Always Board Never Boring recently received a review copy of Stalagbite! This is a really fun, family-friendly dungeoncrawling board game, packed with enjoyable game mechanisms and featuring a cosy, nostalgic aesthetic. In this video review, ABNB runs through a lot of the rules, and shares his thoughts on what he likes (a lot) and what he doesn't (not a lot).
It's a long video, so these time stamps might be useful:

For a dungeon crawler, it's about as far removed from the sprawl of a game like Shadows of Brimstone as it's possible to get!

I like their miniatures, this game looks fun and those dice mechanics are so close to how combat works in my homebrew system that you could throw the Stalagbite monsters straight in using the dice from the boardgame. I think I'll be buying this at some point!

It's a fun little combat system that doesn't get in the way of the main focus of exploring. The game is thought out and balanced very well.

That looks really cute! It looks like a lot of fun! If I were to add anything, it would be; name your dwarf! I'd go with something punny, like Bor Rockbiter! 😅

There is a little campaign sheet in the rules you can photocopy and a space to record your dwarf details, so definitely room for some bad pun names.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring oh! Sidenote; my friend accidently broke the Unmatched Tales to Amaze with The Marvel Black Panther... Evidently his special ability allows him to store the enemies cards and use them for his Boost Value. If he steals the "Hoax" or "Deception" card in this way, the boss has no ability to recycle his small deck, and ends up killing himself! Woops!

This is a really good one with families. It's got some healthy competition, but you do still have to help each other when the going gets tough. My daughter (13) loves it too. I was quite relieved to have a game I like that didn't come with miniatures to paint, but I am now thinking maybe I want the official miniatures after all...

I can't recall the last time I saw you loving a game in review, where there were very few and only small niggles, with the verdict being an overwhelming endorsement. One game I will be adding to our collection then, just need to decide upon meeples or minis 😊

This one just connected so perfectly with everything I love about games. The right aesthetic, the right level of silliness, an excellent balance of complexity and accessibility, lots of crazy events but with most victories coming down to clever play more than dumb luck, good replayability, a solo mode... The list just goes on. It even does a good job of the tricky competitive co-operative game style. The rules could do with a little more polish, especially regarding goblins and goblin skulkers, but it was just a pleasure a play. I hope anybody who decides to pick it up enjoys it even half as much as I have!

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Agreed, they're a niche buy. Can't really proxy them, as they look 15mm scale? I had a look on Midlam's Website and the mini's are rather nice. Pity the floor plans aren't larger and you could proxy 28mm minis. The monsters could be 3d printed. I found a nice Stalagbite proxy Roper on 3D Cults. If your interested I could print you some out as a channel gift. Great vid by the way.

The official miniatures are on 25mm bases and around 40mm tall, which is the right scale for the boards. Thanks so much for the generous offer, but I don't want to promote anything that would take away from Midlam Miniatures. They are a small, hard-working company and if I do decide to upgrade the components I want to use their official stuff.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Good man, you've definitely helped already showcasing this great game. I didn't know anything about it. Have to grab myself a copy ( £50 plus £5 postage) Sounds pretty good to me. I would support the game by buying the game and core minis, but probably proxy the monsters myself. They're pretty resonably priced at around £3 each. This game will really shine using the available mini's.

It really is a lovely game. Totally took me by surprise. I think there is a bundle on the website that includes most of the miniatures, but it really does ramp up the price. If you already have goblins and dwarves (and who doesn't?) it's really only the monsters you need to worry about.

Thanks for the vid, looks like a great game! Any thoughts on how it may play solo? Looks like there's a fair bit of co op interaction such as rescue etc. that I'd guess wouldn't apply with just one dwarf 🤔

It’s fun solo. As I mentioned in the review it feels more daring and dangerous. You have to rely on yourself more, but it takes a lot longer for the goblin hunters to arrive. It’s better with more players, though.
