Ssangyong Korando in the snow, drift session

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Somewhere in the far west of Romania
SsangYong Korando Style+
1.5 tGDI, AT AWD
Tires: 235/55/r18 Dunlop Sport AllSeason
At the time of filming there was about 10 cm of fresh snow on relatively dry ground. Ambient temperature +3 degrees.
AWD and AT - enabled, ESP - disabled.
After the session, going out on the asphalt, I noticed a rhythmic knocking in all the wheels, but the phenomenon disappeared immediately after I washed the car. From this I conclude that it was due to the accumulation of dirt and snow.
The next day I repeated the session, at the same temperature but on a slightly softer ground and about 20 cm of snow.
After about two minutes the "4WD Check" came on and I no longer had four wheel drive. Everything was back to normal after two or three minutes. I conclude that the system has overheated due to the higher snowpack and softer terrain.
When returning to the asphalt I again noticed "rhythmic vibrations" in the wheels, they disappeared after washing the car.

Korando is meant for soft offroad. What you did it was a trial (I hope the owner of that land didn’t catch you) and it’s not a surprise that 4x4 has been disabled. If you use the car on roads covered in snow / slippery the 4x4 is doing the job. Tyres are more important in both situation. I know you have tried the car in offroad and you know her limitations well.

That's right, I tested the car off-road much harder than what you see here and it behaved very well, I think it can be even better, but I don't use off-road tires (AT or MT) and then I have a lot of grip limitations. An recent off-road trial I invite you to watch it... kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJiMuNqPc7XTlqQ.html The differential got hot and disengaged because it acts much more intensively when drifting than on a longitudinal route as in off-road, in addition the terrain was soft and the snow was about 20 cm. Yes, I escaped, the owner of that land didn't catch me :))

What do you think is this car's weakest link?

In my version I think the weakest point is the integral transmission, in certain (very difficult) situations it overheats quite quickly and deactivates. As a general wish, I would have liked a bit more ground clearance

This is my 2 points theory : 1. Very weak interaxle clutch with maximum output torque capacity only 800 Nm (source : Korando service / repair manual and Hyundai - Transys Powertrains product catalog) 2. Rear axle is probably lightweight Hyundai Transys IRS axle, or Ssangyong's own copy. By Korando workshop and repair manual has rear diff ring gear pitch diameter 145 mm, hypoid offset 25 mm and gear ratio 2.533, what is very similar to H-T's R056HS with max. output torque 1000 Nm. Maximum clutch output torque 800 Nm is very low for car with gross weight around 2 tons and not enough to transfer engine torque on low gears to the road. Interaxle clutch will slip and reach high temperature very fast, result is disengaged 4x4. Simply - poor design with clear evidence of massive cost cutting.

@@garminbreak I'm not good at the technical side of cars, I'm a political journalist :) , but I use this Korando for heavier off-road trips. Its main asset is not high technology, but reliability and low maintenance costs. It is a superior car to the Dacia Duster in terms of equipment and cheaper to operate, even if it has a slightly higher consumption. I have a colleague who uses a Duster and both he and I have caused minor damage to a front wheel fairing this winter. The repair at Korando was 110 euros, at Duster 225 euros!

Korando has simplest possible rear axle clutch with tendency to overheat after even small load and this is the result. Duster is much better offroader.

Dacia duster is not an offroad vehicle, it has nothing specific to be called an offroad vehicle. It also applies to korando, only that korando is not advertised by a lot of people as being for off road.

@@ionutmarc3506 OK, Duster is not offroader, but has much much better drivetrain for offroad drive with significantly lower cost. Same examples are Vitara, S-Cross, Tucson etc etc. 2 minutes of snow fun and overheated clutch ? Insane garbage, piece of the crap.

@@garminbreak Both models have problems with overheating, the duster is nothing more special. They are not designed for offroad, at most a muddy, snowy country road. I am Romanian and I personally own a Korando, this choice says a lot about how much I appreciate the Dacia brand. Attention, I am not a hater of the Dacia brand.
