St. Vincent | Guitar Moves interview
Музыка
The iconic force behind St Vincent is Annie Clarke. Clarke and Sweeney knew each other from their local coffee shop. Here she shows Sweeney some moves her uncle showed her. Good jammage in this episode.
Original air date: July 9, 2013
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

She is so cute and charming...
God, I love that this series is popping back up
I love the cheeky bit of the Kid Charlamaigne solo at the very end. She know's what's good.
Everyone needs to go look at some videos of Tuck Andress playing guitar after watching this. The guy is incredible. Tuck & Patti were big Windham HIll artists in the late 80s early 90s
It’s nice to remember that her uncle is Tuck Andress of Tuck & Patti.. His Hendrix acoustic covers are sublime..

Thank you for that it was interesting to look them up
She is awesome!
I just keep coming back to the Dean Ween, Josh Homme and St Vincent interviews across the years. Great stuff. Edit: forgot to mention the Blake Mills one. His playing in that video is entrancing.

if u hate it so much then just dont comment
yo i forgot this taught me those weird harmonic moves when i was like 13 or 14 watching this learning guitar. i learned a lot from this series as a budding guitarist especially from the josh homme and billy gibbons ones! im 25 now and still making music and STILL using a lot of the moves i learned from this show! i produce my own records and play shows now too! thanks for doing this and i love that ur reposting the old ones, but would also love for you to make some new ones too! thanks for your service mr. sweeney!

Same here, The one with Dean Ween is too cool. I think it's the best interview ever with a guitarist, they were buddies in high school and it really shows in that interview. The one with Cass McCombs and Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile helped me lots with basic open chords, I learnt power chords before any of the "cowboy chords" so my learning curve was quite different starting guitar. Some of my favorite solos I've written have had that Blake Mills sitar bend. The Josh Homme one helped craft more original solos too
4:10 “It’s a classy move.” Very cool interview
Absolutely love this!
She is too cool. Bumped into Matt Sweeney outside Abbey Road Studios… and in 2014 Annie Clark on Portobello road… she said she was studying in Mexico City and visiting london… little did I know she was playing a festival… didn’t even know who she was… just thought she was a kooky chick who knew who Neutral Milk hotel was… until I saw this 😂
love how she's a Steely Dan nerd, I have never really listened to her music but I have seen a couple instances of her talking about her love for Steely Dan, the last 5 seconds of this being her playing the solo on Kid Charlemagne. that's badass

She’s amazing. She easily holds her own and fits so well with David Byrne on their album.
Those “Debussy chords” broke my hands
Total Zelda fairy fountain vibes with those Debussey voicings
This episode was so cool gotta check out the albums now
She's sooooo cool! Love her! ❤
Oh man. This is full circle. I remember this interview a few years back and I've been meaning to get around to learning the riff she plays at 7:58. I guess it's time to learn this. lol

Favourite one in the series... little more technical than some of the other ones. Fun guitars you don't see too often either, love it.
Those "debussy voicings" are extremely gnarly minor 11th chords i.e. the octave-4th is stacked on top of a minor chord shell voicing. I did not know that kind of sound existed without open tunings. Wild. So much to learn. Playing those chords hurt my hands tho XD
Her dissonance has a beauty all its own…and while my ears def not to be trusted I’m pretty sure they almost stumbled into 2 QOTSA songs w those oddly haunting chord diddies….insert gasp thinking of a Homme produced St Vincent towering Monolith of Dissonance…

I really hope they team up for a Desert sessions record....or anything really
7:59 ughhh damn girl! That feel is crazy. Power of the fingers. No pick in between ❤
So cool!!
If anyone out there hasn’t hesrd Tuck Andress, go listen now!!! Tuck and Patti are unbelievable. His parts on their version of Woodstock from CSN is unreal. He is truly a genius. Crazy he’s her uncle…
Awesome 😎
I never understood why some people act ashamed of having studied music when they're musicians. As if it somehow will belittle their art.
You have some of the best guitarist interviews! wtf man. Whooo are you, I sleep under a rock?
What a great guitarist! So creative….
Check out her cover of Big Black’s Bad Penny.
She's an amazing guitarist.
This might be my favorite Guitar Moves interview bc you can almost bottle up the awkwardness.
NOICE she plays finger style
wooooooh classic video from the archives,!!!1
The hum of those two Deluxe Reverb tube amps sounds so rad!! 😎🤙
God damn best show on the internet
Lenny Breau harmonic technique from way back. Just recently got into her music. Very cool and modern.
Those Debussy voicing sound very like the 12 string sort of Voicings Genesis used to regulary use on their earlier tracks. Stuff like Suppers Ready and a lot of the tracks on Trespass.
The fact she plays Carlton at the end is a cool little nugget haha.
That last artist mention, Ali Farka Toure is a gem !
Please re release the ace frehley guitar moves. Thanks Matt. Loves this series
love the Dan Armstrong! Love Annie too of course....
Oh hell yeah
So happy these are all getting reuploaded on their own dedicated channel
Thank you for creating a dedicated channel and re-uploading these videos
Totally amazing, so interesting to watch the technique, great format thank you
Saw her play in a small tent venue in halifax in 2014 with my daughters. Her guitar was out of this world
I saw “2 weeks ago” on the video heading and thought this might be a new updated interview together. That would be interesting. Saw this years ago.

Wow I just discovered Tuck Anderss! Love a musical family! So cool!
Wish this was longer but glad you got in. Good stuff
Another re-upload? Remember watching these a few years ago..
This video introduced me to St Vincent when it first dropped. Seen her live 3 times now. What’s the riff at 8:00 tho????
Matt, will you be recording any new episodes of guitar moves?
These are great. Thanks for not trying to sell me something.
Eazy-E R.I.P. And gosh, is Annie ever cute. ❤ Love her style. Matt, you're a dope cat. I'd love to meet you someday, and jam a little.
Oh man. I'm in love. That voice! She's an amazing guitarist too. I love the way her brain seems to go
Fuck yeah
I love this interview from this point in St. Vincent’s career but damn it sure isn’t helping me resist that craigslist post I saw for a Harmony Bobkat just like hers here lmfao
Nice men 🥂🙏🥂
I’m six years younger than St. Vincent but also started taking lessons at zoo in sixth grade. I don’t know if I would call it shitty but there was a better guitar store connected to it called spier music which I found kinda crazy. It was one of those shops you don’t see anymore that only had those 80s and 90s shredder guitars like the warlock. I never really see those guitars even posted online I wonder who ended up with all of them.
🎉
low rent tuck and patti! you go!
this guy is Trevor from GTA :D love the show!
Hey Sweeney, can you do Mike Einziger next? The fretting the fret octave thing reminded me of his playing.
Harmony with gold foils, nice.
Ya ya ya
There’s a lot of fretting going on here. Quite exotic.
Is Sweeney gonna do new ones? I saw him play with Endless Boogie. Maybe he should do one with them. And Ira Kaplan. And definitely Poison Ivy, one of America's great female guitarists!
Well, she wasn't kidding about Tuck Andress.
I love this. For so many reasons. Two established artist geeking out, and learning and being open. COol.
Can you re-upload the Josh Homme one T_T And make another one with Homme
