually is funny too.
"A wealth of Star Trek"? Uh, a 'plethora' might be the better term. Especially to the part of the definition that uses the word excessive... More is not necessarily, better. At least Star Trek:Lower Decks shines through...

Me too
I think Prodigy is also a strong entry.
I want to get word out that if any gamer developers will make building game call Star Fleet Academy about building department and complexes and a ship yards all in one with ranking tiers and launching your own fleet and battle in space. Make it go viral and approach #Bethesda to take up this idea. Get back to me on that.
0:44 I had to go check and see if Nelson Mandela died in the 80s or 2013 after that line. Thought I'd slipped into an alt-universe again for a moment. Hey, where'd this goatee come from?
I may not be a big star trek fan at all... like only watched the 1st movie... didnt help. Then the remake/beyond ones those were interesting but the 1 show that had me just hooked from the get-go is Lower Decks cuz its concept and characters and animation is just ao good imo.

That’s what Garak wants you to think…
So according to Gene Roddenberry everyone in 24th century took Vulcan's philosophy and is emotionless? Wow... that would be amazing and bor... ekhm! interesting show. P.S. Not really.
To be honest I hated the first Lower Deck Episodes. My biggest Kritik it´s attacking the classic Star Trek. But then it changed and i find it ok even liked it a bit. But One big Kritik @SpBurke there is a big difference with other parodies of Star Trek. There are not Cannon. Star Trek Lower Decks is Canon and that's where i have my problems with. But after ST:D and Picard i changed. Now i decide whats cannon for me but to late. I lost my passion for Star Trek.
Star Trek always had humor and it handled it quite well. Lower Decks goes way too hard on the comedy to the point where it becomes annoying. The characters are shallow and unrelatable, the situations are convoluted and trite and the storylines are awful. A show that handled the balance of comedy and good storytelling is Final Space. The characters were wacky but believable and had some depth. The story was engaging. At times it was exciting because you'd be concerned about the well being of the leads. It found plenty of time for humor in the different interactions and situations they found themselves in, but it was never so goofy as to completely take away any stakes from the narrative. The Orville is also a much better example of a Star Trek doing a funny. Lower Decks can suck my Trek. It's awful and if you like it and I'm hurting your feelings right now all I can do is apologize... I truly wish you had better taste.
This show is awful... "This show is that really annoying kid in school who would talk really fast and be as goofy as possible to try and be funny but in reality is just really annoying." -That comment I found somewhere that perfectly describes the show. The Orville is so much better! Even after Disney infected it!
