Stand by me is by far my favorite S King adaptation. The scariest is The Shining. Took me a couple of times to get through the whole movie. The best novel I read by him is Salem’s Lot. Scared the crap out of me but I look forward to the new film coming out next year. Hope you’ll watch The Lost Boys and Goonies if you haven’t already! 😃

The stand. Also a great movie although it's like the original IT movie, it's put into a mini series.

Rest in peace, River Phoenix. He was such a phenomenal actor at such a young age, and the scene where Chris breaks down after confessing the story of the Milk Money to Gordie always makes me sob. 💔 He left us far too soon.

Its so upsetting to hear Joaquin Phoenix's 911 call about River passing away.

Between the real life parallels (River Phoenix dying young, Wil Wheaton became a writer, Feldman being abused to the point he has obvious PTSD from it all) and finding out Wil Wheaton wasn't really acting when Gordie has his "why doesn't he love me" breakdown makes this a hard re-watch at times for me. I'm glad younger generations are getting to see it, but yeah.

Jerry O'Connell has done pretty well in his own right but most people remember him from Sliders and forget he played Vern. He had the most normal life of these child stars, I think.

Jerry O'Connell kind of lucked out the most.

Based on the short story The Body by Stephen King, it's now considered to be one of the greatest coming of age movies ever made.

My dad went to high school with Kiefer Sutherland, and said when we watched this movie together, “I always laugh when he plays these kinds of bully characters because he was always so chill and a nice guy”

River Phoenix(Chris) was Joaquin Phoenix's older brother. River was such a talented and kind person. He was huge in Hollywood even though he could of cared less about being famous. Sadly he developed an addiction to drugs, and on Halloween night 1993 died of an overdose outside of a club that Johnny Depp owned, called The Viper Room. River was only 23. River didn't want to go out that night, but Joaquin did, and River didn't want to let his little brother down. Joaquin and one of their sisters, Rain, sadly were forced to watch him die while they waited for help to arrive. Joaquin even made the 911 phone call, which was horrifically aired everywhere after River's death. The call to 911 was too late to save River though at that point.

These kids were amazing actors, and this movie never fails to make an impression. Also, Kiefer Sutherland always makes a great villain. He was good in The Lost Boys, too.

the line “i never had any friends later on like the ones i had when i was 12, jesus does anyone?” never fails to me make cry. i also watched this for the first time last year with my mum who actually started the film just after the opening scene so i had absolutely no clue that chris was going to die at the end aside from just vibes and knowing the story telling techniques that king uses in his dramas so i was sure chris would die i just didn’t actually know so when gordie finally says how he does after finally getting out i broke down and the movie instantly became one of my all time favourite comfort films, it’s just so fantastic

Every time I watch Stand By Me I'm just reminded how talented River Phoenix was. Growing up I only knew River because of how he died and at such a young age. But at some point I tumbled upon Stand By Me and loved it. I continued to find and watch pretty much everything River was in. 2 other stand out roles for me were his performance in Running On Empty (which he was nominated for an Oscar for) and My Own Private Idaho with Keanu Reeves. Such a talented young man taken too soon.

You were right about the castor oil making the kid throw up. But the egg was so he wouldn't do it right away. They're old school remedies for upset stomachs. Usually, it only takes a spoonful or two to make you vomit, so the whole bottle was major overkill. While swallowing a whole raw egg will keep you from throwing up. He used the egg as a kind of time-release device.

Every time I see this movie I just get so sad that we lost River Phoenix. He was well on his way to being a legendary actor. He was around my age (maybe a year older) and it just broke me a little when he died. The line at the end about how you never have friends again like the ones you had at twelve years old always hit me pretty hard. In my case at least, it's very true.

I've always personally enjoyed Stephen King's non-horror work more than his horror. But I do enjoy both, his movies are always a good time.

I'm reading his new fantasy that just came out last week right now. Loving it so far. I think a lot of people dismiss what a truly fantastic writer he is because his primary genre is horror.

