Sri Swami Satchidananda and Ram Dass (1976)

In this enlightening interview, Bill Boggs speaks with Swami Satchidananda and Ram Dass in 1976 in New York City. They discuss a range of topics from many paths to our goal, happiness, suffering, enlightenment, prison Yoga, and more.
Ram Dass was a contemporary of Yogaville’s Founder, Sri Swami Satchidananda. Shortly after our beloved Teacher arrived in the United States in 1966, Ram Dass-whose name then was Doctor Richard Alpert-was on his way to India to find his own guru. Less than three years later, Ram Dass published his first book, BE HERE NOW.

    Ram Dass must have loved hanging out with Swami Satchidananda. Ram Dass loved his own guru, Neem Keroli Baba so dearly and unconditionally, until his guru left in 1973. Swami Satchidananda’s guru, Swami Sivananda, and Neem Keroli Baba were contemporaries, living close by. Swami Sivananda used to love to gather all the saints, sages, mystics, gurus together in his ashram, and discuss and eat fruits. Although Neem Keroli Baba was quite a rascal, and Swami Sivananda came from practicing being a doctor, they all recognized the underlying unity. The area of northern India, the foothills of the Himalayas is the home of so many great sadhus, saints and sages.

    Although I grew up a few kilometers away from Swami Sachidananda Ashram in Mysore, I had never taken the time to learn about his teachings. While searching for the Woodstock festival, I learned that he inaugurated the famous 1969 event! This curiosity got me to this video! Found his and Swami Ram Dass' teachings very insightful. Apparently, Ramaswamy (Swami Sachidananda) was a student of my dad (Krishnaswamy) when he was in elementary school!

    I grieve for those better days as well. I guess all the old axioms are true..."You can never go home again" All the wisdom in the world will never facilitate a new earth, Christ consciousness, oneness etc.... Its impossible without the expressed intent of the "whole" and sadly the "whole" has been quite literally bewitched into a dark and nihilistic expression of rampant consumerism fueled by a rather wicked breed of abject status seeking. We could never hope to achieve a significant shift without that majority because the human animal doesn't learn, it becomes.

  • @nexstory

    @nexstory

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@elizabethecarlisle1045 In the 60s, I spent many wondrous weekends sitting under the tall oak tree at Ananda Ashram in upstate New York, with my brothers and sisters in Integral Yoga, listening with rapt attention to each and every one of Swami Satchidananda's enlightening words. This was truly a magical period, pregnant with so many possibilities for the future, all bundled into one seemingly eternal moment in time. The group meditations were deep and often followed by spontaneous joy and laughter, with incredible musical offerings by our many talented musicians as they sang their original songs from the heart. It was there that Gurudev would reveal to us the secret path to enlightenment that didn't require any yoga practice at all. "Just be in the company of good people" he would say, "and you are already more than halfway there." For a time, we were completely shielded from the building storms of greed, war, socioeconomic discontent, and creeping environmental degradation forming outside the door. For that brief period in time, we really thought that through yoga practice, we could transform the world. To some extent, these Masters continue to have a palpable influence on the sanctity of life as we search for sustainable solutions on our fragile planet Earth. Mishio Kushi said way back then that, " Many teachers may come, but they cannot chew your food for you." The organic center that we cultivated, it appears, could not hold, as the constant influence of materiality invading almost every aspect of our lives. It appears that as a global community, we are hypnotically dancing to the dissonant sounds of Kali while imagining that a Covid injection, stimulus package, or technological breakthrough will somehow make the dark clouds of every conceivable vice and addiction disappear. In these moments of uncertainty, I hold as my anchor the song that Master Sivananda would sing to his disciples, and that Swami Satchidananda, in turn, would sing to us as we sat together at Ananda Ashram under the tall oak tree, "In all conditions, I am knowledge, bliss absolute." Thanks for rekindling fond memories. Be safe and be well.

    Consciousness is the soul, the spark of life from the divine, It is limitless, It contains within it the subtle bodies, including the spirit which is the mind. All souls are the same neither good or evil, but the mind on the other hand is programmed to function in its own unique way. We are constructed by thought, Gods imagination, thought energy. The core of consciousness and mind is, conscious light molecules vibrating at a very high pace, within it, interlinked, sacred geometric patterns making up the mind. One cannot exist without the other, as soon as a thought form, forms, they are interlinked. Everything has consciousness and a mind, even a phone, in the sense that molecules are aware of each other, and are processing binary information.

    Religions are direction. Direction provides focus and progression... which is essential to human well-being and fulfillment. Limits are sometimes needed . There has to be a true definition of truth not everything and anything can be true. Being correct of one thing automatically renders many other things false. There has to be a definite truth about God and the universe and religion is one's search to realise and accept the truth.

    I would love it if Boggs would ask either teachers, "how do you define happiness?" Because I can guarantee you that their definition of it is completely different from the definition of the vast majority of humans.

    Probably they would define it the same... happiness is complete ease and freedom from suffering. Vast majority of humans don’t experience that but they understand it as a concept and most have had moments of this.

    Swami Satchidananda would often say to us that happiness is our true nature and that it is not something to be attained, but rather something not to be disturbed.

    There are many Swamis who deliver at the UN. Unfortunately not every listener or group of listeners have come to this realisation and can continue applying this throughout society and culture. Until then we have only one being to be responsible for (not selfish but utterly selfless), change the self through revolution. One method might be to begin with following the Bhagavad Gita. It will transform the very essence by shaking the foundation of ego. Hari Aum 🙏 Aum Shanti
