Pike's orders were only to prepare to beam the endangered crew aboard, not to actually do it. Sadly because of this mistake all souls aboard the shuttle were lost.

In-universe, SNW takes place before TOS. SNW-era Uhura was younger and less sure of herself, and was still trying to decide on a career path. She wasn't yet the confident communications officer we saw in TOS.

@@possibly_a_retard At this point in the chronology of Star Trek, Uhura isn't a communications officer; she's a (final year?) officer cadet doing what I assume is the equivalent of fleet time, which involves a deployment to the Enterprise where she rotates through the various departments on board. In this episode, she's doing her tactical and security department assignment. Now, I will admit that letting a cadet - even one who's on her final stage before receiving her full commission - do live fire control in an actual combat situation is kinda suspect, but this is Star Trek, that isn't the most military show ever, and it's also a 23rd century starship where the user seems to plug in target details and let the computers do the hard work. Not to mention, she has the ship's actual tactical officer keeping an eye on her.

I don’t watch any of this NuTrek (Picard is the only NuTrek I’ve seen, and overall I didn’t like it. Season 3 was a significant improvement though), but man, that original Enterprise is absolutely gorgeous with today’s CGI.

The first two seasons of Picard were indeed complete garbage, but judging all of the current Star Trek shows by literally the worst one is a mistake. Strange New Worlds and Prodigy are amazing, Lower Decks started a little slow but is great fun, Short Treks was cute, and I've even found Discovery improving each season.

SNW is solid modern Trek. It pushes social boundaries without being distracting and, most importantly, the show FEELS like Star Trek.

  • @SimonBuchanNz

Specifically, SNW manages to thread the line of unifying the intense sillyness and melodrama drama of TOS, the complex philosophical questions and debates of TNG, and still squeezes in some character-based drama like DS9. Even the "silly" episodes are still taken seriously and have everyone act in character and quite professionally. It's not perfect (the silliness can get... very silly), but if you aren't TNG or bust, there should be more than enough for you there, and nobody says "science, fuck yeah!"

I don't watch it for a lot of reasons. One of them is that I don't have a screen fourteen feet wide and three inches tall to match the aspect ratio.

You should give SNW a try. If you're a fan of TOS, TNG, or DS9, odds are you'll like SNW as well. Also, Discovery started out... let us say, not so great. However, the fourth season of Discovery is some of the best Trek ever to hit the screen. And I WILL die on that hill. 🙂
