    I have a cheap copy of this plane I bought new for about $12.00 American. The castings were rough but nothing a bit of patience and elbow grease couldn't remedy. It cuts very well and I can only imagine how much better the original would be. I love planes and appreciate the time you spend explaining their use and adjustment. God bless.

    Hi. The blade if you look at it carefully, it has a relief edge this is for a purpose. The blade is designed to protrude ever so slightly out side of face. This cuts the wall of the rebate. Cheers Robin Alexander

    @@mitchwoodwork you would think so, but it doesn't. My 78 is 120 years old, my user, hammer adjustment for blade. Again like all cool woodworking tools you need to play with it to get use to gauging the right amount of hang out. Just shy of a mill. If you set plane blade up as I have wrote you will see the side tip protruding just a fraction more, this makes the rebate you are planning more precise. Cheers Robin Alexander

    Great informational video, I just purchased one just like that, tried to get a good deal, but good deals were fixer upper plane, parts only type. I finally got me one in excellent shape. I'm currently trying to put together a hands only ( no power tools ) carpenters tool box. ( I was glad to been given my wife's grandfather tool box, a real gem, but tools have been gone out of it for years,bummer!) I had some I have used over the years but now I am getting into it more, I guess I'm thinking of my own grandchildren. I'm am also setting up a small blacksmith shop, as I have done a little of that years ago. I am preparing these two trades as I am wanting to learn more about both, and hope to be able to retire in 5 more years ( 67 then). But with that being said, tools are getting harder to find and at decent prices! You guys provide us with such good advice on the technics of using these tools and is deeply appreciated. Oh yeah, I must be watching to many videos as the wife had to take me to the doctor yesterday as I had a horrible pain in my back and hip! Could not stand up or walk without a cane, found out I have an inflamed sciatica nerve. Now I got a bum left shoulder and back! He put me on meds and told me to watch my favorite channels on youtube, well I added that last part. LOL. Well enough about me, I hope all is well with you, Take care!

    Hi Luther. I just stumbled onto your comment and noticed you had, as of a year ago, a sciatic nerve issue. Don't know if your all better or not but I'll throw this out anyway. I have two blown discs in my back and lost the feeling in both legs except for a pain like someone was driving a nail into each kneecap. After years of doctors I my family doc got me a thing called a Tens Unit. It was a little battery operated thing that had two contracts that glued on my leg and the middle of my back. It had a little dial and I would turn it up until I could feel the current and then back it off just slightly. The pain would be gone! I wore it for about a month and a half and the pain stayed gone after that. I still can screw up my back and do every once in a while but I never get that particular pain at all. I went 6 years before I found that out and wished I had known a lot sooner.

    Its excellent tool. Got it from workplace, from some old tool box that had been sitting there for decades by bloke who is probably at this point dead and buried, had just left to tool box there when retiring and it was not even tools of the trade, so current workers said i could have it. Only missing the fence and now i see i'm missing the thumb screw of the debt stop. For some reason the tool box had 3 screws for the blade and i was about to use some force to screw that on the debt stop screw hole, but stopped to look what ever that actually belong there, since it didnt screw easily by hand like others. Gotta search right replacement it seems, or manufacture one, though not that i even use the debt gauge much, just like to prevent it going missing.

    Just bought my 4th #78. The first one only had the casting, a beading cutter, the knicker, and the blade clamp. The second had the blade and the clamp. The third had just the guide and rod. Back after a year. I finally fixed up one of the other rebate planes. Turns out I have three different brands. Stanley, Millers Falls, and Sargent. The Stanley was the one with almost all the parts. Looking at yours I'm discovering that the depth stop isn't held with a flat bladed thumb screw. It is held with a round headed knurled screwcwith a straight bit slot. Chris Anderson is casting more depth stops and I'm going to make some screws to fit. Now it will be a lot easier. Thanks Mitch.