Love this movie! River Phoenix was already such a great actor and died way too soon. 💕 I know it's been recommended but you should check out The Outsiders (1983) if you haven't seen it. I prefer the director's cut "The Complete Novel" version but there's a theatrical version too. It's similar to this movie in a way.

oh my- You're an Outsiders fan too?! It's so rare to find them these days. Sorry, i always get excited when i see someone who likes The Outsiders. I've loved it since i was 12 (24yrs ago) As much as i would LOVE these guys to react to it, i do feel like you need to read the book first to fully understand the whole story. The movie is amazing (especially the directors cut) but there's still a bit missing

yay more outsiders fans!!! we need more of us lol i remember the first time i read the book in 7th grade. it wasn't assigned to our class but our teacher let me borrow and read from her copy when i finished my work early. i remember finishing the last pages and having to leave that class and go to PE, walking to the locker room in just this kind of daze. i never knew a book could make you feel like that, that fictional characters could have that kind of impact. i'll always treasure the book more for that reason but the movie is excellent too!!

I love that they kept waiting for a Stephen King twist, when really, it's just a beautiful coming of age movie. My favorite of all time.

The was a "Stephen King twist" to the story: Ray Brower, in the middle of nowhere, didn't see, or hear, a train coming at him? He did...that's the part of the story, no one really asks about. Why was Ray on the tracks to get hit? He wasn't picking berries deaf and blind. King is subtle....

This movie is a drama, but in Castle Rock the series, the characters and the location from this film becomes a part of horror series like sort of Stephen King Universe.

I love that you guys picked this film (one of my all time favorites). Some backstory on the casting, Rob Reiner specifically chose these actors for these roles because they had each perfectly embodied the characters they were playing in real life. Wil Wheaton has gone on record many times in recent years about how abusive and neglectful his real parents have been throughout his life. He is very self conscious and has suffered from anxiety and depression for most of his life. Playing Gordie was very easy for him because he was basically just playing a different version of himself. He said one day he went to director Rob Reiner, told him that Feldman was an asshole and asked him why he had cast? Reiner replied: "that's exactly why I casted him. I liked him better in "Rosenkranz & Guildenstern Are Dead".

I’ve seen River Phoenix’s character tell the story about the money and the teacher at least a dozen times, and it still gives me actual physical pain in my heart each time. It’s so sad and unfair. 💔

His books can straddle the line between thrilling and horror. He also tends to use kids because they’re more vulnerable than adults and more susceptible to fear. So when you’re getting that POV in a book or movie you can’t help but also feel vulnerable as you’re experiencing the story.

Please react to the movie MY GIRL from 1991. It has Dan Aykroyd, Macaulay Culkin, Jamie Lee Curtis. Would love to see your take on it, because it's such an iconic movie!!!

Stand By Me has been my favorite movie since it came out (I was six). I am so stoked you’re doing this! Can’t wait. ❤️

More time has passed since the release of this movie (1986) than had passed between the events during the movie (1959) and the narrator reflecting on those events (1985).

This is one of my favorite films of all time, both for nostalgic reasons and emotional impact. I grew up with it because of my mom, she saw it as a kid herself. I think I was about 9 the first time I saw it. My childhood best friend and I were just slightly older than the kids in the movie when we met, and she was immediately the Chris to my Gordie for over a decade. My biggest cheerleader in life. She died last year of a drug overdose at 26. So, this movie knows how to evoke both my best memories and my worst. It’s so powerful and even though it is a well known movie, I feel like people still don’t talk about it enough for how good it really is.

I used to love this movie when I was a kid. River Phoenix is so great in this, he was such a great actor. And it's fun to see what Jack Bauer was up to in his youth XD

I’m so glad you watched this. It really is a classic coming of age story. The actors are incredible and I think both boys and girls can relate to that pre teen group of friends and all the shenanigans we were up to. Corey Feldman (Teddy), who you also saw in the Goonies is in The Lost Boys along with Kiefer Sutherland (Ace). Another 80’s classic. A much watch! 😃

Every Stephen King movie that aired on tv in the 80s and 90s was an event! Especially the ones that got turned into mini series. But I think I remember this the best. I was in 3rd grade when I watched this and all the kids and I couldn’t stop talking about it the next Monday at school.

