At 30 years of age, Will Still became the youngest manager in Europe’s top five leagues when he replaced Óscar García at Reims in Ligue 1 at the end of 2022. He has had a remarkable rise to the top, and here, he tells The Coaches’ Voice his story.
Still, an Englishman who was born and raised in Belgium, made the decision that coaching was what he wanted to do following a period at Preston North End. After returning to Belgium to look for work, he went knocking on doors of Belgian football coaches to try and get himself a job. Eventually, his approach paid off.
As a child, Still was always fascinated by the intricacies of football tactics, and he used to test himself on Football Manager, which he admits he became “obsessed” with. Incredibly, as he grew up and became a professional coach and then manager, he was still trying things out in the game as well as doing the job for real.
Now permanent Reims manager and doing a fantastic job in Ligue 1, Still tells us how he has got to where he is, and how Football Manager has played a part in his journey.

Will Still is genuinely living the dream of every single Football Manager player - fantastic to see him getting plenty of recognition for a stellar job this season.
It will come somewhat natural having spent so much of his life living in Belgium but the way he switches between speaking French and English when coaching is amazing

Clear communication is an underrated attribute of effective coaching, as an Arsenal fan watching the transition from Emery who would struggle due to language limitations o get his point across, while also demanding multiple tactical switches to Arteta who speaks 6-7 languages and uses most of them from the touchline

Brilliant brilliant interview. My personal opinion is that I hope Still doesn't get overhyped by the English media or get thrown into a dysfunctional PL club just for the sake of "young English manager" and get thrown under the bus from overpaid players. He has shown that the longer more gritty path is the more authentic one and I hope he continues his slow but consistent development in Ligue 1, if he continues down this path then he will get to the top in a more natural path.

English coach's struggle at bigger clubs. Eddie Howe is the only good coach England has.

@Jacob Field that's largely because English managers are close-minded. They don't like leaving England so they aren't exposed to new ideas. This guy kinda solves that problem.

Honestly here in France its not how it works, hes slowly starting to get recognition but when he will have a bad streak in a bad schedule lets say alot of our entertainment journalists will shit on him and probably be phisicaly insulting, atleast thats what i witnessed on alot of cases, then when he gets win streak they hop on his d and ride it for few weeks until they stop selling their satanic dogshit papers Also i watched an interview of this guy in french and its fascinating how intelligent he is, he has no accent can communicate very well which is already big in term of skills i believe
Awesome bloke, seems down to earth and gifted at the same time.
I can SEE the passion in his VOICE All the best going forward Will Still
Will Still is exactly the kind of name I'd come up with on FM if I'm ever managing in England.
I get strong Eddie Howe vibes from Will Still. Can't wait to see where his career takes him.

Truly inspiring, one of the few "wonderkid" football managers, wish him good luck and a long long career in the game
The man, the myth, the legend
Its more than just being a Football Manager nerd, coaching top flight or any professional side you need to deal with players and manage egos on a human level, you need to convince rich owners that you are the man to lead the team out of a negative into a positive.. coaching is so much more than simply being a tactics wizard
Took "completed it, mate" to a whole new level. Jay would be proud
I think this story the media are painting is far too simplistic. Will was a decent level Youth Footballer,he now has,or is studying for a UEFA Pro Licence which is the highest level of coaching qualification in football at present.Add to this that he did years of work to get a job within the game in the first place and among the most important things is that he speaks the language of a lot of Belgian and French people too. He's modest but he's done the hard yards to get there so good luck to to him.

The part about his favourite thing being creating an environment that people enjoy and excel in. That is what it’s all about
Such a humble guy, wish him all the best hopefully he becomes one of the greatest coaches ever
He's living the dream of hundreds of thousands, most likely millions of us who've been playing through Championship Manager/Football Manager for the last couple of decades! Wish him the best!

This man shows that it doesn't matter who or what or where you are in life but if you have a passion and work hard you can open any door, will generally is a prime example of how being passionate and working hard you can do and be anything you want to be. Hope he stays at remis for a few years and hone his craft to become a top tier english manager who can manage any top club in the world
His story is so incredible i still almost struggle to believe it 😂
Clearly a resilient and intelligent individual. He mentioned initially pursuing being a professional footballer; he’s waayyy too smart to be a footballer. Managerial role is perfect for him

I wish him the best with Reims for the rest of the season and the rest of his career
Found this a fascinating watch! I'm a huge FM player myself and have started doing some coaching and got a degree, but this guys is legit living the dream of every single FM player. Fair play to him and wish him all the best for his career going forward! 👏
How does this not have a million views ! This is INSANEE like bro you can really do anything you put your mind to like there is no limit it’s so inspirational for real
Only a matter of time before he comes and saves West Ham, we need you big man!
You can be whatever you want....that rolled off his tongue so genuine and so easily for him it's unreal think that makes the mental difference between him and millions of other people...
Intriguing career path so far. All the best in future success, Will!
HE’S ONLY GONE AND DONE IT
I'd love to play for this guy as a young player, people always question young coaches but I think they're more relatable and they're more often than not very passionate. I think his next stop will be in England.
Mr. Still, what a great story. definitely one i appreciate hearing as i am at that crossroads in my life after college so thanks for sharing. ps; tell Balogun he'd look great scoring goals in a USA kit
Incredible. Well done Will. Inspiration to all aspiring young football managers 👍 Believe
This gave me chills. What a story .
Wow an inspiring story from a young coach, just one of us who loves football, tinkering about their team on football manager and then actually becoming one is insane. Hope he lives his dream to coach West Ham and will be following and cheering him on!
I thought Nagelsmann would be the youngest ever coach. But this guy comes along! Just hope he continues to the great job he is doing at Reims!
If we’ve learnt one thing from this great story, it’s that we’ve been pronouncing Reims wrong the whole time.

Good luck to you Will Still, from someone who has played from the first Championship Manager!.
Love this guy. I’ve loved David moyes too but Will as our manager would be beautiful
When you are driven and really want to achieve your goals and dreams, things will start happening for you! He is where he is because, someone believed in his abilities and appreciated his professional dedication to the sport and team! Maybe we are having a revival of young coaches and young teams, taking on a new view of what football will be like in the future? Maybe we need this to happen in football.? Seizing the opportunity when you get one, is the ability to believe in yourself and the love and passion for what you do! I wish this young fella, many happy returns in football coaching...just don't take the England job!
Anything is possible when you put your mind and dedication towards it
Will Still will be in the Premier League soon. Magnificent story for fellow FM player.

I love stories like this. So inspiring.
As a person aspiring to become a professional coach myself, seeing hard work, determination and will (pun not intended 😛) being rewarded by achieving something otherwise thought as impossible, gives me great strength and motivation to try that myself and see where the journey leads me. Keep going Mr. Still. Keep dreaming. Much respect from a huge fan of your accomplishments from Greece 🤝
Will still is my hero, I’ve been playing career mode since I was like 7 been football mad from a young age. He makes me want to coach and now I play football manager most days after work I want to emulate him but in my own way :)

Really enjoyed this. Wonder how he’d get on as England manager someday. You don’t need to be an elite Guardiola/Ancelotti/Klopp level manager for international football - just a good coach who can deliver a good session and put the right energy into the players. Two of Will’s best qualities.