  • @roonzacar7276
    @roonzacar72768 жыл бұрын

    Mitch one of the reasons I don't use my 78 as much as I could is workholding when using this plane. I don't have a tail vice so do you have any ideas about how to hold small pieces when using this sort of plane? I make small boxes and the small box ends are difficult to hold when using this type of plane. Typically a box might have ends measuring 3 inches by 2 inches. Not much surface area to clamp, and if you don't get much purchase on it the workpiece moves resulting in a ruined rebate. Added to that, you are cutting across the grain for the box ends so you need a very secure way of holding it down.

  • @mitchwoodwork

    @mitchwoodwork

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Roonza Car I hope I understand what your trying to do, if not then email me a photo. I would lay the box end flat on the bench, reference edge aligned with bench edge, then surround the other edges with pieces of sheet ply (thinner than the box end) clamped to the bench. You should be able to prevent the box end from moving that way. If you make many the same size, prepare a snug fit cutout in a piece of ply.

  • @roonzacar7276

    @roonzacar7276

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Thanks Mitch I think you've understood my issue. With small box ends it can be difficult to clamp them down without the clamps getting in the way of the rebate plane. The smallness of the box ends make them difficult to clamp down, I will give your method a go and see if the workpiece remains secure. Thanks again for your prompt reply.

    @@mitchwoodwork Hi Mitch, I know this video was years ago, but I'm realizing that none of the no 78's on the market have square fences. I know you refurbish planes very well so I was gonna ask you whether you know how to square the fences of these planes to their soles?

  • @mitchwoodwork

    @mitchwoodwork

    @@kaaona123 it's not something I do, relying on even shavings being taken and squareness of the sole to the side. Using the fence just to start a rebate at the right position. I'm not sure the fence is really deep enough to hold the plane square, but you could file it if you want to try. If you do, let me know how you get on.

    Arnold Espenberg Oh dear, that's unfortunate. I can only suggest searching eBay, craigslist, etc. I believe parts are still available from Stanley, but you'll end up paying quite a bit I suspect. If you know a metal worker, they could probably make a fence in very little time, and adapt a donor blade to fit, even make a lever cap.

    Good day MIW, I just bought my 2nd 2nd-hand Stanley 78 and I am curious how old they are. Is there a way to date these? One of them has "X20" just behind the front part. The other has "01" on that spot. The "01" looks the oldest. But, as it has almost never been used, looks great! The blade hasn't even been hand sharpened yet :-) I expect to be having a lot of fun with that one.

    i don't know if i may be of use to you or your viewers but i just started making reproduction of the depth stop . also many of the clones of this plane the the stops alignment groove on the other side of the screw hole (proprietary stuff so you'd have to get parts from them i suppose) i can make throws as well. there's a lot of them missing and i hate to see good tools go unused . if its ok can i add a link to my listing? ill give every one a discount that comes from here.

    Vee grooves, wide dados, fit tenons, move iron to front bed to use as a bull nose plane. You can use it like a block or bench plane in many respects too. It's quite the versatile beast, so always consider it if your other planes don't fit the bill.

    No, the 45 and 55 are no replacement for bench planes or shoulder planes, and their rebate performance is no match for the 78. There is no plane I know of that can do everything, let alone do everything well.

  • @mitchwoodwork

    @mitchwoodwork

    Paolo Mh That's fine, it's the cutting angle (final bevel angle) I was talking about, doesn't matter how you get there. A honing jig can be used, but because of the shaped iron, you need to pack out the side with the cutout.

    No depth stop or nicker on the left side. #78 is absurdly cheap right now. You can buy the complete setup for about $50 on ebay. It's a very well made and very versatile tool. Way underpriced

    FYI I stopped your video 15 seconds in because of the poor sound quality, although I did fast forward to see if it improved later on. It's actually painful listening to a camera mounted mic in a 'live' room. Sort out some sort of close micing like a lavalier or wireless, and your videos will be so much better.
