In September 2011, St Vincent took a giant leap forward with the release of third album, Strange Mercy. This time out Annie Clark was to combine her long-celebrated musical virtuosity with ambitious songwriting that ran a gamut of emotional cadences, all the while underpinned by a colourful sense of melody.
Recording these songs live for the first time, St Vincent has performed four tracks from Strange Mercy for the tenth visual installment in the 4AD Session series. Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie's new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums). Given St Vincent's transgression from the underground to the pop spotlight over the course of three studio albums, it's somewhat fitting that Shangri-La host the session having initially earned its name as a secret spot known only through word of mouth.
As with all of the sessions in the series, directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard filmed the four tracks with a clear artistic vision. In this instance, the inspiration came from an unlikely source -- the memory of seeing a 1968 Shirley Bassey performance of 'This is My Life' on Rai Uno for Italian TV. With that reference point in mind, Annie takes centre stage against the backdrop of a projected live-feed, resplendent in glamorous eye make-up and with her always-impressive guitar work brought clearly to the fore. More interestingly still, the classic showbusiness styling of the session is held in stark contrast to the affecting and darkly-tinged emotional undertones of 'Chloe In The Afternoon' and 'Surgeon', representing perfectly the themes that run throughout Strange Mercy.

This guitar riff never gets old. The entire song slithers like a lovely snake. Thank you!
Seriously, how the hell is she playing that and singing at the same time ??

It's not a particularly hard riff, even though it sounds quick.
man that guitar riff is so cool, and it's infectious to watch her hands doing it
I have read quite a few of the comments from different songs of hers on KZread and no one seems to talk about her mad guitar skills. This woman can do things on the guitar like no one else. She has an air of confidence when she plays that is rarely found in musicians. Only talented musicians are that confident. I love her, I want to marry her :-)

I totally agree. St Vincent is one of the best guitarists of our time. Her skills are especially on display in this song. I can't believe how fast her fingers move in the chorus. She is truly remarkable.

fuckin fetuses... yeah, she's pretty fast. not all there is to it, same riff over and over. and she can't sing.
Remember when I first discovered St Vincent. I was obsessed with this woman for a while lol. She is such a talented guitarist and vocalist. I remember back when I was dealing with insomnia this album helped me a lot. I'd fall asleep with headphones on listening to her strange mercy album start to finish on repeat. There is something kinda so calming and hypnotizing about her voice and music. LOVE HER!
This song and lyric may have been inspired by what Marilyn Monroe wrote once “Best Finest Surgeon-Strasberg to Cut Me Open”... This song's lyric goes "Best finest surgeon come cut me open". Strasberg was her acting coach while she lived in NY and started her own production company.

ocwaveoc69 Annie actually cites that poem as being the origin of the lyric in a few interviews!
Now St. Vincent is growing on me. Annie Clark seems almost like a dancer to me; her whole body is part of the performance. Not sure what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure what you're talking about either, but I know exactly what you mean. I stumbled across her work only recently. My theory of the moment: It isn't that she's good at rock, or good at jazz, or blues, or hip-hop, or whatever, or even that she's good at all of these things. She knows, musically and visually, exactly how to achieve the effect she wants at each moment. Eclectic without being schizophrenic or pretentious, beautiful without being "glam," soulful without having to rasp or mumble to prove her authenticity. Not the gritty kind of soulful, but pavement-in-the-midnight-rain soulful. Or maybe a rose petal with a drug habit. Okay, now I've confused myself.

Annie is so good at singing and playing contrapuntal riffs on the guitar at the same time
I like the fact that 4AD seems to have stayed legit all these years and is still backing some pretty decent acts. I like St Vincent and I like the label. "Applause"

So incredibly refreshing. A real artist. Goddamned amazing song and instrumentals and the visuals kick ass too. Love her!
A modern day guitar goddess. Just mesmerizing
My all time favorite song of hers, Got me like 😝 , love her. Ugh she’s a dream
Bjork, Feist and Kraftwerk in one, and her use of guitar is astonishing. A fascinating person. Peter Kroll, Singapore
this is one of my favorite guitar licks of all time
she is freaking AMAZING, i agree if you haven't seen her GO!!! your reactions to her makeup bore me, this woman is the best musician i've seen in a long time so whatever about her makeup. this is one of my favorite songs on her new album and they opened with it at the music box in LA.
This song is so interesting. It's not even a bop or a instant hit, but it's catchy in its own way.
I get a Bjork feel from her. Can't pinpoint why I do but that's what I feel. This will be on repeat early and often.

