SSRI Withdrawal

Ғылым және технология

My Blog Post About this: jeffpharmacist.com/2019/01/08...
Hello everyone! In this video I explained Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome and the effects of abruptly stopping an antidepressant. Often it is called SSRI withdrawal, but these symptoms can occur with non - SSRI antidepressants. Those are tricyclics, MAOi, etc. People complain of Brain Zaps, and other odd maladies. I describe the acronym FINISH. Please enjoy!

You are half right. The half-life affects withdrawal but so does the damage from the medications. These are neurotoxins that damage receptors in the brain. The brain is powerful and can heal itself. Unfortunately it takes months and years for many people. But it does heal. Keep your head up everyone. You can do it!

The myth that discontinuation syndrome is solely correlated with drug half-life needs to stop. It will correlate with onset of symptoms, but not length of symptoms. Once drug elimination is reached, the length of time it takes the brain to find homeostasis (typically upregulation of serotonin, dopamine and/or norepinephrine receptors depending on the drug) varies drastically person-to-person and unfortunately that person will suffer a varying severity of symptoms - often highly debilitating. Telling the patient that they'll be fine in 1-2 weeks might seem like a good idea (and is standard among many psychiatrists) but does not help them in the long-term and just propogates misinformation from the pharma industry to shift more drugs. It may seem like conspiracy and thus easily dismissed, but unless you're 3 months into brain-zaps (theorised in more recent literature to be localised 'controlled' mini-seizures as opposed to 'uncontrolled' seizures such as epilepsy) with a psychiatrist telling you its just in your head, its hard to understand. SSRI/SNRI/NDRI are a tool that can be used to help many, but their over-prescription is verging on malpractice. Whats worse is that many are now prescribing them in combination (typically an SNRI and an SSRI), increasing risk of serotonin syndrome. Note, I said 'over'-prescription. They still have a place and many are in need of them - but its a risk-reward calculation and if the medical community don't accept that the risk is higher than what is being propagated then that calculation is flawed and you end up with over-prescription. I.e. "You seem sad, take this pill".

Combining 5HT2-a drugs, like antidepressants, don't only increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, but even HPPD, which messes a persons vision up with life with visual disturbances like visual snow.

I really like that you are bringing up the topic of not knowing whether it's your symptoms coming back or if it's just the withdrawal because I have been off of my medication, not by choice but because the secretary refuses to give me a refill until my next appointment just because I missed my last appointment. I hope she gets fired I hate her right now because I have been without my medication for a week and I am feeling absolutely torn apart and like I am being tortured at the moment. I thought it was my symptoms coming back though as well of feeling like complete mush. I am literally feeling every single symptom I am having horrible jerking and twitching tremors nasty headache I feel as if I am going on a rollercoaster almost you know that feeling of your heart dropping but it's throughout my entire body.

You're doing a great thing with this channel. This is the first video I've watched but I'm already a believer in the channel. Would you consider going over the differences between a doctor prescribing antidepressants to mask symptoms vs. a proper (3 to 4 week) DSM diagnoses fallowed by prescription psyche drugs?

I think that its best to see a psychiatrist and psychologist rather than a family doc for depression. If the doctor has time to spend with you then its probably okay but your right often the doctors are in and out of the room in just a few minutes. Pharma companies do a lot of the drug education, which is probably biased. Often we see a new medication that is very expensive prescribed even if it is not better than the older cheaper one. That is probably a result of marketing in many cases.

I had mild Vertigo under withdrawal. I still do right now. Had extremely painful diarrhea for 2 weeks under withdrawal then it went away. I quit due to not having insurance to refill prescriptions at pharmacy. Plus I get extremely suicidal passively in my mind with thoughts of killing myself every day. I have intense thoughts of killing others every single day when I take my drugs as prescribed. When I take them as prescribed I can't breath properly, have to urinate every 5 minutes or every minute, now I am stuck with stomach cramps, weak sex drive, flu like symptoms of violent dry coughing every day all day, head aches, insomnia, fatigue and feeling pain in my muscles by slight movement or being sedentary. No motivation to do anything productive, just like when I took them as prescribed. I marathon slept when I took the drugs as prescribed, when I woke up I felt black out drunk. These drugs are addictive as crack while taking them and under withdrawal. Not sure if I will be infertil if I do finish withdrawal, hopefuly not. Not being in a nation with Universal Health Care sucks. A Hospital may admit me to a Psych Ward if they suspect I quit cold turkey, which I did. Unless I talk to the right person to get a refill. I will be bombarded with questions if I took my drugs and be asked massive amounts of health questions. Anti Depressants gave me intense panic attacks every few weeks with or without anxiolitics.

