Korean Swords Sparring - 8 Pass Sparring Oct 2022 [katana sparring]
Спорт
Hey everyone, today we try a sparring method that I call 8 pass sparring. Here, you sword spar for 8 passes and record your strikes to see if you have any bad habits or if you are not striking a large variety of areas. Then you take that for the next set and aim to improve on your sparring. I find this to be an effective way to improve your sword sparring.

Katana is curved, Jingum is not correct me if I'm wrong because I find Jingum straight in google photos like Jikdu too.

Nah jingeom are curved too. Jikdo are a more modern invention based on stuff from pre joseon
Is striking to the legs allowed?

Yup. We have padded skirts and knee guards. We don't really reach below the knees so the bare shins are usually ok but we have shin guards to wear when sparring with people we don't know well
That system that you study, Jedok Geom, how far back does it date?

It started with General Li Rusong who brought the form to Korea in 1593, but was officially recorded and made part of the text that is now muyedobotongji in the early 1700s

@@JustaBug how old is Haidong Gumdo? It is often called traditional but from what I’ve seen it does go too far back

@@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 very modern in comparison, starting in 1982 I believe. They say it's based off muyedobotongji forms and you can see some of the forms in the patterns but it's definitely an inspired by thing and not a lineage or interpretation of the manuscripts by any stretch
Are those kummooyeh pants?

I'm not much of a kummooyeh practitioner, I just trained with them as part of my Korean sword journey. I tend to visit a variety of schools and train with them for some months and move on

@@JustaBug I see. Do you have any schools you would recommend checking out for more Korean exposure?

Honestly, not for more historically accurate stuff. I feel that the take away from my journey is that Korean sword arts in the modern day have been reduce to more of a dance than a martial form. Sibpalki is the most historically accurate but even they treat the historic forms like a dance with some tameshigiri. Hence why my club takes the HEMA like approach and does sparring focused training
