I really appreciate the time Derek takes to credit the original teams of old games like this. It's cool to know at least something about old dev teams, cause alot of these people seemingly drop off the face of the planet, the Castlevania director being a good example, and that was a blockbuster game!
"Limitation breeds creativity". Well said, man. That's what makes me love the amount of imagination that these older games called upon with the aesthetics, gameplay, and music. Love your reviews, brotha.

Exactly. Main reason I love the Game Boy library.
This has got to be one of the only reviewers that I can feel the genuine love of video games.

He probably referred to him as "nerd" because he used to call himself the Happy Video Game Nerd.
4:00 Good lord this game has the cutest item animations I've ever seen. Rolan's Curse 2 is another really good GB game I've never seen anyone mention.
Look it is when Konami gave a damn!

Konami never gave a damn they just had exelent devs
Been a fan of HVG for a long long time and I still sometimes re-watch your videos because it is just nice and light to watch. Loving the huge quality change. Please keep it up. You have gone a long way man.
Awesome production and information that you put out! I definitely like the change of style and keep up the good work!
I read about the game in Retro Gamer Magazine and downloaded it today out of curiosity. I can't read a word of Japanese and I can't believe how addicted I am to this game right now! Figuring out what the menus mean and what the game's rules are felt like a great part of the experience, and yes, I also deleted my profile after naming my character with letters that looked like they spelled "POOP", like the adult I am.
I'm with some others when i say that a review of ANY Shin Megami Tenesi game would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

Didn't expect to see you here.
Lovin' the fact you release videos quicker now.
Wow! The past two episodes have been great Derek (and team?)! This is the sort of content I love.
It's good to see more vids from you, keep it up
I have always liked your videos, but the last few have been getting better and better. I love the new production and keep up the amazing work.
This is definitely one of my favorite reviews of yours because I had absolutely no idea this game existed. By the way, in case anyone is interested to know, Pokemon SUPER Mystery Dungeon is fucking fantastic! And damn, it has a great story and a ridiculous atmosphere for something with the Pokemon name attached. Though a lot of this comes closer to the later half of the game. If you're one of the people who couldn't quite get into it at first, I highly recommend playing until you get to the big plot twist.

that's what most of the MD Pokemon games are like.
I've remembered this video since you first posted and always thought Cave Noire looked like a really fun time. Over the years I always kept it in my back pocket (metaphorically) as something that might be fun to try, but seven years after the fact I'm finally sitting down to give it a shot and it's just a delightful little portable rogue lite :) I'm pecking away at the levels in my spare time and it's just a good time :) I truly don't know how I'd have known about this title without you finding and speaking up about it, so thanks to you good ol' uncle Derek :)
Great review as always Derek :) I love your videos because you always like to give a lot obscure games credit and you make me reconsider older games I may have looked over before, seeing you review this made me go and buy a copy online :) Thanks very much from the U.K! love your work!
Picked up a copy of this today, pretty excited to try it out!
You have my favorite reviews on youtube!
Love your reviews man, you seem like you really love the hobby!
What an amazing review!
really like what you're doing here...honestly though i miss the days of the HVGN but im still loving it keep up the good work
Cool review, man! What a great find!...
I love the review like always, Derek! I always wonder why retro reviewers tend to forget about the loads of hidden gems that the original GameBoy has to offer, I think you should review more GB games.
I'm so Happy you made a Video about this Game, Nerd!
2:15 six years after this video dropped, and I am now the Gameboy guy in public with my kitted out GBC
Great video. I want to give you props for going over the development staff and cover artist - I really like it when reviews mention the actual individuals who make the games instead of just the publisher.
Videos like this are why you are my favorite youtube videogame reviewer. By far.
This game i will have to look into, great review Derek. :D
I like that you actually picked out some of the people that worked on the game and showed their future works as well. It's cool to see the contrast from then and later.
It's always a treat to see you highlight the more-obscure gems, Derek, and I have to give you props for shedding a bit of insight on how the developers of these games fit into the larger, interconnected web of the industry. I always find it fascinating to see certain names migrating to unlikely projects; if you thought the example you gave here with Tiny Toon Adventures 2 was odd, did you know that Taro Kudo, the man responsible for composing the soundtracks for Axelay and Super Castlevania IV, would go on to write and co-direct Paper Mario Sticker Star? Also, and please forgive my nerdiness, but are those Chris Furniss' Zero Suit Samus doodles I spy on your t-shirt?
Great review! This is one that I had never heard of either and definitely sounds like one I'd like to check out sometime. Thanks for opening my eyes to it. ;)
It's becoming rarer and rarer for me to discover new games via reviews, so good job on finding this one. Definitely looks worth a shot, even though I'm not a huge fan of the turn based movement and combat in games like this. I guess when it comes to Roguelites, I'm more in the Isaac crowd myself.
Awesome video man.
Keep bringing it on man! More vids
Great review as always man!! This game looks boss.
We love you, Derek!
I know what I'll be playing tonight, great video!
I love that reviews are getting cranked out so fast. I kinda wish the background had something besides just a plain wall, though. However, that's my only nitpick with the new string of reviews. Keep up the great work!

