SSL THE BUS+ vs SSL G-COMP (Hardware Shootout)

Музыка

🔥 Is the SSL G-COMP 500 Series Compressor better than THE BUS+? In this video, I’ll show you how THE BUS+ can sound the same or better than the G-COMP.
Not only will we match the settings on the G-COMP and THE BUS+ and compare them head-to-head, we'll also listen to all nine levels of 4K Mode, LOW THD and FEED-BACK mode, plus all four modes of operation - classic stereo, summed side chain stereo, dual mono and mid side.
Thank you to Spirits of Leo for giving me permission to use their song "Patience" for this video. Please support them by giving the song a listen at the link below.

    @thePunkRockMix Nope. You were right for sure! I'm still missing the simplicity of the G COMP though. You could just turn it on, and it did exactly what you wanted it to. With The Bus+, I find myself trying out all nine levels of distortion several times. I always end up on level four or the factory default level five though so, that may end up becoming a set it and forget it thing for me in the future. Or, I may just end up grabbing another 500 Series G COMP again! 😂

    Is it really any difference in sound (punch, attack etc.) compared to plugins that imitate SSL comp? I find Lursen Mastering Console SSL clone comp. does the same thing, it glues mix like a pro, punch is awsome etc. What this SSL BUS + gives me on a mix bus or mastering chain? This 4K is O.K. on some material, but generally a shot it the foot, you don't need this blanked all over the mix, you can color the mix in 1000 ways before going into digital domain or later. Is it more "alive" like for example playing on real Fender Rhodes piano Vs. some great KORG, Yamaha sampled version or what? It's a real enigma to me. There are no tubes, it's not a "color box", it's not optical compressor, what the heck are we buying? :))

    Good presentation style - good production values - you need better monitors - those HS monitors are good entry level monitors but are not adequate to be for serious work - sections of your presentation simply repeated the exact words of Andy in the SSL video

  • @LesVegasMusic

    @LesVegasMusic

    6 ай бұрын

    @teashea1 Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words. Agreed. I don't use those monitors for anything. Never have. They're just there as a placeholder for now. I've always used my Sennheiser HD-600's and Slate VSX headphones for monitoring and I've been getting great results. When I go to get new speakers, I'll be getting a pair of Dutch & Dutch 8C's. I've never seen the SSL video you mention, but if certain words were repeated, that's most likely because we're both using the same language from the site or manual. I try to rewrite anything I learn from the manufacturer's written materials and share my own words and thoughts whenever possible, but the things that are just facts like the parts or technology a piece of equipment uses I sometimes leave as-is. Thanks again!

    @@searchiemusicHi again! I didn't mix or master this song. The band was kind enough to let me use their mix with all mix bus processing removed for the audio demo portion of this video. However, I will say that in mixing or mastering, if the artist intended the mix to have more information on one side than the other at any given point in the song, then that's perfectly fine - just as long as it what was intended. Personally, I like balanced stereo information on the mixes and masters I do for my own songs.

    @Fishplants That's a good price. Good get! I'm sure the Heritage Audio 500 series rack is good. I've never owned any RME hardware or used their software so I'm not familiar with that. Wish I could help. Hit up their support team and see if they can walk you through how to setup your 500 series rack with your RME UCX. I don't think you should have to do much in their totalmix software though. Just make sure you're going out from your RME, into your 500 series rack and out from your 500 series rack to the inputs on your RME audio interface. Then make sure the routing is correct in your DAW. So for example, with the G COMP, install it in slots 1 and 2 closest to the handle on the left of your OST-6. Then connect Inputs 1 and 2 on the back of your OST-6 to Line Outputs 1 and 2 on the back of your RME interface. Then connect two cables from Line Inputs 1 and 2 on the front of your RME UCX and connect them to OUTPUT 1 and OUTPUT 2 on the back of your OST-6. Next, go into your daw, load up one stereo track with a stereo wav file on it and assign the output of that track to RME UCX 1 and 2 Out and the input to RME UCX 1 and 2 input. See if that gets the G COMP's needle moving. Also make sure the G COMP is in and not in bypass and crank up the input, ratio and threshold to get the needle rocking. That really should be all that's to it. Review your connections and let me know how it goes.

    Here’s a weird trick but it works. If you plan on releasing music 44.1 / CD quality or streaming, don’t print or record anything at 96K. It will actually sound better if everything remains at the same sample rate as it’s final destination. I have A/B this countless times over the years and I’m confident most will come to the same conclusion.
