Of all of the Stephen King books that have been made into movies (some great, some good, and some really horrible), the three that stand out as the best, to me, are (The Body) Stand By Me, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. I’m glad you finally got around to seeing this one.

The Body and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (note that there is no "the" in that title) are stories in the same book -- Different Seasons -- along with Apt Pupil (which was made into a movie) and The Breathing Method (which was not).

There is no plot twist in the movie. If you think him announcing that Chris died is a plot twist, you should look at the newspaper adult Gordie is reading in the beginning.

It’s a coming of age movie where a group of boys come together & go on an adventure. During the adventure they learn from each other & teach each other real life lessons & grow from the experiences. It’s a tale as old as time. My friends & I biked everywhere growing up & doing dangerous & stupid stuff during the summers. Any young boys could relate to this, but probably not as much today sadly.

Pretty much... while we didnt go looking for a dead body or had psycho bullies, life for me and the other neighborhood boys in the 80's could relate to this movie (that leech part in particular lol) and the Goonies. This is a pretty accurate and id say timeless look at how a group of boys that age act, think and talk amongst themselves. Granted... as you say, might be different now days. Was still the same in the 90's as a teen, but I still think the inner mind of a young man hasnt changed much for 1000 years lol.

Six years later, River Phoenix (Chris Chambers) would die. I think I recall it was a drug overdose. From a talented family, Chris' brother Joaquin became a superstar actor in such films as Gladiator (2000), brilliantly playing the villain and the lead role of real life singer, Johnny Cash in Walk the Line (2004) for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Watching this film, Stand by Me, after River Phoenix's death can be a very emotional experience, especially if watched in late summer around Labor Day. 😶

Launched the careers of a few young actors in this movie. Joachim Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Cory Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland. Another movie along these same lines is The Outsiders with very young actors Tom Cruse, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Esteves, Ralph Macchio, and Dianne Lane. Great movie. Recommend you watch.

Joaquin Phoenix who won an Oscar for the Joker mentioned his late brother River(Chris in the movie) in his speech. The boy who turned out to become a writer(Will Wheaton) ended up on the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. His older self played by Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss famous for JAWS and The Goodbye Girl. Vern(Jerry O'Connell) does a talk show called The Talk and films like the remake of Pirahna. Ace(Kiefer Sutherland) has been in many tv shows and films and his dad is actor Donald Sutherland who plays President Snow in The Hunger Games films. The brother who died is played by film actor John Cusack who did films like Identity, Grosse Point Blank, and Serendipity . Teddy(Corey Feldman) was in films like The Goonies and Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter

I remember back in 2008 I took Film Education as an elective cause everyone in school said you get to watch movies for assignments. To my surprise this was the first film our teacher presented to us and after watching it our class grew closer as the years went on. Eventually we all graduated moved to highschool still anytime we saw each other we'd quote this film or simply take the time to talk about what was going on at home before class. It wasn't just some social hierarchy where you were left out we saw each other as human beings and I will always love this film for teaching us that at a young age. 🧠

Great reaction video about a really good and deep movie. Sadly River Phoenix just as his character (Chris) passed away far to young (23) in a drugoverdose back in -93. You girls should really watch his best perfomance. Its in a indiemovie called "My Own Private Idaho" directed by Gus Van Sant. There hes playing against one of his best friends, Keanu Reeves!

Lia & Ellie All of these kids actors are still acting today except River Phoenix who died at the age of 23 in 1993. Will Wheaton aka Gordie also starred as Wesley Crusher of Star Trek: Next Generation. Corey Feldman aka Teddy has been in movies from the Goonies and Lost Boys with Kiefer Sutherland aka Ace. Jerry O'Connell aka Vern has also been in a lot of movies too. Phoenix had possible stellar career before his sudden death. Phoenix played young Indiana Jones of the movie, Indiana Jones and Last Crusade.

In the book, Gordie tells us that Vern tragically died in a house fire that occurred at a party in 1966, six years after the story's events. Teddy died in a car accident near Harlow, Maine in 1971 or 1972, making DuChamp around 23 years old at the time of his death. Chris of course dies after being stabbed after trying to break up a fight.

Tedd my died in a car accident in high school and Verne died in a fire when he went to college. He also sees Ace once as an adult when Ace is fat and bald.

For me an American generation x this movie was truly the movie about our youth rightfully depicting the way it was and how close boys are as friends that had a lot of influence on us. Even though this takes place in our fathers generation we grew up pretty much the same way. This is such a rite of passage boy movie. It doesn't get the Acclaim that it should. From our generation as a boy this movie is only behind top gun as far as influencing my generation as a young boy.
