I took the Mrs to UKGE as she wanted to get into minature painting and look at some board games. She chatted to Duncan at length (she didn't have a clue who he was) and bought his recent paint range. Then I found her watching Byron from Artis Opas do his magic (she didn't have a clue who he was either) she bought a brush set from him. We both bumped into Ross from Fauxhammer, who gave us one of his miniatures. I later explained who everyone was and showed her countless videos to instill what was possibly the best introduction to the hobby i have ever seen.

The car hire tip is the real deal. I'm an Aussie and heading over with my family for my sister's wedding in a month and hiring a car for two weeks is _so_ much cheaper than trains, even though we're mostly going to be down South. It blows my mind.

I love the idea of 'personal' cons - even if its like groups of twitch/YT personalities having something like that would be absolutely incredible. I cant imagine how quickly youd run out of space to host even up to 500 people... Even that would be a pretty intimate environment for a 1-1/2 day event

Great video as always Peachy. I was at London Comic Con the other week and walked past you, and I thought I recognised you but didn't want to say anything. A little tip for drinks at the Excel, one I only discovered last May at MCM Comic Con, there is a small shop on the lower floor of the Excel concourse, next to the carpark entrance and baggage storage. They sell drinks and water at reasonable prices, far better than what you'd pay on the concourse in the shops. For food, I always go to the Tescos just outside the Excel grounds.

But, they also have combat robots, wrestling and mental stuff. Plus, its in the dock yards, so you can go on boats and a submarine! Good for kids and grown ups alike. Went last year and loved it.

taking kids is always a gamble! Always end up spending more with the eldest, on fud as well as minis (last time was Fiasco at Leeds Armouries - good parking, food availability is poor but Leeds city centre is only a 10-15 min walk away). Took both to Vapnartak at home (York) I like it, I never go for the full day so I avoid the food ques really as home is a walk or a short car ride away. Gets packed around midday - we avoided the worst of it this year but yeah both of them with no filter no concept of keeping on the punters side of displays... needing to pee at the worst times - great fun!

Thanks Peachy for the personal overview of UK Cons. I had no idea there are so many. I have attended BerlinCon - which is mainly boardgames and card games but with a few miniatures, RPGs and Lego stands too - 5 times now and seen it grow massively over the last few years. I think even Warlord Games were there last year. On Sundays they have a Family Day in which all children up to 14 years old accompanied by an adult can attend for free. The Leipzig Book Fair in April is very popular with the Manga fans and so has massive Cos-Play participation.

I've had to work conventions like Salute and UKGE for the last 6/7 years and so not quite got the full vibe of them as a punter but I would have to say UKGE is still the best all-rounder. I really like that it caters to everyone and there's the big zone for demos and just casual play. Always something fun in the indie corner at the top of the stairs (Hall 1 to 2) - Bad Squiddo and friends are always hanging out there! I do really, really like Salute though - especially the big participation games from the various clubs. They are always SO impressive and get you excited to try something different yourself.

Great seeing you at Salute and UKGE. We like to do aparthotels for cons accommodation to help keep costs of staying over down and more money for spending on stuff! Great video. I do think for larger busier cons its a nice idea to research ahead of time and have a plan of what you want to hit up, means you can avoid the busy areas and pivot to quieter areas. This worked really well at UKGE and had very little problem moving around because of that. As much as i hate to say it, go analogue for plan and map or at least have it as a backup as connections can play up at these big cons.

Trains are ridiculous. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I caught one; I always get the coach down from Nottingham, and it usually costs about a fiver... I need to get down to some more of these; I think my last one was Salute in '22...

I enjoyed UKGE with my buddies, there wasn't quite enough wargaming on offer to tickle my fancy but the guys teaching Battletech at the Catalyst stand were mega friendly. The crowds were a nightmare, but mostly because of how slow they moved lol.

I'm really jealous of the UK, you get so many wargaming cons! here in the NLs you get the occasional tournament and a massive general boardgame con. I wish there more smaller cons for wargaming.

Fun to listen to while I've been putting together a bit of GW plastic. Back in the day, the South Wales Model Spectacular, firstly in Sofia Gardens, Cardiff, then in Bridgend, was a phenomenal event. No idea why it died a death. It involved a massive Battle of Britain remote controlled airplane display over Newbridge Fields with the RAF having to defend a Luftwaffe attack - huge explosions and smoke and massive fun. The other thing it did was train sets, which were incredible, and then I got into looking at military models and after some exposure to WFB 3rd edition our club put on a demo game. We had an all comers evil vs good battle, in which my Minotaur proved, as one might expect, to fluff the rolls. Hope to hear more about Peach fest. Oh yes, that's what I also meant to say - Herts of Lard. That was a fabulous day out in Rickmansworth just outside London off the M25. Amazing day out for only a tenner. Participation games though also no selling - perhaps as you say because it was based in a school. I played a part in a phenomenally fun game of the Lardies 18/19th century system, adapted to involve a frigate assault on an island.

Great video. Don't miss out on the small local events all over the UK. Way cheaper than the big events and not necessarily second class. Diceni at Norwich is great and Hereward at Peterborough gets a shout for anyone in the East Midlands or East Anglia.

I believe the train price situation is 1 the greed of the companies and wanting to increase the profit margin and 2 the overheads and consumables associated with keeping a train staffed and maintained. Whereas hiring a little 1.2 corsa is much less of a logistical nightmare 😂
