As one of the original founders of the Viennese Ball, I have to say you have come a long way from that first night in Toyan. The opening choreography rivals what I experienced at the Opera and Concordia Balls in Vienna. Well done!

I’m just a random guy from the USA, and I have questions: 1.) What country is this happening in? Singapore? (Guessing) 2.) Why is the East doing Western culture better, more seriously, and more frequently than the West does? Any good hypothesis?

@@wusundowma This is happening in the San Francisco Bay Area. The dancers are predominantly American of diverse ethnic backgrounds, though we also had several international students on the committee from all over the world. I would like to gently suggest that a diverse set of individuals, including many immigrants, coming together as part of a syncretic cultural celebration, is perhaps as serious a "doing" of American culture as anything.

My compliments on the execution of very difficult ballet choreography. The highlight for me was the big ending with a cascading flip followed by a unison flip. These young people must be in incredible physical shape to maintain that level of intensity for over seven minutes. Please keep dancing throughout your lives. And thank you for sharing this.

Everything about this is magnificent! The choreography, the gowns and tuxes, the performance - and the cheers of the student crowd. Imagine cheers for artistry rather than athletic teams! And you really hear the Tchaikovsky for the music because you are not concentrating so on the ballet itself. The waltz, even so sophisticated a performance, can be done by college students who are talented and chosen carefully. I love it!

The waltz is not only beautiful to watch, it feels amazing (for a woman anyway) because the heavy skirt will swirl with you, as you are turning around and around and moving in a circle in a man's arms. How can it get better than this? Even if you have two left feet, you will feel transported and light as a feather. I strongly suspect the men like it too :>

Hi! So as one of the dancers sitting off to the right, I can! For both the polka and the waltz, there are two alternate couples. These couples learn the entire choreography and dance during rehearsals whenever someone's partner is absent. The role of the alternate is to be able to step in and dance in any position of the choreography in case one of the dancers is injured or can not perform.

Great athleticism from this year's dancers in this choreography. But using ballet music from Swan Lake (even if the composer says it is a waltz) instead of a traditional waltz from Vienna is a trend I hope Stanford gets over. Oh yes, I did catch that "special" couple but I'm not pointing them out, just noting it.

What is so cool about the group is that a majority of members actually know how to and do dance both roles often! If anything, I've found that developing both skill sets has helped me grow as a dancer-- both for becoming more musically cognizant of phrasing and styling, as well as adapting to and (and more importantly, in my opinion) dancing for my partner. @@alexisivec5831 okay, then it was really good :) you know: female leads are still a "oh noes!!!" in europe at major events and the debutant female+female couple at the original vienna opera ball in 2020 was criticized. not for being bad in performance (you had to watch closely to spot the 21y woman in white tie among the 288 debutants) but just out of principle by the traditionalists. just my guess: even if Vienna is now cool with the idea (if the female lead is good), they would not allow the other option of 2 men.

Hi, we are alternates. Since our choreographies are very position-oriented, we have 16 couples on the floors, and 2 couples as alternates for each dance. Alternates learn the choreography from all positions in case there is an illness/injury that prevents someone from dancing in the final performance. What seems "weird" to you is actually crucial in our ability to present you this choreography. Cheers from Josefstadt