I can tell you my experience. I was on 5 mg of Prozac. My doctor told me since I was on such a low dose I could discontinue. I was doing great. Suddenly driving home one day I got extreme anxiety. I looked at my calendar it was exactly 14 days from discontinuing the Prozac. It was so bad. I would wake up at night with a panic attack right when I was trying to fall asleep. All through the night it was horrible. The anxiety drove me to get back on the Prozac. It took me 5 years to wean off them. I’d try but have to get on them because it was so horrible. Eventually I found natural supplements to help after reading many books about the withdrawals of SSRI’s. I’ve been off them for close to 10 years & still struggle with anxiety but the thought of ever going through that nightmare again keeps me from trying another medication.

Just thought I'd share my experience :) I've been on Escitalopram 10mg, then bumped up to 20mg/day. Because of weight gain, I decided to get off them about a month ago. First, I noticed this thing that happened where I would have that shock that comes with the feeling of falling, but just concentrated in my head area, especially when I blink, move my head or move my eyes too fast. These gravityshifts/electric waves were prominent during the first week or so. I had also had bouts of dizziness, but nothing serious. It was just a nuisance, but enough for me to feel concerned ever so slightly. During the second week, I noticed my appetite beginning to subside and these zaps were slowly beginning to happen less and less. I drank enough water, used some Rosemary and sometimes Lavender essential oils (rubbed a few drops and massaged my temples) and this helped the dizziness a little. I also tried to limit my screen-time in the second week and did more yoga and ate a plant based diet. During week three, I am starting to lose a bit of weight and return to my usual ball-park weight, although still a little chunky. I'd usually weigh around 70kg, but during my stint with Escitalopram, I picked up 15kgs. Today is the end of the forth week. New brain, who dis?! Absolutely no brain zaps, no dizziness, still rubbing oil on my temples, still doing yoga, still eating plant based and still drinking water and peeing like a racehorse but feeling better than I had, in a long time. Listen to your body, folks.

@@Liz-hc4um Hi there :) I am happy that you found it reassuring. You can and WILL get past this. Maybe try and have a few "safety nets" in place even while you're on medication... Set small daily goals and meet them. You'll be surprised how much it'll enhance your mood. I downloaded this app called Daylio where I input my daily mood and wrote down a few lines on it. At the end of the day they give you a summary, that way you can track which activities take you closer or further from your goal. I believe in you! It was super dark for me while on medication and I had a lot of anxiety over being anxious which didn't help my depression at all. But if I can do it, so can you! Right now, I've lost even more weight and I work out four or five days a week. (I just do some KZread short Tabata videos working my core, arms and legs - I also try and run each day. Some days I run 20 mins, other days I run 10 mins, its all good) and I'm still eating a plant based diet. If you tweak only these things in your life right now even while you're still on meds, it'll make coming off them so much easier. I really wish you the best! If there's anything else you'd like to know, I'm a comment away! Stay safe and stay healthy! Much love!

Oh and just to give a complete update (excuse my rambling) I continue to have no withdrawal symptoms. Zero brain zaps, no more feeling bloated, feeling more motivated in my daily life. I am still talking to my therapist once a week and I try to be as open/receptive as possible. Thus far I'm doing OK. Things will get easier once you hunker down and decide enough is enough (provided you have a good exit strategy)

For my first day cutting off escitalopram, there was this weird metronome effect happening. It was so perfectly periodic. Basically about every 8 or 9 seconds, I would feel like passing out for a fraction of a second, and that lasted literally the whole day. It was a very uncomfortable first day, but that feeling was pretty much 20% as strong the next day. After 4 days I no longer felt any of this discomfort

I recently asked a doctor about getting prescribed lorazepam and he said he was worried about me becoming addicted to it. So I quickly reminded him that I was already addicted to Zoloft. I can't even miss my normal dose time by a few hours before I started to get "dope sick" and brain zaps. He told me Zoloft wasn't addictive and you can easily go off it. This was when i was looking for a new doctor. Needless to say I didn't go back to him for that ignorant comment.

I've been on 10 mg Celexa for 25 years. I started getting Parkinson's-like symptoms that I attributed to the SSRI so a year and a half ago I started to very slowly withdraw using a liquid titration method. I titrate by .01 ml (I crush a 10 mg tablet in 100 ml water) every 6 days and after a year and a half I am down to 2 mg so far. I don't feel any emotional discomfort. No brain zaps. But about 6 months ago I started feeling REALLY BAD. I thought I developed Long Covid but now I'm wondering if my symptoms are actually due to the slow withdrawal. I've always been an insomniac, but now it is through the roof. I also experience sudden, overwhelming bouts of irresistible sleepiness during the day. It's almost like Narcolepsy. It only happens on the days when I've had enough sleep. I also experience roving dull pain in my limbs. Could these symptoms be due to withdrawal? If so, will they ever go away. I'm suicidal because of the lack of sleep and useless days of sleepiness on the days I do sleep. I can't go much slower than I'm going. I will hold for a few months at 2mg. Any advice would be enormously appreciated. Maybe it's Long Covid. God knows what's happening but it is unbearable. I feel for everyone else suffering along with me.

