Squid Game's TERRIBLE English Dub
Ойын-сауық
The wildly popular Squid Game was originally made in Korean, but due to it's popularity it received an English dub as well and BOY is it terrible... In this video I talk about why the Squid Game Dub has become a meme and take a look at some "Squid Game Dub be like" TikToks.

I think that the lip syncing was actually the least of the voice over’s problems. The sync itself was actually quite good most of the time! Of course that sacrificed pacing and natural dialogue though…then there’s the matter of the actors’ performances…
So I've seen the 6th episode of Squid Game approximately 3-4 times in both the English dub and the South Korean original with subtitles and I can safely say the original is much greater in this scenario. Il-nam frequently comments about his marbles in the English dub even when the marbles are not the focal point of the conversation, however in the Korean original Il-nam does this but it feels more genuine to the plot, because it conclusively aligns with Gi-Hun's plan to trick Il-nam out of all of his marbles. Il-nam's ultimate lesson prevails in the Korean original due to the pure emotion put behind it, however in the English dub he basically tells Gi-hun to fuck himself and he dies with no marbles. So inconclusively episode six is basically the same sub or dom. I mean dub.

The voice acting is so bad. The voices seem chosen nearly at random, with little care to the identity of the character in the show. It’s almost like the producers (or whoever casts for dubs) didn’t expect the show to be so popular in English speaking countries. Or, and probably more likely, they didn’t expect a dub to be so popular.

@hardlo7146
2 жыл бұрын
@@biohita For one, there is no such thing as a neutral Spanish. Every single Spanish speaking person both native and as a second language has an accent picked up as they learned the language. Often what is referred as neutral Spanish when speaking of dubs is the Central Mexican version of Spanish without Mexican slang (so it's marketable to countries other than Mexico who are not familiar with our slang), as that is the most prolific area of Spanish dubbing in the world ( due to Mexico being the most populous Spanish speaking country and thus having a bigger market). In Spanish, at least in Mexico, we often differentiate between the Spanish of Latin America and the Hispanosphere and that of Spain as "español" y "castellano" respectively. So no, not everyone speaks Castillian.
@hardlo7146

@@biohita Also to call Latin American Spanish neutral would be outright maddening, as that would imply it is the norm, as opposed to Peninsular Spanish, which is where it originated lol. Neither is neutral, as both are variants of the same tongue.

I gotta say the german dub is surprisingly well done. The voice actors actually portrayed the emotions in a realistic way. It definitely isn't perfect and gi-hun's voice is a little bit off too imo, but I really enjoyed it actually. Especially sang-woo's voice suited him very well

Yeah I don’t think I said it very well in the video but I definitely think this is a lot of people’s first time being exposed to dubbed media. Making fun of the lip syncing rather than the poor performances shows they have no clue how dubbing works lmao
That's why when I watch a movie with subtitle, I hire somebody to read the subtitle for me with matching emotion so that I can immerse myself in the visuals. hehe
I don't speak french, but watching in french and reading in english seems to be the closest out of the dubs. After watching some scenes in english I had to try the others
02:50 just FYI since you said you don't watch dubbed content, that's not an inherent problem in dubbing and I believe it's actually more of an American dubbing problem. Every dubbed movie that I've seen in languages other than English, the voice actor's tone and energy will match the scene, and the dubbing directors and the script translators will even make an effort to make the lip movement sync with the spoken language when possible.
I never knew the English subtitles were bad because I always used English [CC]. The only difference is that the [CC] has captions for sounds, like gunshots and things like that

They didn't think Squid game would be that popular😭
I'm disappointed that this wasn't a completion of the dub from the show. It was videos people making fun of the dub from the show.
On set preforming is drastically different than voicing in a mic, as well as this being a foreign show after all. I highly doubt dubbing any kind of show is easy to translate one to one to another language. That's why I mostly excuse English dubbing with a lot of LOTE shows.
watching a show with someone elses audio is an insult to the actors and the work of art itself. it is not how it was intended, if you are capable of reading written text, then use subtitles. its like going to a concert to listen to some great music and lead singer is swapped to some half assed drunk who cant utter coherent sentence without shitting his pants. then saying damn that band sucks i just dont understand it