Smashing review.
OH GOD THANK YOU!!! Its amazing to see someone uploading a video about something new then the same old tripe/bad game of the month/Retro circle jerk of the same old retro game reviewed a thousand times. Thanks, BIG D!
Hey Derek, would you have a longer version of that intro song we could listen to? Because it sounds really cool and I would love to listen to more than just 5 seconds of it!
@StopSkeletonsFromFighting

Freak80MC it's a really short melody, looped twice it's only 12 seconds long so there's not much more to hear. i know it's kinda shitty to bring this up but i posted the full version and 2 other demo songs on my patreon a few weeks back.

its great to see a new game video from you, interesting game im going to have give it a try
Never heard of this. Thanks.
all of this direct eye contact with Derek is making me blush
Cool vid Derek!
Just bought a loose copy in Japan! Thanks for your review, it sold me on it!
I have that same clear "play it loud" game boy. Still works like a charm after all these years.
yay more videos
Oh my god, I have to play this now!!!
I also love how the algorithm is recommending me old SSFF videos
yep it's 2022, seven years later and roguelikes/lites are still very well :)
excellent...yet again!
Great channel!
Just watched the latest UDUG and realized that I had missed this video and this game. Both situations have been rectified
It's not my type of game, but watching this makes me want to get out my old GB and play some of those amazing games. Why does Cave Noire remind me of NES Hydlide?

Chick enbolt Same here. I love portable gaming.
Also available on the Game Boy... Color is Azure Dreams. Also a Rogue-like or light or lite.
Great to see a gem I'd never heard of before. Are you open to doing more import games in the future or was this a one-off?
looked cool and interesting.
Have really been enjoying the new direction of your channel as the "Stop Skeletons From Fighting" guy. If you don't mind me asking, is there a video where you explain where the name came from? I've been subscribed for a while, but think I either missed that video or may have simply forgotten.
Not really my kind of game, but your reviews make my day no matter what.
Great video as always Derek! Love the little after credits bit. Also, OG Game Boy? Gotta get a GB Pocket when you're gaming on the go.
That music! :D
It's nice seeing Derek back doing his thing and while the HVGN was awesome, i'll take Derek reviewing games any day of the week.
Whoa, the 60 fps looks surreal! Nice!
inspirations to the mystery dungeon series.
That moment when the first game shown in the video is Heavy Bullets ^ω^ I love that game. It's so scary at times!
Pixel dungeon is a smartphone game in the turn based style. It's worth a look if you like these types of games.
I feel bad because i really wasn't into portable games till high school. then really played the 3ds for around 2.5 years and really stopped playing it all together, really playing it when a new zelda game was released. I blame my laziness, but really living in rural south dakota you have to drive everywhere in order to get what you need/want. being at home you got other stuff to do. so playing a 3ds or any portable game is easily done. just not in my best practice. but watching Derek's videos makes me want to play more portable games especially the DS era, (which was in full swing when i was in middle school). Thanks Derek.
You should totally do more portable reviews. I absolutely love your writing and the careful mix of humor and smart analysis in your videos and I would love it if you talked about Cubic Ninja or the GBA first-person shooters, the latter I think has the most material to work with. I'm not sure if it was for the slightly enhanced graphics or something, but developers had a strange obsession with trying to fit first-person shooters like Doom and Wolfenstien on the GBA. I've never played them but I've heard they aren't very good. What do you think?
This has gotta be the first time since grade school that "I'll see you on the bus" doesn't sound like a threat.
Neat game. Thanks for talking about it.
Mystery dungeon...? I love that series
ooh those eyes
This is good. Pls make more...
Hey Derek, any idea when the next Stop Skeletons podcast will be?
I love your reviews. Havent watched your channel since happy video game nerd. WHy did you change it?
if you want a good roguelite/roguelike on smartphones, might I recommend pixel dungeon and hoplite? hoplite is particularly an interesting twist on the genre.

