I was always struck by one scene between B'lanna and Seven, after Seven goes off to fix something without telling anyone first. Seven of Nine: I am unaccustomed to working in a hierarchy. In the Collective, there was no need to ask permission. B'Elanna Torres: If you're going to be a member of this crew, get used to it. Procedures exist for a reason; we've got to work together, follow the same set of rules... Seven of Nine: Lieutenant? B'Elanna Torres: [musing] I was given that lecture once. By Captain Janeway, when I first joined this crew... B'Elanna Torres: [to Seven] If I could adjust to Starfleet life, so can you. Seven of Nine: Of course. I am... sorry for the inconvenience. She grew!

B'Elanna was a fantastic character. With the very same personality traits, she could have been awful, but the balance between strength and vulnerability was brilliantly struck.

Im in the other camp. I felt like they pushed too hard to make her soft and vulnerable. Had they taken those same traits in another direction you would have gotten something similar to 7 but with more Qplah`s and less efficient and perfection. It would have worked out just fine. By the time she was going to break up with Tom, her passiveness was wearing too thin.

B'Elanna has always been my favorite Voyager character. I definitely could relate to the anger and emotional numbness at one phase of my life, plus her no-nonsense engineering as well. If she's not returning on-screen to Trek, I'd love to hear her voice again as a ship's computer, or at least get some mention. If Trip could get Tucker Tubes, she should get a Torres (transporter) scan for finding crew members by their bone minerals.

It was a relief when the writers figured out what to do with her beyond "Omg I'm a half Klingon/human" in the first season and she had an interesting character arc. I love the majority of the cast, but she's been my inspiration for figuring myself and my heritage out more, me being Puerto Rican/White (Irish/English). There's a lot of fight/temper in me like a Klingon, so she always spoke to me on a deeper level. Bonus, she's also tiny like me and that's kind of hilarious. (Did anyone else notice the cast is really short or average height?) And technically she was more Hispanic representation on television, as her birth surname is Caballero. Side note, I said if I ever had a girl I'd name her Baylana (way easier spelling and grave symbols in names probably don't always work in real life.) I just think the name is pretty, even though the character is sic awesome. Woot! Another great video!

Although Roxann Dawson said she wouldn’t be returning to Trek, I wonder if she’d be open to having a very brief cameo. If I were writing for a Star Trek: Legacy episode, I’d probably make B’Elanna the director of the newly rebuilt Utopia Planitia Shipyards and with the rank of Commodore. Seven could reach out to B’Elanna for help with a mission. And they could name drop people like Janeway, Tom Paris, or Miral (Tom and B’Elanna’s daughter). Or B’Elanna could talk about how she’s preparing to deliver a guest lecture at Starfleet Academy. Just some ideas, but Terry Matalas would probably write it better than I could.

Many of Voyager's highlights are with Torres; episode "Prototype" while under discussed is one of the best episodes of sci-fi in my book. Dawson plays Torres with so much passion, but also an intellectualism that's more about rugged curiosity if not progress than it is brute force. She created life in Prototype, and I think she is my favorite engineer in Trek, especially in terms of knowledge and but especially malleability. Some believe Voyager made it back to the Alpha Quadrant in such good condition because Torres ran a tight ship! :)

Extreme Risk does provide some insight on how depression can make you feel quite numb about everything, from people you like, places you enjoy, interests you find relaxing, all becoming something you just can't connect with any more, and you try and find ways to replace them, only to end up causing damage to yourself, and others around you, sadly, the cure-all at the end of the episode isn't representative of what truly needs to be done, as it's a long process, one that some, including myself, never seem to reach the other end of...

Make allowances. Confine her to quarters for 48 hours and give her a stern warning. C. Let Chakotay handle it... this time. D. Promote her to chief engineer. I recently watched "Extreme Risk" Although it is groundbreaking to address depression in a TV show of that era, it is a very poor representation of depression B'lanna is effectively cured by the hollow deck visit and saving the delta Flyer. As someone who batted depression, I feel that the episode, although a valiant effort, suggests depression can be cured by just facing your issues once, then you're golden

  • @generalilbis

I'm not sure we can say that B'Elanna was cured by the end of "Extreme Risk", though I do see your point in how she was behaving. I mean, her efforts to have the EMH tinker with Miral's genetics to minimize her Klingon heritage because of B'Elanna's own lingering self-worth and self-image issues as mixed species individual definitely stand out...though I agree there should have been more touchstones and temporary backslides to her road to healing after "Extreme Risk".

Unless they were willing to make it a long-lasting character ark, they only had a few episodes at most to work with to get the whole depression thing done. For writing new episodes, it would be problematic to have a highly depressed and self harming chief engineer. Also, the captain would find out and replace her. They could have kept some lingering traits, perhaps. But all in all, they did ok with what they had. I absolutely see where you are coming from though. Depression isn't solved with some realizations and we are all better like it never happened. Maybe she is on some good drugs that make it go away offscreen that we don't know about. I hope you all are doing well.

@kevinroth2900 in the amount she was showing in the episodes, absolutely. Some depression wouldn't hurt the crew. But she was doing potentially suicidal things. She was starting to show some small signs of neglect. Would you want a potentially suicidal and more and more neglectful chief engineer, when you might get into battle soon? That is what I am saying. So yes, I do think she would replace her when she is still in that state for too long. I am pretty sure her first officer said something that hinted to that. He doubted to let her on the mission. He wouldn't have before he had discovered she was doing that to herself.

ugh the full klingon, her inflections were terrible, she. paused. be. tween. each. word. I can’t stand the episode for that reason. that’s not at all how klingons talk. I can’t stand the evil bashir ds9 episode for the same reason