River Phoenix was a superb actor. He was outstanding in two 1988 movies when he was about 17. "Little Nikita" had some script problems, but Sidney Poitier and Riv turned in excellent work. "Running On Empty" is great all around and a real tear-jerker. You should review them. Apparently, Riv became a hardcore druggie while filming "My Own Private Idaho" because the director required everyone to go Method. That's another subject. The other three "buddies" in this film had longer careers. All of them were prodigies.

Speaking of Poitier, Sneakers is an often forgotten movie where you can just feel Phoenix is about to be huge (and I crack up every time it takes him a few seconds to do something dangerous and complains "it's not easy what I just did!") and it wasn't too much after he was gone.

This has great memories for me. I still remember my mom buying it and saying it was a great mom that she loved from her when she was a teenager.

The junkyard scene where Cory Feldman is defending his dad’s honor never hit me super hard as a kid, but now it’s so powerful every time

I watch quite a bit of people that react to movies. And, you guys hit the nail on the head. I am like finally someone gets it. Characters make the story. I think what is missing today is discipline and the actual art of acting. Today it is more about a painting, how cool they can make something look with their computers. And, to me, that has been watching movies since I was born 45 years ago. I watch to see the actors and actresses I really don't care about the props beside them. But that is me. I can watch a play with no costumes, and no set, and if the actors and actresses have discipline in the art, they will sell me. Nobody knows how to cry on film anymore, unless I have missed it somewhere. The discipline of frowning while you cry. If you go back to when any of these kids were crying, look at their lips. That is what sells it. If the lips curve down like a frown, that sells a sad cry. If their lips curve upward that is a smile, and smile does not go with a sad cry. A lot of the times when you see actors and actresses cry today, not only do the lips curve up, it really looks like they are either smiling or laughing. I stopped watching movies a few years ago, because I just find them boring. Mainly because the focus is more on what it looks like, or what the message or plot is, but lacks any real character depth or discipline. And it almost seems like everyone plays the same character anymore. You can make up the wildest craziest story that is unbelievable, but have the right characters, and have disciplined actors and actresses that have character themselves play the part.

You guys are going to have fun with Stranger Things whenever you watch it, it's like a love letter to the 80s. Stand By Me was a big influence on the show, along with The Goonies, ET, Poltergeist, Alien, Jaws, The Thing, Halloween, Freaks and Geeks, and a lot of others.

@@tempsitch5632 There's a lot of parallels in terms of the characters, especially at the beginning of the show. Nancy is similar to Lindsay in that they are conflicted about their new "cool" friends, Barb is her nerdy friend (Millie), Mike is her younger brother and "leader" of his friend group (Sam). Both shows are set in the 80s. Also, Matt Duffer (one of the Stranger Things creators) said: "OK, television now is becoming more cinematic. Can you do a show where you care about the characters just as much as Freaks And Geeks or Friday Night Lights, but can there also please be a monster in it?' So that was a goal with it. I just hadn’t seen enough of that on TV."

River Phoenix RIP. As a kid he was my favourite actor. He was Indians Jones too, then he died at jonny depps night club from a drug overdose, I was shattered.

The director Rob Reiner said that when Steven King viewed the movie Stand By Me, adapted from his short story The Body. That King suddenly got up and left the room without a word. Steven King is notorious throughout Hollywood for telling directors of movies based on his stories exactly what he thinks about them. Good or bad. Reiner said that when King returned that he was visibly moved and proclaimed that this adaptation to his story was the best he'd ever seen. And said that he loved it. The story is quite dear to Steven King because it's partly autobiographical. He based the character Gordy on himself when he was that age. And the character Chris Chambers was based on Kings best friend who did actually die too young. RIP River Phoenix. He was a great actor that we were cheated out of way too soon.

I cried in the theatre in 1988. I, too, had once buried a trove of pennies at age 10 and could not relocate them. Plus much more. A great view of a stage of life.

Interesting fact about this movie this movie is based off of the story called The body written by Stephen King and the story itself is based around Stephen King's life. So Gordy is actually Stephen King and in an interview Stephen King even said this and even said that even to this day he still has a scar from that leech. Another interesting fact about it at the end where Ace and his gang said they would get them back , that's in the beginning of the school year aces gang caught up with them and actually beat them half to death in the hallway.

An absolutely quintessential coming of age story. Great soundtrack. Perfect time period to set it, and amazing VO narration. So good!

