It's called call and response, and Zeppelin were masters at it.

They were and it wasn't just guitar and vocals. John Bonham also interchanged with Jimmy Page during his solos.

Zep does a lot of "call and response" between the vocals and lead guitar.

I saw Page live at the Rochester, New York War Memorial in Rochester, New York, when he was the sole rhythm and lead guitarist with the Yardbirds right before he formed the New Yardbirds, soon to become Led Zeppelin. At one point, he pulled out a bow and got some of the weirdest sounds out of his electric guitar. I was witnessing the sounds of the future with Led Zeppelin! Amazing!

Page used to record and overlay a couple of different guitar tracks on some songs.

This came out in 1969 btw. The speeding up section is called a Rave-Up. The line "Killing Floor" taken from an old Howlin' Wolf song. You caught the call and response between Robert and Jimmy. JPJ is just masterful on this one too.

Greatest 4 musicians ever brought together. Page and John Paul Jones are probably the best at layering different sounds in the studio, Jimmy Page is an absolute brilliant Master at overdubbing.

Jimmy makes the guitar talk!! And Robert uses his voice like an instrument. That's why the call and response they do is sooo good. They have a conversation and it's just sublime

I think you are the only one to have made the comment about the guitar questioning/commenting on what Plant says. There's also some 'call and response' between Plant's singing and Page's guitar after that. I love the bass rhythms and variations in this song including speed changes. I love that you had to check what year we are in now.

This is such a dirty bluesy song. You shook me is a must my friend. Peace out. Hear Jimmy on the guitar pure genius. Peace out ✌️ ☮️ And that bass from JPJ and Bonzo going nuts on the drums crazy talent. Peace out ✌️ ☮️

As you listen to their catalogue you will find Led Zeppelin, unlike many bands, is definitely 4 great musicians making up the whole. Each member can be heard in all of their songs and each contributes equally to the final product. That's why when john Bonham died in 1980 they couldn't go on, that magic was not replaceable.

This has always been one of my favorites primarily because of just how much it highlights the mastery of JPJ on Bass. He has always been so underrated only because of who he played with, although he was so important to their sound. Put him in any other band of the '70s and the entire world would know his name.

This is the meaning of poetry, musically but just as important verbally. Heavy censorship during this time and STILL they couldn't stop this song "he's just talking about squeezing a lemon" who had the dirty mind. Such an important song of the day.

When I was listening to this song one day when I was 14, my mother came into my room just when the 'squeeze my lemon' bit was on. That's disgusting, she said. Someone of your age shouldn't be listening to this. Another time she came in when I was listening to Zep and she very proudly said 'oh, is this Janis Joplin?' :) That was 50 years ago and it still makes me smile...as do Led Zep.

This was so heavily influenced by the blues master "Howlin' Wolf" that Zeppelin eventually gave him songwriting credit, and I imagine his estate still gets some cash for his role. Great reaction!
