I critiqued this show for unoriginality because of its games and compared it to series that had more unique and creative games like Kaiji and Liar Game. If you're not careful with the games, then you could easily run into the infamous horror trope of characters dying stupidly when they could have easily survived. Still, I largely agree with your comments regarding originality. South Park even made an episode about that regarding how The Simpsons have already done everything.

I feel like Squid Game kind of overcame this problem because most games were made specifically to reduce the number of players in each round. Like, the only game where people died because they lost their shit was really the first one, which is realistic because if suddenly you are playing a traffic lights and suddenly someone gets shot, there would be a mass panic which causes a chain reaction, because they tackle into others and general chaos sets to in which just leads to more and more casualties due to the way the sensors operate. The cookie game is just genuinly hard and people have to play it under time pressure and stress, especially since shots begin to be fired all the time and both the tug of war and the marbles game are basically just games of elimination where half the players have to die. With the glass ceiling games, its just like that, its based on pure luck and eliminating as many players as possible, with trying to outsmart the game not being intended. Also I think the creator didn't even attempt to make the whole death game premise look like something unique and new, we know from interviews that the series was inspired from his own experience with living with debth and economically struggling and that he spend a lot of time in manga cafes during that stage of his life, where he would read death game mangas. Stories like that are usually made unique through the kind of games they play, the characters and the overall themes about society and humanity the series tries to get across, where I would say, Squid Game is rather unique. Its about korean childrens games which I haven't seen yet, all the characters are lower class adults instead of highschool aged teens and the themes are specifically centered around a criticism of korean capitalism and debth. There are even some bits about ageism and sexism in the way the games are designed, as they tend to favor young men over women and the elderly, which is where the tension from the tug of war game comes from, as Gi-huns team disadvantaged themselves by having women and an elderly man in it.

Played 1 and 2 and loved them, the 3rd was weird af. The messy storyline and the fact they dont tell the story from beginning to end its confusing and makes my monke brain go brrr

The fact that it had like ZERO rape scene kinda made it so vanilla. I remeber reading a few similar surival-action-game mangas and they also shown how when humanity goes bad, rape is not far away.
