The sound of the knife scraping against the stone is oddly satisfying
M4 was the first steel I had unexpected success at freehand sharpening. 154cm, vanex and s45vn have risen to the top of my favs since using them. I use a guided system if I want to change the edge angle, but freehand with Dmt stones to maintain edges.

S45vn is my favorite as well.
Love the sage for a 5th pocket. Its great in m4. Way better build than natives. Can't wait to hear your insights on this beauty.
Hi. I was waiting on this sharpening vid. I have this exact same knife. Thank you
The shapton glass are my go-to water stones. I typically stick to diamond plates for anything higher than s30v in vanadium content…but for everything else, the glass stones are about the best that I’ve found. Fast cutting and incredibly refined…
Beautifully done Erica, that looks like an awesome edge!! I agree with you that I don’t need my edge completely perfect and polished, since I’ll be using it and dulling it again within the week. I just need an edge that works and is sharp enough to get the jobs done!!
If a toothy edge is what you want. I find that a soft Arkansas stone puts a wicked edge on s45vn and m390.
You have a nice sharpening technique
Awesome! I'm grabbing a brew and getting comfy.

It’s a long one- buckle up!
Great asmr video putting me to sleep 😴 💤
I’ve found that to happen with the JRE strops also, that sometimes just moving forward to leather after chasing the burr on stones, will actually take it off eventually.
Erica I use a KME sharpening system and I love to sharpen K390. I can either sharpen K390 to a polished edge or I can sharpen it to a 600 edge, either way works. Its super easy to sharpen. I'm sharpening my Spyderco Endella in K390 while I'm watching this video.. Today I'm sharpening it to 600grit then stroping.
Thanks this was really informative!
Great video I am happy you took the time.
28:45 is a great example of how paper is best used in sharpening: to locate residual burrs and rough spots.

Yes sir!
Nice work, Erica.
ZDP189 and K390 have yielded the sharpest, finest edges I’ve gotten freehand. I first used a Sharpal 320-1200 diamond plate, but lately I’ve gotten very fond of the Venev stones. I have three: 80-150, 240-400, and 800-1200. Great results.

Really huh? I find that ZDP eludes me. K390 is easy…I can get that stuff whittling hair in 15 minutes. But for whatever reason, I have a difficult time bringing ZDP to a really high level of sharpness. Fine edge is no problem but I’ve always liked that “here be dragons” level sharpness and ZDP gives a difficult time with that.
I've only been free hand sharpening for a few weeks so I'm still experimenting with different stones, I have the ultra sharp diamond plates and a shapton pro.
Only things better than good stones, are a knife that can be sharpened by them, and someone who knows how to use them both! 🫡 i’m happy to say you’re why I can freehand sharpen like I can today!
Trying to do my best with freehand. Using DMT plates.im still learning for sure. I have a lot of harder steel knives so diamond is a must
AWESOME VIDEO! KEEP IT UP!

Thanks for watching!
I've been into free hand sharpening for a while, I like using 600 grit diamonds then soft and black Arkansas stones.

How does it do switching from diamonds to soft Arkansas stones
I’ve been liking my Silicon carbide stones. I use my 400 then strop and it’s more than enough for my spyderco harder steels. Also, Ambidextrous is the way!! Harder at first on the non dominant hand but comes out so much better in the long run once you get good

@@ericasedc I start every knife with my non-dominant hand and it gets a tiny bit better with every session 😃 the first few session were horrible 😭
Do you prefer a choil? I usually just sharpen all the way back to the heel. Doesn't take long on a course or extra course. Thanks for the video!
Erica; what’s your favorite aspect of the knife world? You seem really indulging in different steels and sharpening.

Erika! Curious your thoughts between Spydercos XHP and cruwear. Which sharpens better? Thanks!
What kind of stone are you using
Great video!! What clip is on yours?
