It’s wild to me how my brain perceives that as perfectly normal. It wouldn’t have crossed my mind that it was an added sound effect.

Same for the door shutting when it cuts from Riker outside the room to inside.

Yeah these all involve a ton of sound work. That’s actually what impressed me the most when I first found these. Anyone can splice some clips together, but to keep the background music, audio effects, other dialogue, etc seamless with the edits is not trivial. Then ones like this take it over the top with extra audio effects as appropriate!

Though that said, the tapping was rhythmic enough that I would’ve probably sought-out the sound effect when they double-tap comms to activate a beacon or turn them off, and blend that with the main activation noise. Right now it’s clearly all the same sample, with the third instance interrupting the second. That’s very very minor though. And, indeed, I’m not the one putting the effort into micro-timing sound effects - not anymore anyway! I haven’t done that in years, though I do kind of miss it. Not these exact noises, but foley editing in general. (Actually, watching for a third time, it’s marginal. Too slow for the double tap sound effect, but not quite slow enough to avoid clipping the end of the sample. Oh well!)

I love how Troi's glance at Riker becomes a judgmental look with the intake added in! Hilarious edit.

Riker walking around while using his communicator is like that dork on the bus having a conversation with their friend on speakerphone.

Shout-out to the polite Borg that gently moved his hand out of the way of the phaser as it went by. Never rude and professional _even in regenerative phase!_ I gotta give 'em the full five stars, they've earned it! Will assimilate again!

Ryan even added the com badge sound.

He got was very serious, then lightened up for just a second, then went right back to being very serious.

"I knew you were pale but you need to get some sunlight, sir!"

There are so many outtakes for BOBW. I would love to see the entire two parter with all the INtakes

It always bothered me that Shelby is speaking over her communicator, pauses to listen to Worf then hits her communicator again to continue speaking. You were already having a communication with Riker!!!

I'm reliably informed that there is no consistency about tapping communicators throughout the show. The makers of the "Star Trek the Next Generation technical manual" were forced to declare that tapping the communicator is "habitual" and not actually necessary.

@@tormuse2916after all, half the time a double-tap activates an emergency beacon, while the other half of the time it turns the whole thing completely off! Better hope it doesn’t decide to do the wrong thing in an emergency.

Now that I've continued and finished watching The Orville, I realize its 1st and 2nd seasons are much like watching these edits: it's Star Trek with bloopers left in and carried away to its fullest.

Brilliant.

Right there at the end it looks like Stewart almost breaks as well.

I wish new star trek was filmed like old star trek. It just throws me off looking at these new shows. They lack...heart? The humanism philosophy that gene believed in. The new stuff is so dark both visually and spiritually (not in a religious way)

It's the same reason almost every new Star Wars sucks, the new Lord of the Rings sucks, it's what happens when creators don't respect or love the medium they are working with. I remember one of the new Star Trek series had a scene with this female officer insulting and degrading a subordinate and it was the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen. This is supposed to be a military. I lost all interest and never watched another episode.