I was so happy to see you guys reacting to this! I love your channel, your reactions, and how invested and animated you both are. You can tell that you both are really knowledgeable as well about the film word, and what you’re reacting to! I think the staying power of Stephen King, and why his stories are so popular is he always includes the human condition. Demon clowns, undead cats, witches curses and man eating dogs are all horrifying. What’s worse though us grief, depression, loss, abuse, addiction, fear, hurt…..and all his stories use monsters and horrible moments to convey to true evils and hurts of this world. Also, I lost my own brother 5 years ago to a work accident, and people can be really uncomfortable with loss and what to say. For myself though, I like to talk about Tommy and his life, it’s a lot better than when people pretend like he didn’t exist.

I have been waiting for you all to react to this movie. Stand By Me is one of my most favorite movies ever. I saw it in the theater back in the day and more times than I can count since via vhs, dvd, and streaming. Reaction channels are so great because it allows you to experience something you love through someone else's eyes and enjoy it again. You all are so great at this and I hope your channel grows and grows. Thanks for the fun.

This is one of those movies that you get more out of it every time you see it. The character development and consistency is so good for each of the kids. I agree, awesome acting, so natural.

Actor Jerry O’Connell played Verne (he was in scream 2, played the boyfriend). River Phoenix who played Chris is Joaquin Phoenix’s brother (died too soon)! Phenomenal actor. This movie came out when I was a teenager, loved it.

omg! Yes! You have no idea how fast i clicked when i saw this as soon as i woke up! Watching with my sleep-filled eyes and morning cup of tea, still in my dressing gown coz it's my day off XD My absolute all-time fav movie EVER! It makes me cry every single time i watch it and i've seen it hundreds of times. I made my kid watch it last year and, as much as they complained about watching an "old" movie", they ended up absolutely loving it too!

He is a great actor in Lost Boys, Disney Three Musketeers, Young Guns 1 and 2. John Cusack plays the brother of the narrator. He is in Say Anything, Identity and another Stephen King movie 1408 that takes place in a Hotel.

'Stand By Me' is just such a classic beautiful relatable story, it never gets old and I always cry by the end when I think how sadly Chris Chambers end mirrors River Phoenix dying too soon 😭 there's this 1995 movie 'Now and Then' that has a very similar story of growing up over the course of a summer/"journey to find something and growing along the way because of the experience", it's a bit like the "girl's version" of Stand By Me, except the older version of the women are meeting up again and thinking back to that summer that changed everything. It's a great movie, starring Christina Ricci (aka. Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family 😂)

I'm 49 and saw this around 10. Girls really related to this story at the time. I had my first crush on River Phoenix.

A few interesting facts: The song the kids were singing was the theme song to an old TV series that was on during the late 50’s through the early 60’s called Have Gun Will Travel. Also, River Phoenix who played Chris is Joaquin Phoenix brother. He played Commodus in Gladiator and Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. He’s a very good actor but a very strange human. River, though his career was cut short, was a very good actor and I believe could have done great things. He and Cory Feldman, who played Teddy Duchamp, both had drug issues. Luckily Corey came out of it alive. Also, Jerry O’Connell who played Vern, grew up to be very hot.

Some additional great King based works are “Green Mile” & “Shawshank Redemption”

This has always been one of my favorite movies. Such great acting I always get choked up no matter how many times I’ve seen it!

This is my all time childhood favourite movie. The naturalistic acting really carries the movie and this director is known for getting great performances put of actors.

There's a couple not-so-well-known movies i think you guys would like - The War: ft. a young Elijah Wood and Kevin Costner as his dad who has returned from a mental hospital after being in vietnam. But the story mostly follows Elijah, his sister and their friends and the struggles of growing up - it has some real funny moments, and some really moving moments too. - Toy Soldiers: (not the one about the toys that come to life) ft. Will Wheaton and Sean Astin. A group of dangerous, armed drug traffickers take over a boys boarding school and a group of trouble-makers decide it's down to them to fight back.

Everyone always goes on about River, Wil and Corey's success but Vern went on to date Sidney Prescott in college and is currently married to present day Mystic.

This movie is so AWESOME!! And well acted.

