In the closet, the filmmakers tell stories and the musicians just go full melodrama... as the gods intended.🙌🔥
The bitter tears of petra von kant is so st vincent coded
fuck yeah her music is so cinematic. The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant is exactly like her first album.

Going to put that on later with that in mind.
“To Die For” is one of those quintessential 90’s indie-boom movies that is so subversive and yet so expertly made that it’s hard to imagine anything like it being made today.

I'll have to check it out. I'm a HUGE Gregg Araki fan.....The Doom Generation and Nowhere are perfect. There's something I love about a certain time of indie subversive weirdo movies from the 90s.... I've never even heard of To Die For tho.
did y’all listen to “all born screaming” yet? it’s amazing! I think my favorite St. Vincent album now, that first listen just gobsmacked me. not surprising in the slightest that Annie Clark is a cinephile with taste and has such distinct stories & connections with film
I'm absolutely SHOCKED that she did not pick up a David Lynch title, if for no other reason just to talk about it. She's a big fan.

That's probably why since she was taking stuff that she didn't already have. If she's a big fan of Lynch then it stands to reason that she probably already owns his stuff. Especially if she used to shop at Kim's back when it was still on St. Mark's Place.

These videos are condensed heavily. I have noticed in several closet videos that the person choosing will have 2-3 films in their hand that they didn't talk about. Criterion probably does it for accessibility which is a shame because I would happily watch 30+ minute Criterion haul videos.

I feel like everyone who visits the closet should do one pick like she did at the end. Just spin around and point to a random film on the shelf and take it. Let random chance pick just one movie for you. What a genuinely great idea.
Every guest should be asked to do a "blind buy choice" as their final pick. That's how you break out of your comfort zone and discover something new.
So, I'll be honest. I'm not big into music, so I'd never hear of St Vincent until this video. But now I'm watching music videos on her channel and goddamn, I'm digging it.

The Party is one of my favorites. Worth listening to if you haven't.
Love her music. This is the Criterion closet cross-over I didn't ask for but I definitely needed!
Damaged people are fascinating... what a mundane yet unchaotic world it would be without them.
I remember seeing her when she had curly hair...supporting The National. She's so good
Dazed & Confused is one of those films where I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't love it. It's so much fun. The Bitter Tears Of Petra von Kant is far & away my favourite Fassbinder, it's so good.
I could listen to Annie talk until the end of time. It's the passion and openness to her heart and soul. Plus she's just so damn cute.
Amazing picks, great energy to St, Vincent. Loved her David Byrne collabs!

St Vincent is so cool! I love her enthusiasm and physicallness!!!!!✌️❤️
"Women on the Verge..." is a fantastic pick.
When St. Vincent chooses and describes her feels on To Die For beginning at 1:58, I felt that. LOL!!!
To Die For and Nicole Kidman's tremendous performance do not get enough attention! Thanks for showing some love!👏
The “blind pick” at the end is such a good idea
so much respect for picking Trainspotting and Dazed & Confused, two of my all time faves
St Vincent is an island in the Caribbean and it appears a rather vampiric looking woman! :D
She’s just all around Badass/cool
I adore how when she mentions Paranoid by Black Sabbath, she clearly unconsciously air guitars the main riff
To Die For is a masterpiece ❤️
Yay new films ill check out! I loved Chloe in the afternoon, she has great taste.
Big W on the Akerman boxset
Absolutely perfect picks.
I was so hoping that she'd pick Harold & Maude, BUT the choices she made were perfect.
Dazed & Confused! A forever re watchable. Good choices…
Fabulous! Wonderful choices, knew she'd go for those ❤ great idea of the random pick at the end, agree it should be a regular fixture 😅
Fifteen years ago, she signed my CDs commenting on how similar we are in terms of age. The autographs reflect this conversation =D
St. Vicent needs to be in movies, just that kind of face that could literally do anything.
She'll love "Diamonds of The Night" for sure :)), cause I freaking love it ^^!!!
i love you so much annie clark
Thank you fate! Diamonds of the Night needs to be talked about more.
St vincent in the criterion collection? What a dream come true!

Diamonds of the night is such a good blind pick. Unbelievable film
Great pics! Hope this means we will get "The Nowhere Inn" in the collection!
Ok, I haven’t seen ANY of these. I will watch them ALL.
Diamonds Of The Night - a pretty good random pick.
I am still waiting for criterion to release "Weekend at Bernies". So amazing. LOL. But really. I love that film. McCarthy surprised me on that one.

I worship this woman ❤ (and her taste in film)
Brand Upon The Brain! Excellent choice, and reminds me that it's been a while since I've seen it.
great picks, but I wish she didn't pretend like she didn't know where "The Bitter Tears..." was at the shelf ;)
Wow, looked up trailer for Diamonds of the night. It looks like a must see.
Oh, Diamonds of the Night. It's a Czechoslovak movie and it's very trippy.
So much credit where it’s due here. I would’ve taken over that entire closet.
The composure of the people who get to go into the criterion closet. I'd lose my shit and have a panic attack.
This was a fun one. Some films I have not seen, so I will have to check them out.

Fassbinder is just beyond words. Its crime he's only known in parts of modern Germany and among film snobs. You have to watch his entire catalog at least once in your life. Obviously St.Vincent knows movies, I wasn't even a little surprised.

As a straight man, I agree with many of her choices, hahaha!! Great films are great films. The best part of the closet is when people pick films that should be rewatched and remembered, like "To Die For". I could never do the blind pick, I'm too much of a control freak, lol!!

I think I have a firm grasp on "gay" as a personal or aesthetic quality (not necessarily present, but often coinciding, with homosexuality). "Queer" still baffles me, though. Apparently, "code-switching" is part of it. I'll have to check out 'Petra von Kant'.
