Squarebody suburban 6.2 diesel valve cover leaks and how to prime the fuel system

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I show the old burb some love repairing fuel and oil leaks. In this video I show the teardown to reseal the valve covers, replace fuel hoses and fuel filter, and reprime the fuel system.

    Thank you. I got the job of maintaining our fire trucks and have never had a diesel in my life. Have a fuel leak and hoses still have 86 on them.

    6.2's are a good candidate to learn how to work on diesels. They are dirt simple. Most running issues stem from fuel system issues such as leaky fuel lines, as you are finding out. Should have some new videos I the spring working on my burb.

    Man, I really like the video’s that you have made for your suburban like this. I have a 1989 Silverado with the 6.2 that I am getting ready to go through this same process to get it back on the road and this has helped tremendously in sourcing the parts I will need to do it right the first time and not get frustrated with it.

    My injector pump worked prior to my engine teardown. I replaced all the tank hoses the sending unit and fuel pump. Im at the point of the priming process, after cracking the lines I noticed there to only be a rew lines showing signs of air bubble however 3 injector lines are still dry i guess im gonna be cranking a long time i plan on pulling the glow plugs to make it easier on the starter

    Thanks very helpful. My M1009 gradually coming along. Removed n Replaced fuel tank,sending unit,fuel filter. It's been running fine on Jerry can(bottle feeding) in cab. Now that I finally popped my head part way out my butt and figured out battery configuration. I have been trying to get it to pull from main tank. Also took suggestion from another KZreadr and removed ballest resistor deal,replaced glow plug and under dash starter relays to elimate possible issues. I almost had a melt down. Still have original relays and a new Delco Remy starter relay if I decide to go back to the original style. It really has been a challenge. I'm relatively new to the whole military diesel scene. But being a Veteran realize the Military go about stuff in an odd manner. Going back in for more "Fun"(Torture) soon.

    Normally, when we want to bleed out the air in the fuel lines and the filter(s), we think of using pressure. That makes sense, right? And, one day, I hope to install an electric fuel pump on my 6.2L, for filter changes, etc. That-a-ways, you don't have to dead your batteries and wear out your starter just trying to force the air out of the fuel system. But my dang mechanic friend, Don and I were working on my van a while back, and we got ready to bleed the air out of the system, and right there, in front of God and everybody, he took one of those $5, plastic hand pumps that you can get from Harbor Freight, the plunger type, and connected it to the line coming out of the fuel bleed valve...the little T-handle valve that sets right up there by the thermostat housing...that rubber line that just dumps out when you are bleeding the system, and that dang Don, connected the plunger pump to that line and pumped that system out with suction! Pissed me off that I hatn thought of doin' it thatta way myself. No grinding the starter, not jumping the battry, no nuthin'. Just a few pumps (suction side) on that plunger pump, and your there. Don't forget to open the little valve and don't forget to close the little valve when you done. Don't ya hate it when somebody takes something that is all like "involved" and turns it into some quick and simple thing, and it wasn't you that thought of it?1? Don't push the air out- suck it out. Oh, ah- if you want to get where your're going with that- don't forget to have the key on too. Really helps. Patrick Cowdrey, Eagle Point, Oregon

    I Love & Appreciate the way you explain things in the video. I have close to 5 Years of Restoration on my 1982 Red block 6.2 So A LOT of time working on it but very little if any "Run" time. I got my 1982 K10 as a Gasser swap drove it for a summer or two then started the process "Back to diesel" yeah well that was 2017 & i'm JUST Finally getting to the truck. I did use my Old lines that came with the eng i got So yeah i'd better replace all the rubber lines. Oh & I used the Fel-pro gaskets with metal lining inside. Otherwise cork is nice. What do you prefer for Belts? I'm trying to stay U.S.A Made on this NOS restoration but that's not a possible item to find NOS for a 6.2L. The ONLY thing I had about the 6.2s is the way GM/Detroit Designed them like really Lines over Valve covers? Couldn't come up with a better design... I have before untightened the Lines at the Injectors & at the back of the Pump just sightly to where I can move & swivel them "up" and around the valve covers to remove them.

    I don't think the runaway is very likely with these engines. Typically those occur due to oil leaking into the intake through the turbo charger oiler, and both of us have the N/A model of this engine. I suppose the injection pump could get stuck, but you should be able to turn the key off and cut fuel delivery.

  • @Lordofjunk

    @Lordofjunk

    3 жыл бұрын

    you are correct its not likely. however I have had this engine itself run away when the pump went bad. The shutoff jammed internally. I have worked on diesels for many years, and have seen many runaways for various reasons. At this point, I like to be cautious.

    @@Lordofjunk Fair enough. I guess diesels will be diesels. 😄 When the engine ran away on you, was the throttle locked high as well, or was it simply stuck at idle?

  • @Lordofjunk

    when this one ran away, it hit the top. I don't know how many rpms it was turning bit it sounded like all of them. I shut it down by throwing an old shirt in the intake and pinching fuel lines.

    you may still have air in the system. sometimes it's a pain to get all of it out.

    Would you know why my 6.2 at high rpm coasting down a mountain, longer I'm off the throttle, the longer it takes to get a throttle response. When power comes back from either waiting until rpm drops from loss of speed or throwing in neutral, power comes back hard and shocks drivetrain.

  • @Lordofjunk

    @Lordofjunk

    2 жыл бұрын

    sounds to me like the governor in the pump is kicking in. as it gets close to governered rpm, the throttle response is reduced.

    maybe not all the way to 35. I was just picturing coasting down the mountain and the rpms being close to governed rpms. maybe check to see if you fuel system is sucking air. that is the biggest problem with these fuel systems.

    i am working on a 6.2 for a friend. swapped a new motor into it. cannot get it to prime, i have bought a new set of group 27 batteries, and burnt up two starters. now with fully charged batteries and a BRAND NEW starter it still cranks slower than my grandma can walk.... what could be causing it to turn so slow? any ideas? thanks

  • @Lordofjunk

    I would start by checking connections made sure you have good clean power and grounds to your battery and starter. As far as priming goes, take the inlet line off the fuel filter. Turn the engine over and see if fuel comes out of the line. You may a bad fuel pump.

    I have heated up my starter a coupe times as well. It seems like the box filter only acts up when it's cold outside. I have zero problems in the summer. I think the seals on the back of the filter shrink in cold temps causing a leak. I'm gonna swap it out for a duramax housing. New video for that in the coming months.