This movie along with My Girl are up near the top of my all time favourite movies.

The last lines Dreyfus types ring so true that it's heartbreaking

Most viewers of this movie, don't seem to wonder, "why was Ray Brower on those tracks, alone, in the woods miles from anywhere, and never saw a train coming at him"? The guys sure saw it running on the bridge..... Sure, the story that came out was "he was picking berries", but when you can see Gordie was actually fixated on finding The Body, death, and his own guilt at being alive, instead of his brother, you can see what really happened to Ray Brower, for whatever reason he chose, to be on those tracks.....That's the real horror in this story. King always delivers.

This movie always hits hard.

This story reminds me a lot of the Ray Bradbury book Farewell Summer which brings up the same theme of the last summer as a kid, but without being quite so dark. A wonderful book, though, and the predecessor Dandelion Wine is also so feel good.

Why I think so many people love this movie is it evokes a time for all of us where you even though you don't know it, you're childhood is over. That last summer of innocence before that crushing reality of life sets in

The kid whose older brother died is Will Wheaton who did youtube too with tabletop on geek and sundry this movie was really interesting and the way the corpse was made, said by a mortician was quite accurate to what happens to a real body in that stage of decomposition. Movie was shot well and not to exagerated in anyway.

When he was a kid, Stephen King saw his friend get killed by a train when they were out playing together. He's said he doesn't really remember it, just hearing the accounts of his parents when he came back home stunned and confused.

@@whitenoisereacts Stand by Me is probably Kings most directly person work. All of his stories have pieces of him in them, as with any writer, but the character of Gordie shares a lot of qualities with himself, as do the other characters. Stephen King's father was in WW2, which I imagine had an influence on how he wrote Teddy, and the time period itself of 1959 is the year he was 12, the year he was their age. There a certain intimacy and detailed nature to this movie and it's characters that make it feel so personal, in part because it is, but also it has an incredibly universal nature that almost anyone can connect with. I don't think most people have ever gone looking for a dead body, but we all can identify with the coming of age feeling and the tragic beauty of childhood that it entails. The kids all have their own trauma, their own story, but we can connect with them all in a sort of singular way and feeling, and to me that's the beauty of this film. It captures a specific emotion, a nostalgia, perfectly

Question for you guys......have you ever seen/reacted to the movie White Noise from 2005 starring Michael Keaton? Cause that movie will give you goosebumps

FUN FACT: Remember the scene where the guys trespass in Milo's junkyard and Chris and Gordy race and Chris beats Gordy?? In real life, Wil Wheaton (Gordy) was faster than River Phoenix (Chris). I also find it ironic that Chris is the only member of the crew that dies in the end and that in real life Jerry O'Connell (Vern), Wil Wheaton (Gordy), and Corey Feldman (Teddy) are also the only surviving members of their group. Rest peacefully, River.

This is one of the best classics ever

Hardly anyone gets the beginning, he's reading about Chris dying in the fast food restaurant, and that inspires him to tell the story, which Chris said he would

Yes. It's a magic trick almost like the one in that other famous movie that has a surprising ending, where you realize after the reveal at the end that you were given all the relevant information right from the beginning.

Fun little fact! This was shot in a little town called Brownsville, Oregon. I lived there for a bit with my grandparents and they still live there! I go there often to visit them and most of the buildings look the same and it’s honestly kind of a scary town especially at night lol. But yeah it’s just kind of cool to walk in town where a movie was filmed! When I watched the movie I was shocked that I saw the green bridge because it’s still there! Looks a little rusty thoughh. Brownsville has so much history.

That was a really great reaction,guys.this has been one of my favorite movies ever since I was 12 myself.its mind blowing that this was river Phoenix's first major role and,in my opinion,his best

It's so bittersweet to watch this film and see River Phoenix as Chris again, especially given his younger brother Joaquin Phoenix's acting success over more recent years (Walk the Line, Joker, etc.). I truly think River would have been just as hugely successful, he was so talented from such a young age, as you see by his mature performance in this film. It would have been wonderful to see where his career would have gone. 23 years old is way way too young to go. 😔

River Phoenix kills it in this and his character is one of my all time favorites. Everyone should care about the people around them the way Chris does
