Middle-earth The Wizards Companion Review | An Excellent Accessory for the Old MECGG

Ойындар

Always Board Never Boring picked up a copy of the Middle-earth The Wizards Companion book for the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game from the 1990s. In this video he reviews that book. Sounds exciting...

I am shocked. SHOCKED to see this on the channel. Somehow I must have missed your previous MECCG video. This is my all-time favorite CCG (full disclosure: CCGs have never been my main focus in tabletop gaming.) I have two copies of this particular book and one copy of all the rest, including a third-party book full of deck lists and analysis (this was published in the ancient days before such information was so freely available online.) I have been playing with a group about once a month for... I don't know, 10 months now? We are having an absolute blast and my favorite format is multiplayer; we really do have a great time. We use large neoprene mats of middle-earth with all the site path info easy to see. There are some simplified online maps that are free and super-useful; I'll reference those as well when I get lost. We have no qualms about using print-outs of rare cards (my friends that play the Decipher Star Wars CCG do the same) and... well, we've just been having a blast. I was fortunate to get into the game many years ago before the prices went insane, so I've got a decent collection but I'm perfectly happy playing with learning decks and/or the "Challenge" decks. It's a 10 out of 10 for me. Only thing is, I never got either of the Balrog decks and those are so insanely expensive now there's no way I ever will. Honestly, it's fine. No worries. MORE MECCG CONTENT ANYTIME, PLZ. ;-) p.s. have fun at the show!

I have a bunch of the online maps for deckbuilding and playing. Really makes the difference. A neoprene mat would be nice.

Oooh! That's nice. It's good to see all the work they put into these games. It's easy to lose that context from just the cards. 😊

One of the greatest card games of all time! I still play this masterpiece. It's amazing how well it recreates the feel of a tabletop RPG in card form. Thanks for giving it some love on your channel!

I got this book some years ago when I was getting into meccg. I really do like this game. My wife and I are playing with cards from the wizards (only I think 3 cards missing for a complete Set) and the dragons set. The restricted card pool keeps the game more manageable for us and still offers an enormous amount of exploration and adventure. Thank you for just another great video.

That‘s what we like about it. One relatively small box on the shelf filled with lotr adventures. The wizards set offers us pretty much the whole package… but dragons.. and dwarfes.. its mostly about the dwarf thing. One of our decks is build around the Hobbit and another around the lotr.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring but the Dragons expansion is so cheap to buy complete sets for - Dark Minions is pretty reasonably priced too...

@@M-E_123 But I don't have any plans to expand beyond the Wizards as there is more than enough game in that one basic set for me. I can guarantee I would never get enough use out of the expansions to make it worthwhile, and I don't collect just for the sake of it.

I think the rules in this book are the same as the small rulebooks that came with the starter decks but with some extra examples and the clarifications & errata section (maybe also the example of play chapter). Everything after the rules is new to that book - and there were other books published for the game (players guides / companions) that each also included strategy articles (including discussion of popular resource and hazard strategies to help with devk building & talking about how the new expansion cards change up particular strategies / offer counter strategies to specific deck types) & scenarios for multiplayer and solo play. These other books were each themed around specific expansions and included card by card discussion/suggestion of how it impacts the game - plus new card tables summarising the new cards by region/sites playable. I think they're all worth getting if you can find cheap enough, in part for the strategy articles, but mainly for the different scenarios that help change up the way the game plays. I think the Dragons & Dark Minions books pop up now and again - later expansion books are too rare to ever be worth buying due to massively inflated prices.

Yes, from my recollections it's the first two sections that are the same as in the small books. I see some other books floating around sometimes, but for me, I am pretty much done collecting this game. I have a really good selection of cards from the basic set and a smattering of cards from other expansions, and I don't plan on doing anything more than maybe picking up an odd basic set card here and there if I see them.

I absolutely love METW. There's never been another game like it. We'll, maybe the LOTR CCG, but Middle Earth is the full experience. I'd love to see you play a game with the solo rules, or at least an overview of the solo variant.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring It's interesting since the character cards that make up your pack have twos sides. One that shows Either Human of wolf breed forms while the other side has their werewolf forms with raised stats.

It's not an easy game to dip back into. There's quite a commitment to relearning it all.