Unless having any more of the medication will put you at considerable risk, you should always wean yourself off slowly and under the guidance of professionals. I had to suddenly stop one for medical reasons and I'm not going to lie, it was utter hell on earth for months. Others I have come off slowly with minimal discomfort so please don't let me putt you off if your doctor feels you might benefit from medication. Just please be aware that every antidepressant on the market has potential benefits as well as potential risks and what might work for one person might not work for another. I have been on various antidepressants since I was 12 (they are not recommended for children btw) and have only found one that makes me feel so much better and the only side effect I have is a dry mouth which is easy to deal with. There were lots that didn't agree with me and I wanted to give up trying them since I thought they all had no effect or uncomfortable side effects. But I must say for me personally the trial and error was worth it for the benefits I have now. On the other hand the same one I take has caused some others very unpleasant effects so its up to you to weigh the pros and the cons before agreeing to take them. All of the above goes for anti-psychotic medication as well.

Always? I cannot do that as where I live I would have to go to the Hospital, long waiting time usualy, or Urgent Care long waiting time most days due to COVID testing. I do not even see my Psychiatrist terrible often. Plus, I don't have insurance due to the burden of not being in a nation with Universal Health Care, unless I pay sky rocket high prices for these happy pills poison drugs. I am not going to tell a Hospital I quit cold turkey or need a refill due to some people bombarding me with questions if I took the drugs daily, if they pressume I quit cold turkey, they will admit me to the Psych Ward upstairs or have to wait 1 full day to be transfered to another Psych Ward. Psych Wards are dehumanising and force you to take shots if you refuse too many times by holding you down with shots if you give them hell. Unless I talk to someone understanding there that will refill me easily. At the Hospital they will keep asking me if I took my meds. Psych Wards are boring as hell and you feel like you are in prison unable to leave. It is hard to be able to get an advocate at Psych Wards that will let you leave as you please if you don't know what to look for and what to avoid.

Thank you . I'm Tapering off Zoloft and wish I'd never started. I was in 50 mg for only five months. I got down to 20 then halved to about 12.5 roughly as have no scales and the sweating is horrible mostly in the morning , panic attacks come back . I had six weeks of increased anxiety on these a the start . I never knew this would be so hard and my GP said I wouldn't get withdrawal just half dose and stop . I told her I didn't get side effects on Prozac years ago but was only on them a short time . I didn't get withdrawal either just couldn't cry . She suggested swapping and Tapering like this to avoid withdrawal. I'm trying not to but it's so hard I might have to give in 😭

@@PurpleZebraMagic I need help. I lost my sex drive after quitting SSRIS, when I was on SSRIs as prescribed my sex drive was more potent than before, way more. Stomach cramps are annoying and hot flashes of warmth on my body, when I first quit I had cold flashes of being cold. I have runny nose and violent dry coughing with phlegm. Fatigue is a big one from insomnia. My hunger is reduced from quitting. My panic attacks are completely gone, violent agression and suicidal adeations are mostly gone, but I do have passive suicidal adeations from the withdrawal process. I just want this to end. Stopped in mid November, going back on them would give me a huge head ache now and make me feel worse than now. I want my sex drive to come back intact, but not sure if it is since I stopped near the end of the month last month. Going off of these is like a hard drug on the street. My Psychiatrist claims SSRIS are not addictive like other Psychiatric drugs, but she is so wrong on that. Painful diarrhea happened to me the first 2 weeks I quit. Only quit due to harsh side effects of rebelion, but more because when I moved out I have not received my insurance yet, which I will get soon. Most of these drugs are poison.

I've been having a very difficult time to move my eyes and causes real heavy dizziness every little movements of my eyes and hurts to be looking anything for already 3weeks. Wynn Piper I wish you the best, God bless you. I’ll keep this thread updated once a month. I’m going back to dr tomorrow to get a refill as I stopped cold turkey this past Friday. And I’m gonna tell him that I’m wanting to taper off

Im going through it now. The initial blast put me in the ER. Don't be afraid to take on the beast. We are stronger than the garbage big Pharma and the doctors gave us. Be strong and don't quit. It will be over in a few days. GOD bless.......

It's not that the medicine stays in your body forever. It's the damage to the CNS and the way the brain has to relearn how to uptake serotonin. Alcohol doesnt stay in your body forever, but it too sometimes takes years for the brain to recover from the effects.
