    Thanks Goat of Neptune 🐐 - it was a concern for me too when it first showed up. I’ll admit, I did read through the manual before using it which is maybe a rare thing to do these days, but it made everything very clear and easy to understand. It really doesn’t take long actually using the Bus+ for it all to sink in too. There is lots of text on the front panel indicating features which is also a little confusing when you first start using it, but the text actually becomes extremely helpful once you understand everything and lets you navigate the controls very easily. Glad you enjoyed, take care!

    Super Cool Review!! Here comes one Question to be forwarded to the R&D Team of SSL: If you have all inputs running throu a micro controller as I understood it, why the heck wouldnt you also add a usb port to this thing, have you tune on the front panel, save your settings to your computer and have lots of configurations by sidechaining the front controlls from your software. Also you could sidechain the frontpanel live controlling it from the software or even with the UC-1. That would be the ultimate hybrid solution IMO. Analog hardware, real direkt inputs, but also software controlled from your desk with endless profiles with the push of a button. So much potential not beeing used here.

Instead of the cliche clickbate cr@pola so many others use. You did a funny creative and unique intro. Personally the vid was longer than expected but that's why we can fast forward and rewind. The way you do the vid more is better because you hit all the right points. Hey thanks man, appreciate the kind words! Yeah, one of the things I hate the most is all the clickbait nonsense KZreadrs in audio world! I have no interest in that, or becoming part of that, I would rather actually work on real jobs and just occasionally make my own wild videos on things that interest me or I feel I can actually offer good insight on. The Dione is cool, a friend of mine picked up their special Ukrainian coloured version a little while ago - I have not used the Stam version though. Maybe you could sell both, get a Bus+ and something a bit different like the Heritage Succesor... depends what you normally use the two comps for I suppose. I haven't tried that Heritage myself, but I hear great things about them! Cheers mate x

    Hi Dude, thanks so much for the in depth review! Since You own both - Fusion and the Bus+. I was wondering if both of those units make sense having them in one chain for the mixbus? Some features like the - EQ, - VintageDrive/4k Mode, - HFcomp/DynEQ seem to be redundant then? Or do they offer dramatically different colours?

  • @DRUMVILLE

    @DRUMVILLE

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would say they make perfect sense to use together and although I don’t know this as fact, I would suspect when SSL designed and made Fusion a few years back now - they definitely had the idea in mind to build a second “expansion” unit focused on buss comp. Fusion is great and offers a lot of colour and shaping for your mix buss - but for me the key mix buss processing sound is compression - which the fusion lacks. It has an insert point though that allows you to add in another piece of gear, and place it before fusions EQ if you choose. That to me sounds like they knew what they were doing well in advance… I think they are great together though, 4K mode is more like “console emulation” than full on saturation, and vintage drive kind of picks up where that left off. So if you want to drive your mix a bit with VD you can, but for more of an actual console emulation sound you can get that from 4K mode on Bus+. Fusion EQ is great, but only two bands so you are always likely doing that smiley face thing. Obvious Bus+ gives you dynamic EQ, but it can also just be treated as two extra bands of EQ where you can put them in low mid and midrange positions to give yourself a full 4 band EQ if you choose. So yeah, I would say they play well and compliment each other very nicely!

  • @DRUMVILLE

    @DRUMVILLE

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Nick, thanks for the kind words! Absolutely, I am always compressing my drum buss which then feeds a compressed mix buss! You could definitely keep the Nekotronics (heard great things about those) and get an SSL Bus+ - or you could consider getting a different style of compressor for drum buss for another flavour option. For instance my drum buss is an API 2500 - which is another VCA style comp, same as SSL, and features the same sort of time constants for attack and release, it just has a different "American" sound to it. Great for drums, super tight and punchy. Or just go with two SSL styles - nothing wrong with that!

    If you’re looking to get into hardware, my opinion is that buying something nice for your mix buss is probably what will give you the biggest impact and value for money - if you’re doing a lot mixing. Something you mix into, that all of your audio runs through and gets shaped by will have a huge impact on your sound. I do find though that a lot of people go into this with the “I’m only going to buy X”, and they end up with a single buss compressor or whatever. That’s great, but the real benefits come when you have a full analogue chain, with multiple pieces doing unique things. You get a culmination effect. Obviously more expensive though 😂

I have a doubt… I don’t have hardware of this kind and I am thinking of buying this to give more punch to my music (I make electronic music with Apollo X8 as an audio interface). Hey Roger, maybe you saw in the video but I also have an Elektron Analogue Heat 🙂🔥 it’s a cool unit, I like it a lot. I assume you are mostly mixing in the box with plugins then? Are you familiar with mixing into a mix buss chain, and use compression on the whole mix? The Bus+ can definitely add punch to your mixes, especially when set up with the correct timing variables for attack and releases. Getting them to match with your track and allow enough transients to cut through whilst also having the release set correctly will give you a punchy sound. The SSL bus compressor sound is probably more associated with the term “glue” though. But glue can be punchy too! Glue just means that everything is kind of pushed together and given a cohesive sound - it’s the difference between a bunch of tracks just laid together with different volumes and pan positions, and the sound of a record where everything fits and joins together nicely. I think it could be a good one for you - I would recommend trying one in person if that is at all possible! And if not maybe try out some SSL G Comp style plugins on your mix buss to see if you like the style and sound, and then think about getting the hardware!

I haven't done acoustic guitars in a while but I would absolutely consider bringing it out for something like that - especially if it's stereo miked. Stick it on feedback mode for gentler compression, I bet it would be lovely. Same for drum overheads. oh no 😭😭😭 I'm not trying to upset you bro... but I have used an awful lot of hardware and have done the whole "buy cheap gear" thing before many times. It ain't as good. Warm Audio particularly. Some of their stuff is alright I will admit, but the rest of their stuff just doesn't cut it for me, including their preamps and that G Comp. They just don't sound good to me - they are like plasticy, clean, vague approximations of the gear they are emulating. Even the Warm stuff I still had that I liked (2 x early WA76 + 2x EQP-WA) has now gone because I wanted something better. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great there is lower priced gear available making this whole thing we do more accessible. Beginners can now buy outboard and go back to learning the basics of engineering outside of the box! Even if you aren't a beginner, and you just don't want to drop thousands on a piece of gear - you now have an actual option! It's great! But you do get what you pay for in most cases. As for plugins. Yeah sure, you could spend as much time as you like stacking chains of plugins together to emulate a bit of gear if that's what you want to do. If you watch the video I don't think I ever said you can't do that. I too am a plugin user and have my own vast collection. At the end of the day, you do what works for you man because that's the most important thing. What do YOU want to do, how do YOU want to work, to get the results that YOU want to hear? Nobody can tell you what's right or wrong, which is exactly why I never said in this video that you couldn't achieve any of these sounds using plugins, or you weren't allowed to use cheaper hardware or clones. I'm simply demonstraighting a new product which despite it not resonating with you, is clearly of interest to lots of other people in our industry! Don't worry, you didn't upset me 😅 good chat x
