SRAM "Transmission" | Explained & Reviewed
Спорт
SRAM's Eagle AXS drivetrains debuted wireless shifting in 2019. And for 2023, the new SRAM Eagle AXS Transmissions take things two steps further by removing the derailleur hanger and adjustment screws! Plus, it's designed to shift better the harder you pedal, which is just plain crazy.
In this video, Mike and Tor explain tons of new tech with SRAM's new T-Type components, show you a quick install guide, compare them to original Eagle AXS drivetrains, and then review them.

My favorite feature is the packaging. AXS component boxes fill up the bin really fast, and we can't recycle them where I live.

Got the XOon my new Pivot Firebird and yes it’s a game changer especially on the climbs and having the option of 2-3 or full walk when holding the Botton up or down shifting is cool 😎 also 👍 Going to hard going back to my other bikes and having to remember to shift before sharp pinches 😮
Great summary of a cool product! Nice work guys!
Great review guys! I upgraded to Shimano Di2 R9200 wireless on my road bike about two years ago. The transition to XX was a no-brainer. Love wireless shifting.

I’m just waiting for them to release a rainbow version of this cassette haha or other fun colors like on the “regular” eagle stuff. It’s only a matter of time! With that being said, just ordered a transmission set from you guys for a new Nomad build and stoked to try it out! Even though I’m a little sad the raw aluminum color scheme won’t match my build quite as well 😋
If you smash the derialleur its gonna affect to the chainstay frame axle because of dicert connection and same are take the damage because without RD hanger...your bike will be trash after the damage..rd hanger is safer for derailleur and frame if you accidentally crash and rd hanger can take the damage but easy to replace...

Sick technology and a great video. Thanks, Mike. Proud of your success!
hooray for the frame bender 5000
Sounds great, the only issue I can see is if the derailleur gets caught on something your frame is going to take all of that force which could crack the carbon, damage linkage, linkage bearings etc. Very slick though.
They remind me of that back tattoo scene in "Dude, where's my car" .
0:00 Who's talking, you or he? 😆
with the shifting being dictated by software to match the chain with the narrow wide teeth on the cassette will there ever be a cable version? I like the new mechanical innovation but I don't think I'll ever put a battery needing component on my bike. I don't want to have an afternoon free to ride and find that I can't go because I forgot to charge my shifter battery. I want the reliability of cables.
I like the continuous chain/cassette engagement and the hardened tool steel X-dome of the XX T-Type. What I don't like is the higher pricing in Canada even when allowing for the currency exchange.
Can we use the existing AXS controller if we have the original axs system saving 150-200 bucks?
I like the no hanger but I don't like the absence of back compatibility with prior Eagle drivetrains. However within a year I'll likely have it and the latest Rockshok Pike Suspension.
At 16:44 it looks like the chrome AXS logo plate on the controller pod is missing. I suppose it's held in place by weak glue and the plate fell off during test rides?
The real question is: does the AXS battery charger finally have USB-C?
@TheLostCo
Жыл бұрын
It's the same charger and battery as before! So still micro USB like before! -Tor
According to several product listings X0 should have the Magic Wheel as well. It's nice of course, but rarely a stick or something else gets caught inside that wheel and Magic Wheel imo has no effect on a stick getting caught between chain and wheel.
Time to weld up a new rear UDH compatible rear end for my mountain bike.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Shimano zee rear derailleur is the first one to do "full mount"
Hell yeah Red Demon!!!
Can I still use my thru axle with a handle to easily remove/put-back-on the rear wheel, or do I now need a wrench to remove/put-back-on the rear wheel? And if I need a wrench to remove/put-back-on the rear wheel, must it be a torque wrench?
@PeakTorque did a video laying out some of the serious drawbacks to this system.

I've gotten Sram XO1 on all my new bikes since 2011, they have always shifted under load, lighter, easy enough to adjust, simpler is better for me, I'll keep my XO1 stuff on my sub 22 pound Epic EVO, weight is something that matters when your climbing up hill after hill in your late 70's, you can have all the Green Tricknology.. Happy Trails ;) !!!
What’s the comparison on xx1 vs the XO? Do you notice the lightness with the lighter one?
Any update on the coating of that xo cassette? Looks like the new xx has done away with that, but the coating my xo1 cassette wore off on the first few rides. Wondering if the same would happen on this new stuff!

