SSL Fusion Violet EQ

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In which I look at the Fusion Violet EQ from SSL. Does it cramp at Nyquist, as a viewer thought? (No it doesn't.) Is it worth loading a dedicated shelf EQ plugin, rather than just a normal EQ?

    I own a hardware SSL Fusion. It’s absolutely incredible and invaluable for mixing in terms of my hybrid workflow. However, I can’t for the life of me figure out why SSL didn’t take the time to model the entire unit in one plugin/GUI. The way I use it in real life is incredibly intuitive because of how quickly I can experiment/twist knobs/play with gain staging/audition my bus compressor, etc. it doesn’t make any sense

    I 'generally' go off the theory that _"You only need 5 plugins to mix well"._ Of course, these would be the five staples in every single mix, ignoring all the unique flavour plugins that account for creating outstanding mixes, not just 'good' ones. My general approach is to keep my 7-8 staple plugins and only invest in additional plugins that have a unique sound I can't get anywhere else. Different types of distortion, delay algorithms, special effects (flangey/phasey/chorusey, doublers, wideners, binaural/psychoacoustic, etc.) and REVERBS especially. Can't have enough reverbs!

    What I like about the Fusion EQ: it's a clean, easily repeatable shelving EQ with a little cutoff bump and top end gloss, very usable in my 2-bus chain. Are there other EQ's that could do that? Sure! But the simplicity of it to me is a plus. If I need more than a little EQ on the 2-bus, I'm going back into the seperate channels and busses. This takes away some options, ads some clean trimming which is always good in the 2-bus chain, and for 30 bucks, it's not a bad deal, IMHO.

    There is something in the works. Short version: the linear analysis is (probably) just grabbing a series of impulse responses, then FFTing to get frequency and phase response. And we all know that IRs can't do distortion, right? Reverbs are ok, the EQ response of a guitar speaker cab is doable, but it's always clean and linear.

    The main issue with the Fusion plugin series by SSL: they took the Fusion hardware device and made a dozen of separate plugins out of it, each plugin just emulating one aspect of the hardware. • @esahm373

    @@sleepCircle The Fusion itself has a saturation drive control that generates non-linearities. It works in conjunction with the EQ stage. Could you get an approximation of well known synth filter using volcano? Or compare Serums filters to another synth? I know this channels is predominantly focussed on mixing related topics, but that idea crossed my mind, I'd love to see a comparison between my virus TI and software alternatives perhaps (though that would require borrowing the hardware and the time investment to get your head around using it - so that particular combination might not be practical off the bat) Anyways, love your channel! I use Nova for dynamic control and finally "analog" or "character" EQs for saturated sounds and those wonky shapes which I could emulate in a stock EQ but which are faster and easier to attain when they're baked in. Pretty sure Dan might be an Apple user, so might not be so aware of how users use multi-touch touchscreen with VSTs, I'm not sure? Still, you can't be as accurate as mapping a modulator +/- if your DAW supports it.

    @@DanWorrall I think it depends if the DAW is designed from the ground up to be used that way really. I generally work with touch and controllers in Bitwig, but some VSTs don't support it very well. Surface Dial + Elephant is another nice way to get free of the mouse too.

    oversampling isn’t the only way to reduce aliasing in nonlinearities. there’s also antiderivative antialiasing, which basically restructures the math to reduce aliasing, and can be done alongside oversampling for even more. the downside is depending on what you’re doing, you may need to consider the entire system and not individual subsets, which can make the math harder to get the antiderivative of the order you want. it’s not a magic bullet but it’s pretty good at reducing aliasing for the additional cpu cycles it adds, as long as you don’t run into the issue i mentioned where you need to adaa the entire thing together.

    Use them as you would use any other compressor. Feedback can give a compressor more 'musical' program dependency, but many other factors also influence the sound. SSL bus compressors and 1176s both use feedback detection, but sound very different.

    Man I wish I had seen this video when it came out. I got sucked in by their marketing and got the entire suite for a yearly subscription. Tried twice to produce something with it, both times I ended up completely redoing the mix with my usual tools (one time on my own music, one time because a client actually got mad and was like "your old stuff sounds better"). Only then did it start dawning on me that I really hated the workflow (like the makeup gain thing, which appears in virtually all plugins of the series) and that especially the saturation boxes made all my mixes sound fuzzy and hairy in the high mids.

    I thought they also did compression or multiband compression at the same time for the violet eq? The fusion unit is a finisher to enhance the mix and people that look for smooth top end would indeed benefit from that. How ever i and again flabbergasted by the fact how easy it is to sell a ''front'' or UI and call it whever they like and people get crazy over some UI haha. I had a good laugh Dan, priceless.

    The usecase for analog eq style is just heavy lifting the lowend to midrange by boosting and attenuation at same time. My favourite ones to get such results are dangerous music bax, ozone 9 analog eq, tdr slick eq and bettermaker eq232d.

    You cannot boost and attenuate the same band with this eq

  • @soundcore183

    @soundcore183

    @@Rhuggins Yes indeed the only advantage it has over fabfilter eq is the magikal setting of the high shelf, it just saves some additional clicks. Deal it in, done. That's a workflow plus. Any visual aid provided, when it sounds good just keep it there. Sadly oversampling seems fake, it is just a high cut and not exactly the oversampling to get due saturation. A niquist threshold test should make that visible (some higher tones which reflect as artifacts when saturation is applied when oversampling is off at lower sample rate) however a high cut is necessary as definition for oversampling. I don't care if the filter is slightly nonlinear, phase shifts in higher register nor do i for saturation, when it sounds good.

    @@levondarratt787 nope you can attenuate the stereo signal (difference) in m/s mode or the mids (sum) but also boost and cut at same time with the mastering grade eq. Maybe will make a video later on. The boost and cut trick seems to be not widely known. The fat button on the violet eq does that in similar way by raising the Q and cutting the lows at same time. However that analog pulteq style curve is not the same. You can also boost only without clipping with analog style eq to get close to a smile curve because the slopes are gentle between 3dB to 6dB DYOR
