Stab Cut Combos with the Korean Longsword [katana training / Jedok Geom]

Спорт

Today I practise some stab and cut combos with the Jedok Geom, the Korean Longsword. This is a mighty blade with a blade length over 1m, powerful in the stab and the cut. It is a heavy sword weighing over 1.3kg so it is important to have proper form and structure.
Swords: Blackfencer Synthetic Jedok Geom 102cm blade length

New subscriber here. I bought 2 1050 steel katanas recently and I have plummeted into a rabbit hole of sword videos on youtube. keep it up with the content man!

G'day JAB. Due to damage to my hands I prefer a light-weight blade but in a case of "heart over-ruling head" I recently purchased a Nodachi. Total length of 155CM and over 2.5kg with saya. All I can say is WOW, what a beast. As you said "it is important to have proper form and structure"

Wow, very nice. That's even longer than the total length of the jedok geom. What's the blade length?

@@JustaBug 120cm from the tsuba to the kissaki. I think Metatron has a Nodachi that is even longer. You're more than welcome to have a swing with it. Would make for an interesting video😉 I used to work as an RSO and my advice to new shooters was always start with a small calibre and when comfortable with that move up to something larger. Should have followed my own advice🙂

@@gazza8234 that's huge. Plus that's a rather short handle. The jedok geom is 102cm with a 36cm handle so yours has a good extra 18cm for a similar handle length. Thanks for the offer but I've been pretty busy recently so my video making has dropped off, maybe some time in the distant future. I think it's good advice to start small and go big to gain mastery over many weapons but there's no reason you can't follow your dreams and just master the nodachi

Since the sword is curved is it hard to accurately place your stabs?

At first yes, but after a while you get used to it

I like that he shows the parry before hand....I use the jab from the left side often, with the blade brought in to the chest and up by my face, with my body turned sideways... on the right , I must admit that on the right side is very difficult for me... ...when I practiced learning targeting w/this type of jab, I use a boken on a wooden pole, that really helped me see where my limitations were, overreaching is my main problem on hitting a target.... I also will extend my hand under the blade for longer controlled hits or for max distance, from the right side, I am rotating the blade while it is still in the body, where I end up as if I did a left jab....I also see that he starts from slightly lower, when striking from the right and follows the arc of the curve on the jab, which is more of an upwards and out...I think that is good form, with more stability and control Don’t no if this may help you.... I am not speaking from a professional point of view, just personal experience... but @JustABug is right that one will get use to it...

Pulling back to thrust isn’t a good idea as it allows your opponent to move in. Just thrust from your on guard position

  • @JustaBug

It's parrying your opponent's thrust in the first place. This is a counter thrust technique. The difference between our styles are not to say one is right or wrong so I'd appreciate if you stop trying to correct my form without understanding the proper context. I wouldn't go to your school to correct your senior students' forms

@@JustaBug well, in any martial art you never pull back as it allows you opponent to encroach onto you position. It’s like a cut, you never pull back behind yourself to cut forward. It opens you up to an attack

@@ivanfiorani1363 in plenty of martial arts you pull back before striking. Perhaps not in a Japanese frame of mind but having done MMA and Taekwondo I've stepped back to counter very effectively many times. Your style is just one style and the world is large. Furthermore, consider the blade length. The jedok geom has a 102cm blade length compared to the 70 something of the katana. Naturally they will have a different style of fighting. I hope you broaden your horizons friend

@@JustaBug maybe unarmed martial arts but weapons is very different. Stepping back is t pulling your arms back behind yourself. There are many styles but that doesn’t mean they are all effective. Look at the Russians slapping or the chi no touch style.

You reverse park yeah? Pulling back to create an angle is useful depending on the situation