I have few games on my phone but those are definitely two of them. Well, 2+ since there's so many spin offs of Pixel Dungeon. Only other one I dabbed with was Shattered Pixel Dungeon.

Pixel Dungeon is pretty good.
Really entertaining and challenging game in several aspects, I was surprised to see a game of this type in the Gameboy, it took me a while to finish it, but it was satisfactory, it also has a good soundtrack .
After seeing this I want a homebrew Brogue port for the Gameboy, very hard! ;) Great Video!
You'll see me on the bus? Is that some kind of threat? I'll see YOU on the bus buddy!!
I think of 1979's Adventure for the Atari 2600 as the first console rogue-lite. It doesn't have a random map, but it has a mode where items and enemies are placed in random locations throughout the map, including closed-off areas unlocked by keys which are also in random locations, and permadeath is very much a feature of the game, so it's no different in practice.
I was wondering if there are any web sites i can get a physical copy of this game? I really like and and I cant seem to find one.

I gotta admit I miss the old Starship Amazing HVGN intro theme. That was what hooked me to Starship Amazing! New intro is awesome as well, but it doesn't have that fun feel the old song had. Thanks for turning me onto an awesome classic that I've never heard of! I'm definitely going to pick up a copy soon.
And now Chun Soft is Spike ChunSoft, the people behind the Danganronpa series and Zero Escape series.

Chunsoft also made the first 5 Dragon Quest games
Hey Derek, What are the games that you showed in this video introduction.
Like I said on your patreon, this game gives me real deja vu's of other rpgs that base character progression more on equipped items than Exp. Levels, like Hero Quest and Dragon Strike, or the Browser Game Card Hunter. I think theres a definitive draw to these kinda games, because, as you said it, you need to play smart. Sure, leveling up in Card Hunter gives you more HP and magic icons you need to equip High Level gear, but in the end, its up to you to equip your char with the right combo of equipment that gives you enough defensive and offensive cards to play with, and if those cards fit with what enemies or win requirements you will face.
what was that game before the binding of isaac in the intro
I would really enjoy watching past twitch broadcasts on youtube... Watch ALL the Stop Skeleton Live!
I got my Game Boy ready... I will be waiting on the bus son!
Cave Noire, the name of an ancient fate
I know this is an old video (I actually enjoy going backwards in your video uploads) but at 7:26 I believe 3 of those 4 covers are illustrated by Tom Dubois
This has nothing to do with the video but I wanted to ask: What happened with you and your friends on Alaska? Why did you leave them behind? They even deleted a lot of the Space Money Octagon old streams with you on it.. why do that? did you ask them to take them down? You seem like a nice guy but im sad to see how you left them behind (if I recall you used to say you would call in on their streams from your new place) anyways.. wish you luck on your personal projects but I think it is sad to see how all this turned out. Im not trying to be rude or something but its something that has been bothering me ever since you started your Patreon. If you dont want to talk about it I guess its something personal between you and your friends.. but I wanted to at least give it a try and ask.