And then there is the new cassette driver that’s need or new hub and if you don’t run SRAM already. Tack that onto the $2000. And possibly the new rear triangle etc etc. Is it really cost effective ❓
I kinda just want that sticker pack now.
I love how it's not compatible with... basically anything. Real smart. 😆
All this innovative tech and I'm still stuck with a wired system 😂 only thing I'm kinda worried is how parts are *probably required to use new tools to remove meaning I will need another proprietary tool to remove something. I'm just guessing I'm not sure but I hope that's not the case.
It's the next big thing. Go buy it!
More information on how this technology works with E bikes, would be greatly appreciated. Most rear wheel hub drives can’t take a 12 speed cassette. Are there going to be transmissions compatible with bikes that take less than 12 speed?

E-bikes are the reason this was developed. To better handle motor torque. Is shifting under load really that bike of a problem on mountain bikes?

Hey Lawrence! Sram is pretty committed to their XD driver so if you can find a rear drive hub with the XD driver on it then you're in luck! But I wouldn't expect any transmissions with less than 12 speeds to be coming out any time soon! -Tor

Does saiguan make a cheapcopy ????
Does this mean that the whole force will go into the carbon frame? Because earlier, you had hanger due to not to bend, destroy rear mech and/or frame - what about now? Will it just pass the force directly to the frame, I guess?
@SEZ66
Жыл бұрын
Looking at how it is designed, it looks like the force will be shared between the frame, hub, and axle which is exactly what happens when you get an impact to your wheel.
@blueskiestrevor5200
Жыл бұрын
Yeah in this video they claim the reason for hangers was to protect the derailleur but really it was to make sure your bike wasn't a write off every time you crashed. To me hangers are even more important on fragile carbon frames that love to crack. I suspect sram figures anyone who can afford this drivetrain can afford a new frame whenever it breaks. I would be worried about this becoming the standard in the future
@jonhardy7131
Жыл бұрын
The force goes to the axle. It’s integral to the structure of the bike. Keeps everything safer.
Now just waiting for a UDH adapter to fit this on my beloved Banshee!
Is it possible bike companies will start releasing chain stays with udh mounts for current model bikes that are not udh?
@Magic_crew
Жыл бұрын
I see this as very unlikely since most company’s would like to sell you a bike. Re tooling a old frame mold or jig would be expensive and most likely not profitable for them
Hahaha! I know now that I will go sooo muuuuuch faster going up hill with this derailleur 😂😂😂😂 By the way, stop going to the bars and don’t drink amigo!
When something is going to give, what do you choose? Frame or hanger since there is no derailleur anymore… And yes given enough force something is going to give…
Eagle xx1 12 shifts better when you dump the xx1 chain and replace with a YBN
impossible in non udh frame or maybe with some adapter ?
@TheLostCo
Жыл бұрын
The T-Type stuff will NOT work on any frame that is not UDH, because the frame itself MUST be the exact spec and tolerances as the UDH design for the derailleur to mount on it. -Mike

Whats the chance sram makes a oilslick chain and cassette for this new gen?
@TheLostCo
9 ай бұрын
We'll be first in line if they do! -Tor 😎
Ebike groupsets need to be re-engineered for longevity over weight IMO. I can destroy a 12 speed SRAM cassette and chain with about 30% of the distance covered on a standard bike. I've actually swapped to the Shimano SLX 10-45 cassette as it's always the 50T that snaps teeth. Hoping smaller 45T won't have as much chain stress with the smaller diameter.
The system seems impressive, for the price it should be, although the weakest point in the system will always break first. Before the weakest point was the derailleur hanger that cost change to replace. Now to me it seems like the weakest point of the system would be the pulleys cage, I wonder if the cost of the cage is lower/same/higher than the trusty hanger... Probably higher...it's the how to pull money from a product that's already been sold...time will tell✌
Amazing system. Too bad only the chain and controller are the only components backwards compatible with existing AXS. Owners of bike frames without UDH can only salivate. The alloy cranks look fire!
