Given the awful direction Square Enix seems to be headed in, I'm glad these beloved IPs will no longer be under their control. Fingers crossed that Embracer will greenlight a Legacy of Kain project and do their newly acquired IPs justice. Hang on a minute. So Square Enix, in its infinite wisdom, sold off DOZENS of well established IPs and THREE functional game studios, all for a measly $300 million that they're going to invest in sodding NFTs? Lolwut. Considering that a) NFTs have been near universally rejected by the gaming public and b) Steam, the largest platform for PC games by a country mile, doesn't even *allow* NFT games to be sold on their platform, I feel like Square Enix may have just tied its own noose. Ah well, the dumpster fire will be interesting to watch at least.

Not necessarily, it doesn't have to be embraced by the community to make a ton of money, ever heard of "whales" about gambling/microtranction/lootbox ? A few percent of players make most of the money in this kind of scenario so you only need a few players addicted to NFT's to make it viable Also we know it's hated in the west but is this the same in Japan ? I mean they love their Pachinko's an Gatcha games over there so the reception to NFT might also be different

Yes, SquEnix sold 3 underperforming studios to invest their money in their JP studios (which have been doing much better), mobile games studios (more profit), and the Metaverse scam (I swear only investors are excited about Metaverse, can't defend that one). Overall this decision makes a lot more sense than trying to keep investing in studios that deliver subpar experiences and profits.

Man, Human Revolution was just short of being one of my favourite games, regenerating health killed it. With it stealth could only be incentivised by having one bullet of ammo on each enemies with less then ten bullets in a police armoury, the dev team went and made a massive billboard that tracks how much ammo each level has refused to look at the core mechanics. That, and the constant hacking minigame. The overuse of airducts and being a bit unwilling to challenge the player I can deal with but the hacking is omnipresent and ammo being too much at a premium for a "Terminator" build as a result killed the excitement too much. Apparently it was made by a studio that was new to the genre, they actually did pretty well for a bunch of newbies, it probably explains why they were too afraid to challenge the player.

A couple of things about the money side of things: I believe I noticed the $300M purchase was cash and debt free. Normally when a company is bought it comes with any debts the company has, so the net assets of the purchase is much lower than the amount the public hears about. So these studios are getting a fresh start that even new companies don't often get. Also, a cash purchase is rare. Usually payment includes things like stocks. Taking those two things into consideration, $300M is much higher than it sounds, though it's still much smaller than the $3B you mentioned ($3B US is $3000M US, for those who don't know).

Some practitioners of seppuku allowed themselves to die slowly, but they usually enlisted the help of a “kaishakunin,” or second, who would lop off their head with a katana as soon as they made their initial cut. The entire process was accompanied by great ceremony. Among other rituals, the doomed individual often drank sake and composed a short “death poem” before taking up the blade”

Yeah and they are smart. You do realize NFT’s goes FAR AND BEYOND these ape paintings, right? NFT technology is starting to be used in tokenizing real estate and are widely adopted by both the healthcare and legal sectors. It is a future 5 trillion dollar asset space. Healthcare seeing the most success thus far with NFTs giving the power and personal nature of medical records back to the patient by creating greater transparency and accessibility. NFT’s not only speeds up the treatment of patients, but patients also gain quick access of testing results and through the blockchain, it would be instant the moment the information is available. Even in the inevitable all digital future, NFT technology can save digital games and hence help preserve games a lot better than what they currently are by giving greater ownership back to consumers. This is why we are still early in this technology. Instead of being a naive f00l, do some research and you would soon come to realize that these types of technology really is the dotcom boom 2.0

Hot take: This is ultimately a good thing. Square reminded me a lot of Capcom in the early 10s, during their “push for the west”. Ultimately they are better off focusing on their strength, great Japanese games. For those “high profile IPs”, none of them moved the needle the past years. Neither the TR nor DE reboots been financially successful and IPs like Thief or Soul Reaver are relics from the past at this point.

That is what I've been saying since 5 years ago. Square Enix is spreading themselves too thin when they try to appease Western market through Western IP and some of them fail. Now it seems like SE these past 3 years try to give attention back to their Japanese IP.'s I hope by selling Western studios off, SE can finally give 100% focus on their main Japanese IP's It just sad that SE has to invest/mention on blockchain and ruin their reputation even more. The IPs and studios Square Enix Europe are selling are the ones that were once owned and developed internally by Eidos interactive and their studios (Including Crystal Dynamics (Acquired by Eidos in 1998)). The only western IPs they will keep are the ones that are developed by external developers (e.g. Life is Strange (Dontnod & Deck Nine), Outriders (People Can Fly), Just Cause (Avalanche Studios) and Sleeping Dogs (United Front Games). Here are my predictions on what will happen after the sale: Sometime after the sale is complete, Embracer Group will resurrect the Eidos Brand as a publishing label after years of dormancy after being absorbed by Square Enix Europe (Just like THQ Nordic) and Square Enix Montreal would be rebranded and reorganised as a sub-unit of Eidos Montreal as either Eidos Mobile Montreal or Eidos Montreal Mobile Studio.

It feels ppl only see FF or other RPGs if it comes to Square. I have a friend and he's some sort of a hardcore fan of those Games. So for him, Square is the best Company out there. And even if i show him all this bad things Square does, he think, that NFT is good(thinking of "take over Items to other Games") or other companies forced Square to do things (like the microtransactions in Chocobo Racing. Because it's exclusive on Switch, he think that Nintendo said, microtransactions should be in the Game...) I think you get the idea, how hard it is to talk to a Fan, if he ignore or "see it better" what bad things a Company do.

I have a feeling that Square Enix will be the next company to have a big loss following after Facebook, Activision and Ubisoft, and to be honest it's just sad to see them fall this far considering the fact that JRPG is one of my favorite genres and they literally made masterpieces like ff6 and FUCKING CHRONO TRIGGER (which is my favorite game of all time). Alot of publishers have the problem of having way too high expectations for a game (i.e. 'everything must start a new franchise that grows vastly forever') and as a result spend too much based on those expectations, and when the game inetivably do not meet their expectations, its viewed as 'underperforming' - no, you had the horse before the cart numb-nuts. Like when EA though they could turn deadspace into a multimedia empire rather than it being good niche horror series; there is no world where deadspace would be a mainstream empire, not everyone likes horror to being with, then add scifi, and so on - you have to correctly gauge audience size and put the resources relative to that, no just assume every game will be a massive hit.

Man, if Embracer can see that another Thief gets made that ISN'T hot garbage, I'm gonna be a happy man. I'll never forget (or forgive) how an Eidos spokesperson came on to the Looking Glass Studios friggin' forum and said "oh no, Thief 2014 will be everything Thief fans want and actually be GOOD! :D" Basically, lying right to our damned faces. Hell, you could just do a remaster of Thief Gold and Thief II (maybe include what we were gonna get w/ Thief II Gold) and that'd make good cash and get them a good rep. Man, I just want more actual Thief instead of growly wannabe Batman featuring his side acts: lameness and disappointment.

As long as Embracer stays true to their word and focus on single player titles this is a good thing. Nothing wrong with Multiplayer games in general, however not every IP should be shoved into that direction. Maybe there is even hope for a Marvel's Avengers single player title now.