It's because of the cerebral quality of a lot of her music, I think.
I blushed when she started playing that riff

This woman has earned my ear and seeing her live a couple weeks ago validated the listen. Wow. She's got 'It'
Increíble synths and guitar
she started playing the guitar and i melted
That guitar solo gives me goose bumps! Definitely one of my favorite St Vincent songs.

HI Andrew....I am too. Up until 2 months ago, I never heard of her. And then after watching her comment about one of her influences thru a BBC doc about Kate Bush, I looked her up and then......I HAD TO GET ALL SHE HAS OUT. And then I also saw that she did an album with David Byrne....and then I realized a over a year ago, I saw her and David Byrne on David Letterman. She is awesome. You must see the video for Digital Witness.....Look for it here on You Tube....when you find it, scroll down through the comments and look for a link showing you the Video Digital FX footage. showing you how it looked when they filmed it I think in Madrid. SO AWESOME.

I'm a Kate Bush fan too. I first heard about her in 1985. I was watching MTV and Running up that hill came on. I have been a fan of David Byrne (Talking Heads) since the early 80's. I am a huge fan of many of the new wave and even much of the Punk bands that came out then. I don't often get a chance to listen any more. Working for a country station has me kind of limited right now. The only time I listen to music now is at work or when I am able to get some free time.

Lyrics ~ "Surgeon" by St. Vincent" I spent the summer on my back Another attack Stay in just to get along, get along, get along Turn off the TV, wade in bed A blue and a red A little something to get along, get along, get along Get along, get along, get along Best, finest surgeon Come cut me open Best, finest surgeon Come cut me open Dressing, undressing for a wall If Mother calls She knows well we don't get along, get along, get along I tell the mailman, never you mind, I'll sift through the piles And for him to just get along, get along, get along Get along, get along, get along Best, finest surgeon Come cut me open Best,…
This song means so much.
This video really made me fall for her.

St. Vincent is so goddamn beautiful, it's just mesmerizing watching her. It also helps that her music is tops as well.
9 years later and we are all still here ❤️
I saw her and it was the best show i have ever been to. Hands down. I go to shows every other day.
I really enjoy her guitar playing. I wonder what a Jack White collaboration would produce. Anyhow, this song is wonderfully sublime. I'm really glad I've gotten more in to her music lately,

St. VINCENT - A must SEE LIVE BAND....Phenomenal!!!
Most songs on KZread you just want them to end ASAP and you usually bail after a minute. This song you want to go on and on. Always captivating that Annie Clark is (That's YODA talk for Dang!).
she's gorgeous! I mean look at how she flips the switch.
Listing and jamming to this in the hospital while I'm waiting as a bunch of nurses and doctors walk by:
@vAbsolution I read a great article in Premier Guitar and without hearing a note, went and saw her last Wednesday in Houston. Unbelievable live. A totally unique mesmerizing singer guitarist (holy shit!) writer and performer. Never saw it coming...I'm still in shock (and awe). Perfect - no other word for it. My favorite show in years...if not ever.
in the 80s there was the new wave to me peoplecraving for music with edge
she’s killing it
The last bit, was brilliant!!!!
Brilliant & incomparable
Magical powerful performance. Love it.
Haunting, amazing.
urgghhhhh god dammit. st vincent is the only artist/celebrity I've ever had a "crush" on. I though I was above it but she is so amazing.
i feel like this performance really embodies what St. Vincent's about so badass!
Her guitar skills........ O.o ughhhh so good. She's a real musician that knows her stuff.
I really love this song. I've had it stuck in my head all day :)

Amazing! Thanks for the upload!
St. Vincent makes me feel horribly depressed and amazingly joyful at the same time.
Fantastic talent.
Love this 💕
As Annie wrote the majority of her work, I think she deserves the credit of composition. It's a bad ass song. No matter the technicality (which is more than there), she created it-and whether you or a schoolboy can imitate it is beside the point.
can't we just enjoy music for it's beauty, and not just the faces playing it?
