Baba Ram Dass -1976, Aspen CO - Some of the oldest known video footage of Baba Ram Dass

Here is the oldest (1974) video we know of: • Ram Dass - Here and No...
With the recent passing of Baba Ram Dass (aka Dr. Richard Albert), we are excited to honor his memory with this lecture we just found in our vast video archive. Like so many in our generation, we were deeply inspired by his book BE HERE NOW and the stories of meditating in India with his guru, Maharaj-ji.
We first heard Ram Dass speak in Woodstock, NY where we lived at the time. Then in 1976, we videotaped this lecture while working with Grassroots TV, the Aspen public access television group. Ram Dass is also the reason we started our music label, Soundings of the Planet, in 1979. More on that story later. For now, let’s remember this amazing human, Baba Ram Dass. His wit and wisdom lives on in our hearts. We hope you enjoy watching and please comment on your experience with him and his prolific life's work. May we carry his spiritual legacy in our hearts. Thank you for sharing this video far and wide.

At age 17 I had cancer. During that time I was fortunate to have a disciple of Baba Ram Das come to me and teach of his wisdom and enlightenment. I forget his Hindi name but his given name at birth was Jerry Killber. I am forever grateful for his teaching.

For example, the school of Buddhism that the Dalai Lama is head of, even he has had to be reincarnated many many times while with my practice, my Master partially opened my third eye in a matter of weeks. Most yogis can teach only one pupil while my Master has 100 million disciples, that shows what His level is, the highest. It delights me that in many (most?) of Ram Dass satsangs there is a baby. Most of them will be in their 40s now and I wonder if the parents told them about the time they brought them as infants/toddlers to see him. I avoided him when he came to Berkeley where I was an undergrad - I tired of hippies and despised new age movements but it was my loss. Had I known then what I know now - how much easier my life would have been. Shaking off that regret is the last hurdle.

I have known about Ram Dass since the 70's and have read his books and listened to his talks, but this one is kind of special, in that along with his humor, it is raw. And, I really get what a tough journey he was on. I know that we all have a tough journey, but he was a pioneer in the way that he brought it to a culture at that time steeped in very hardened concepts and fear of what religion, God, spirituality meant.

It is possible to live in this modern era, freed from out-dated Philosophy and Psychiatry, challenging every Spiritual and Metaphysical tenet and surpassing any of the Altered States of Consciousness. Discarding all of the beliefs which have held humankind in thralldom for eons, the way has now been discovered which cuts through the ‘Tried and True’ and enables anybody to be, for the very first time, a fully free and autonomous individual, living in utter peace and tranquillity, beholden to no-one. Actual freedom is a tried and tested way of being happy and harmless in the world as it actually is ... stripped of the veneer of normal reality or Greater Reality which is super-imposed by the psychological and/or psychic entity within the body. This entity is that feeling of identity which inhibits any freedom and sabotages every well-meant endeavour. Thus far one has had only two choices: being normal or being spiritual. Now there is a third alternative ... and it supersedes any humanistic philosophical worldview and/or any mystical Altered State Of Consciousness. Visit actualfreedom.com.au

At around 19:00 Ram Dass says anyone should leave whenever they’ve had enough - you know when you’ve had enough - it just keeps coming, there is no “in conclusion” here, it’s just a constant flow…. This is so perfect. I always subconsciously come to these seeking that point, that aha. But that’s not what it’s about. It’s a stream and each person takes what they need. No pressure on the speaker to meet the needs of the viewer. Beautiful and true.

I remember in '72 I was living in London and I had this book "be here And now" and there was this big meeting with Maharaji, it was a good night but the Grateful dead had more influence than those 2 and to this day I am still and for the rest of my life a Deadhead Bless everyone

Thank you. I learned a few things about myself here. I had a mystical experience while I was going to AA meetings because of my forgiving this woman in AA whom I thought was not so nice. The Buddhists would call it nirvana, the christians would call it being washed in the blood and there was a few other things that came with it but I didn't know what it was at the time all I knew that it was just "sobriety" because that's the only reference I had for it but I knew it was way more than that. I'm currently studying A Course In Miracles because everything is all gone now and I'm like Ram Dass was, "a crooked egocentric" that wishes no harm to people. I have found a little forgiveness and mercy for myself as the result of watching and listening to this video. Thank you. 🙏🙏
