    Hey it’s me Derek! Seriously, thanks for watching! I know I’ve been gone for a little bit and I wanted to come back BIG but the Zeebo was too big for just one video! Stay powerful! | Go to buyraycon.com/ssff for 15% off your order! Brought to you by Raycon. Edit: because of a copyright claim for Armageddon Squadron, I had to remove the music at 41:10. KZread has a new thing to remove music but keep the voice over, so the quality of the narration drops but it’s better than the whole segment being muted. Plus I don’t have to give most or all the ad revenue to someone else over 45 non-consecutive seconds of a 48 minute video.

    I had the chance to own a Zeebo and there are two games in particular that really stuck with me and that I can't wait to see in the next part of the video. Zeebo F.C Super League: As much as it is a football game, it is a very fun game (especially for those who like Mario Strikers), the story mode is funny, the gameplay is really good and there was an excellent co-op, I remember of playing for several hours with my brother and it was really cool to be able to use the Zeeboids, an interesting fact is that this is one of the 3 Zeebo games that uses the console's achievement system and that keeps the progression with your Zeeboid (you could gain experience with your Zeeboid and use it in other games, unfortunately only 3 games on the console used this system ), I remember that I got to be among the top 50 in the online ranking of my region, I had an excellent good time with this game . A Game of Eggs/Um jogo de Ovos: It's a game based on the Mexican movie "A Movie of Eggs", as silly as it sounds it's actually a pretty good 2D platformer and even had a really fun cool multiplayer, I dreamed of seeing this game being re-released on WiiWare, it would have been perfect, but unfortunately it never happened. An honorable mention also goes to Zenonia, it's an excellent RPG and the Zeebo version was the only one that had a Portuguese translation, this game is (or was) available on the DSi Shop on the Nintendo DSi, eShop on the Nintendo 3DS and on the Playstation Store on the PSP, PSVita and PS3 too, I recommend giving it a go, it's a great game.

    Just a small correction at 30:46, it is not that the PC has the full game (although it has). What the comment meant was that the RE4 PC version SOLD by Fullgames was cheaper. Fullgames was a monthly magazine in Brazil that always had a CD/DVD game with it, sold for like R$ 18,00 (something like US$ 4 or US$ 5). The magazine edition with Resident Evil was also released in 2009.

    The Jiangshi (Chinese hopping Vampire) have blue skin. As do a lot on Asian monsters. The blue enemies on the flip phone version were likely a way to make it clear that players were killing undead/supernatural monsters rather than people. Which would make the game more acceptable to play in public. It may even have something to do with censorship laws, especially if they wanted to release it in China.

    Oh man, that comment about fullgames, unlocked some core memories to me. here in brazil, back in the time, we had a magazine called "fullgames" that came with a CD with, not surprisingly, a fullgame, usually old and/or lesser kown games, but i bought the issue with RE4, and probrally have the CD/DVD laying around somewhere. That a bit of brazilian gaming history

  • @Devouhan

    @Devouhan

    Yeah, and at the time Zeebo released, Fullgames had one issue that came with the first PC port of RE4 (the buggy, Ubisoft one), that cost something like R$15,00 IIRC (around US$5,00 at the time, and US$3,00 now). So, basically, it was a much better deal to buy the magazine and get the game for PC than buy a Zeebo and get a bad port of RE4.

    I was a developer at Tectoy Digital from mid-2008 until its end in 2011 and witnessed the whole Zeebo weirdness from inside, really strange (but cool) days. As bizarre as it may seem now, much of those decisions made sense at the time (even when things got really weird, what we'll hopefully see in part 2). Others, to this day, still make me wonder what they were thinking (and by "they" I mean mostly Qualcomm and whoever approved that Ridge Racer port). IIRC, from the point this video ends (late 2009) until the beginning of the end (late 2010) the quantity and quality of games increased significantly. So did the weirdness factor, as focus shifted from mostly sports / racing to educational games. There were some last-minute China-only educational games that I'm not sure they were even released (but that's some great material for the next video if they were).

    Audio quailty drops from 40:09 to 40:36. It drops again at 41:10 and is completely mute between 14:22. The audio quality remains reduced until roughly. 41:36. I guess the Zeebo was just too powerful for the copyright bots. This system was apparently going to get a port of Sonic Adventure. It was canceled unfortunately, so we never got to experience Big's fishing on the Zeebo, and we never got to hear the Zeebo open its heart. We also never got another version to make fun of and call the actual worse version since it would've topped the already terrible PC version of the Xbox version of the Gamecube version of Sonic Adventure (we fix it using mods).

    I was 24 years old in 2009 when this thing came out in Mexico which is where I’ve lived all my life, I’ve been playing videogames since I can remember, and the first time I heard about the Zeebo was until Uncle Derek started talking about wanting to make a video about it. I cannot understate how much of a non-entity this console was over here. I don’t know a single person who knew this shit ever existed. We had a Saturday morning tv show about Nintendo that broadcasted on a national over-the-air network that lasted 5 years throughout the 90s. We had an official Nintendo magazine for Mexico that lasted 30 years. We had Nintendos at home (and Xbox and PlayStation). Zeebo was for no one. PS: amazing video as always, Derek and Co.!

    Piracy was definitely a HUGE thing at the time, but we also were a decent market for regular full price games. On the cheap side, we had NES clones, PS1 clones, those 1000 games things, I even had one that used plastic discs with (I imagine) microscopic groves. I don't know for whom this was for.

    Tip: "Rolimã" is pronounced similar to holy mann, it is the name of a "cart" made of wood using bearings as wheels, "rolimã" in Portuguese is one of the synonyms for "bearing". These wooden carts are like a skateboard that you sit on, but the front axle is only held by a frame in the middle, so you place your feet close to the ends of this front axle, and use it to control the direction, while the car runs downhill.

It was actually a way to tumble through the tax system and sell games paying magazine taxes. They were a mainstream trend in the early 2000s, after the demo-filled CD gifts in PC magazines of the late 90s. I remember there being at least 2 "full game magazines" at the time, Fullgames and Big Max. I still have my copy of Alone in the Dark 2 from Big Max hahaha

    Thanks for the new episode! My day always gets brighter when I see a SSFF video light up on my subscription feed. Recently I had my own kinda SSFF experience when I got an Oculus Quest 2. One of the first things I wanted to do with it wasn't even to play VR-only games. It was to experience Final Fantasy 14 with VR. Which is an unofficial/unsupported fan mod. It was a bit of a challenge to get it working, but the payoff was worth it. Let me tell you; if you've been playing an MMO for this long, it's a whole new world when you experience it at ground level from character POV. Especially in 14 where there's some downright GORGEOUS locales. I just wish I didn't get motion sick after about 10-15 minutes of it. Regardless, when I got it working I thought to myself "Uncle Derek would be proud" :P

    I think I might have figured out why the ganados in RE4 Mobile/Zeebo are blue. In Japanese, the words "blue" & "Brew", when spoken in their English forms, should both use the same exact katakana "ブルー/Buruu". Therefore, it's entirely possible that Capcom made the enemies in RE4 Mobile/Zeebo blue simply because the dev staff likely thought it'd make for a funny visual pun that only works in Japanese!

That's why I said that it's "possible" that the decision to go with blue was an inside joke from the dev team. Green "zombies" aren't exactly unheard of in games, but the decision to go with blue is too out of left field to be just a random choice.
